I'll listen to it but I have a thing for Garland. She's the antiBoyle.

boyle is the antiboil.
I tried imagining Boyle saying the words "I went to lose a jolly hour on the trolley" and it just didn't work.

but please listen to the song on stereo....if possible.
it is really the epitome of a voice becoming a musical instrument.

I have NO IDEA what the great "American Songbook" is............. so I apologize in advance for straying out of bounds (but I will keep it "American" songs)
In No particular order.

"What a Wonderful World" (Preferably the Kieran Kane version)
"Green River" --- John Fogerty
"Georgia" or "Blue Skies" either performed by Willie Nelson
"Skeletons" ---- Rickie Lee Jones
"You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome, When You Go" ------ Bob Dylan (*today!, tomorrow it could easily be a different Dylan tune)
"Time The Conqueror"---- Jackson Browne

here's a question..to you, what makes a song great? lyrics? music? tempo? who sings it?
I write lyrics (but can't/don't write music, so naturally lyrics are very important to me

Tough question wylie. Are you speaking in a compositional framework, or just appeal?

I'll only say that a in a good song containing lyrics, the lyric (the "voice") and the melody should speak to, or with, each other.
But, in general, a good (or great) song is just a "tune" that has stood the test of time, and thus appeals to wide audiences with differing personal lifeways.
So someone listening to a tune (for the 1st time) living in the 50's would like it, but someone living in the 20's, or the 21st Century would also like it.
USUALLY, for that to occur, the melody need by simple but have a strong hook(s), so it sticks. becomes an ear worm easily.

Those are all LARGE generalities.

the great american songbook is musical nomenclature for the standards written basically from the 1920s through the 50s....does not encompass rock or rock and roll or country or folk.......etc.
MOST of which I don't care for. Too slick for my tastes. There are exceptions, like "Autumn Leaves" for example. Some Gershwin, does that count?

A good song is like porn----I know it when I hear it.

I don't agree that a good song has t appeal to a wide audience. I've heard too many great songs (in my opinion, of course) that do not appeal to a wide audience. I don't think the amount of people a song appeals to has anything to do with the quality of said song.

I completely agree with that. If I said otherwise I misspoke. I LOVE many songs few others have heard.

BUT, it does beg the question........... IS it a great song IF only the trees and rocks hear it?
Of course. But I didn't think that that kind of "great" is what you were after.
If so, then it's hard to beat the moaning of the morning wind down the canon.
