I would never have gotten Brady Anderson. I did know the Bonds question.

Now:

What future Hall of Famer was left off of the Protected Player List for the 1969 Expansion Draft?

Wilhelm, but Mantle was also left unprotected in '68...Vinny Castilla, Bobby Abreu and Trevor Hoffman were all plucked in expansion drafts.

So many amazing facts about Wilhelm. Here's a few I found:

--He was actually a year older than anyone knew when he played, so he was 29 the year he debuted and still pitched 21 seasons.
--The only season he pitched as a starter full time, he led the league in ERA.
--First reliever in the HOF
--Made only 52 starts but had a no-hitter and a 1-hitter.
--Once pitched 8 2/3 innings of no-hit relief in an 18-inning game
--Was released for final time 5 days before his 50th birthday, but everyone thought he was only turning 49 so no one paid much attention
--Had career record for appearances when he retired (since surpassed by a few guys)
--Only made one postseason appearance ('54 WS) because he was traded to the Braves in '69 too late in September to be eligible for the playoff roster
--Homered in first big-league at-bat and never again (!)

The Yankees left Mickey Mantle unprotected? They must have known he was retiring anyway, as he did not play in 1969.

Did not know about Wilhelm.

The answer I knew about is:

Jim Palmer !

Yes, JP was on the DL for 9 millionth time and the Orioles thought he would never really live up to his potential and left him available. The Pilots and Royals apparently thought that the Orioles must know their stuff, so no one drafted him.

Think of the possibilities ! The chapters of Ball Four that might have been written had Bouton interacted with the most neurotic player ever, even as Palmer's brilliant pitching lifted the Pilots into the division race...

My favorite bar bet that has won me many beers is "How many times did Ted Williams get 200 or more hits in a season?"

The answer is none. One of the greatest pure hitters of all time never did it - he walked too much.

this reminds me of one of my favorites "How many 50 HR seasons did Barry Bonds have?"

most of us may know the answer is just ONE because we've all had him on SIM teams, but that number is absolutely baffling to the casual fan

I also think it's a trickier question than asking the same about Gehrig, who much more famously never hit 50 but got stuck on 49 twice
The fact that Aaron got to 755 without hitting 50 once is also baffling.

To hit 755, you have to average 35 home runs a year for 20 years (!!) and then hit 30 and then 25 in your declining two years in a 22-season career. Awesome really.

How many hitters BEST seasons were when they hit around 35 seasons. Bill James in an essay about Carl Yastrzemski and Billy Williams says what they did in their best years is about what Henry Aaron did every year.

Willie Mays had to average 33 homers a year for 22 years to get to 660.

Nice facts about Hoyt Wilhelm, who ialong with Luis Tiant s the only person who was nearly as old when he was born as Satchel Paige was at birth !

No one seems stunned that Jim Palmer could have been drafted by the 1969 expansion teams. That's a division title in 1974 for the Yankees alone, with who knows how many other consequences.

Isn't everybody when they are born as old as anybody else was when they were born?

My pa had me memorize Mets players and numbers when I was like 3 or 4 years old, I couldn't pronounce Kranepool for some reason: called him Ed Krankpool
