2019 WIS Championship Topic

Welcome to the 16th Annual WIS Championship

The WIS Championship involves 96 owners, each playing in six leagues (with different themes). The top 24 owners advance to Round 2, where they play in another 6 leagues. That's over 58,000 games played over the course of six months.

In 2004, ballantine proved that he was the best WIS owner in the world as he averaged 103 wins in round 1 and 93 wins (against the best of the best) in round 2. All 12 of his teams made the playoffs and four of those won the World Series.

In 2005, ronthegenius became #1 player as he averaged 99 wins in round 1 and 93 wins in round 2. Nine of his 12 teams made the playoffs and four of those won the World Series.

In 2006, ArlenWilliam captured the title with a strong round 2 performance, averaging almost 94 wins per team (next best was < 90). He had 9 of 12 teams make the playoffs, including 5 of 6 in the round 2.

In 2007, JohnGPF outlasted 2004 champion ballantine with a dominating round 1 performace (94 wins per team) followed by a solid round 2 effort (88 wins). He saw 9 of his 12 teams make the playoffs.

In 2008, jfranco77 won the closest race (to date) by edging out bigmc by only eight points (898-890). His dominant first round (98 wins per team) gave him the big lead. Overall, he had 7 of 12 teams make the playoffs with two WS titles.

In 2009, wildthings1 won an average of 96 games in each round and he had 10 of 12 teams make the playoffs. His final margin of victory (943-888) was the largest since ballantine in 2004.

In 2010, rbow923 improved on his 5th place finish in 2009, by averaging a consistent 94 wins over rounds 1-2, getting 11 of 12 teams into the playoffs and winning 2 World Series titles. Previous champions wildthings1 (3rd), ballantine (7th) and jfranco77 (9th) all finished in the top 10.

In 2011, brianjw kept rbow923 from being the first 2-time champion, by winning in the closest race ever (992 to 989). Brian's strength was his consistency. He only won one World Series, but he averaged over 95 wins and saw all 12 teams make the playoffs. It's the third time in the 4 years that a first-time entrant has won the Championship.

In 2012, mildnhazy used a strong round 2 playoff performance to prevent brianjw from winning back to back tournaments. Overall, his 12 teams averaged over 93 wins, 9 made the playoffs (four winning over 100 games), and two won the World Series.

In 2013, brianjw became the first two-time champion (almost three in a row) with a dominating performance in both rounds. He averaged over 100 wins per team in round 1 and over 94 wins per team in round 2. His 11 playoff teams resulted in 3 World Series championships. The second place overall finisher was closer to 12th place than to 1st place.

In 2014, WaitNSee won it all in his first Championship appearance. Although his 12 teams averaged only 91 wins in the regular season, he had very strong playoffs results, making 5 World Series (out of 9 playoff teams), winning twice. He outscored discodemo by 37 points in the Round 2 playoffs to win the Championship by only 7 points (the third closest margin ever).

In 2015, WaitNSee became the second 2-time champ and the first to go back-to-back. His 12 teams averaged 93 wins in the regular season. His 9 playoff teams resulted in 3 World Series wins. He edged out brianjw by only 17 points.

In 2016, WaitNSee asserted his dominance by completing the first-ever three-peat. He set numerous records including margin of victory (162.5 points) and total points (1,067). His 3 World Series wins in Round 2 alone (after also winning 3 in Round 1) only further distanced him from the competition. He retired after winning.

In 2017, brianjw returned to the top with a balanced performance that saw him win 3 World Series with 10 playoff teams. He more than doubled his point lead during a brutal Round 2, making a strong statement on his way to a third title.

In 2018, ozomatli completed his ascent to the top by averaging 96 wins per team. He led wire to wire in both rounds and had 6 of his 11 playoff teams reach the World Series (3 won). His 1,015 total points were the third most in tournament history.

Here are the Top 24 Owners from the past 15 tournaments:

Who is the Best Sim Baseball Owner in WIS?

In order to be considered the best, you need to have success over a broad range of different themes at various salary caps. This tournament will absolutely determine who the best WIS owner is. The winner will have had to put together 12 solid teams over a 5-month time period. Serious WIS owners only. Here's how it works:

* The field is typically limited to 96 owners. In order to guarantee your spot in this Championship Event, you will need to purchase a $15 GC. See below for instructions on purchasing a GC.

* In Round 1, there will be 6 different themes we'll each be involved in. Assuming 96 owners, there will be four instances of each of the six themes. All twenty-four leagues (4 * 6 = 24) will be started at the same time. Points will be awarded based on wins and playoffs success. Points = Regular season wins + playoff wins + 10 points for winning the World Series. Note that this formula has been updated for 2019.

* The top 24 owners in cumulative points from Round 1 (regardless of which leagues they were in) will advance to round 2. In Round 2, there will be another 6 themes (different from the first six themes). The same points formula will be used in round 2. Round 1 results will not be completely ignored in the final score. The weighting will be 33% for Round 1 and 67% for Round 2.... In other words, the cumulative Round 1 score will be divided by 2 and added to the Round 2 score to determine the Best Owner in WIS.

* The leagues will not be determined randomly, but the divisions within each league will be. Once the 96 owners have purchased the $15 GC, then I will use a complex formula, originally developed by schwarze and updated by ozomatli, to rank every entrant and use this ranking for the league alignments for Round 1. This will essentially distribute the higher-ranking owners into different leagues.

* The formula to rank the owners will be based on your historical stats on WIS. If you participated in any of the previous WIS Championship(s), then how you fared in those will also come into play (more weight given to more recent performances). The more tournaments you play in, the more weight this factor will have in your overall rating. The final piece of the ranking formula is recency -- how you have done since your last appearance in the tournament, relative to other owners.

* In the event that one or more of the top 24 owners from Round 1 decide not to enter round 2, then the next best owners(s) from Round 1 will advance. In case of ties, the tie-breakers will be (1) regular season wins (2) playoff wins (3) best single team overall point total (4) second best single team overall point total, etc.

* As far as prizes, assuming 96 teams, we'll have $1440 in gift certificates plus admin will be adding $300. That's $1740 worth of GC to distribute. All teams advancing to Round 2 will be guaranteed at least $30 in GC. If more or less than 96 owners participate, the prizes will be adjusted accordingly (see below).

Prize Structure (based on 96 teams)

Place Prize Amt
1st $250
2nd $200
3rd $150
4th $120
5th $100
6th $90
7th $80
8th $70
9th $60
10th $50
11th $40
12th $40
13th-24th $30
25th-26th $10

The team with the best regular season record in each of the six Round 1 themes will each receive $15 (ties split).

The prize is nice but what we're all really after is the recognition as being the BEST.

* As far as the themes go, different cap levels will be used. There will be two lower cap (< 100M), two mid-cap (>= 100M & <= 120M) and two higher cap (> 120M) themes included. There will not be any drafts in Round 1. There will be at least one but not more than two drafts in Round 2.

If you are interested, please post here. I don't expect that we'll start playing any games for at least 6 weeks, as it will take a bit of time to fill the tournament, create rosters, verify rosters, etc.

** The themes for Round 1 can be found HERE

The roster deadlines will be posted below

Here are the deadlines for getting your Round 1 rosters in.

There are three deadlines. You must have at least two teams entered by the first deadline. You need to have at least four teams entered by the second deadline. At the final deadline, you need to have ALL SIX teams entered.

The penalty for being late is 1 point per team, per day late. The penalty points will be cancelled if you get all SIX teams in by the last deadline.

The first deadline is Sunday, July 14.
The second deadline is Sunday, July 28.
The final deadline is Sunday, August 4.

If you accumulate 10 penalty points, I will have no choice but to replace you. Owners who join with fewer than 2 weeks til the first deadline will be exempt from penalty points, but still will need to have all six teams in by the final deadline.
