Advanced metrics make Buckner look like a lesser player than he seemed to be when I watched him play. His OPS+ for his career is 100, meaning he was a dead-average replacement-level player statistically. All he did was hit and hit and hit, mostly singles and doubles, but in that era you always saw him in the top 10 in the league in batting. Never walked more than 40 times in a season, but never struck out more than 39.
This game skews your perception somewhat, because my eyes back then said Buckner was a guy you were happy to have in your lineup. Always gave you good at-bats.
