In a theme league, I am carrying an extra OFer and have 3 daily spots for these 4 players:

1941 Joe Medwick: OFer who slashes .318/.364/.517 with B/B- defense. Currently on the bench as the odd man out.
1941 Pete Reiser: OFer who slashes .343/.406/.558 with B/A+ defense. Currently CF.
1941 Billy Herman: 2B who slashes .291/.361/.379 with C/C+ defense. Currently 2B.
1941 Cookie Lavagetto: 3B who slashes .277/.388/.370 with C/C- defense. Currently 3B

What is the optimal configuration of these players? Assume that LF and RF are unable to be swapped out and Medwick can only play if Herman or Lavagetto move to the bench.

Does the sim actually recognize Reiser as throwing right handed? I think you can only tell by looking at him in your actual league. If they do then it's fine to play him in the infield.

That's 120-150 points of OPS you're losing by keeping Medwick on the bench. For two players who don't really light it up defensively. I'd be inclined to play Medwick at 3B for at least a while, see what his D looks like...

I put Reiser at 3B and Medwick in the OF.

So far Reiser has 4 errors and 1 - play in 7 games

I'd probably keep Medwick on the bench, with aggressive pinch hitting. But it can't hurt to try the other combinations for 15 or 20 games and see the results. Out of position at 3B shouldn't be as damaging because they make fewer plays than 2B and are one step closer in the defensive spectrum. What is the league Hr/9? If it's a typical deadball pitcher league I'd be more likely to keep the slashers. Also, how high of a A+ is Reiser? If he's A++ I'd be tempted to keep him in CF and float Medwick to 3rd if you decide to bench Cookie.

Reiser has a 2.97 Range Factor. Not A++ but solid A+.

I voted for Medwick at 3rd, Reiser in CF. Cookie can go, get that offense in. I’ve played Mannywood at 3rd base for a really short term in one of ozo’s leagues and I don’t remember him making errors, just a few minus plays.


edit: if you still can see “The Blacklist” league, let me know how I played Mannywood in Season 3 I believe. Whatever the last one I played.

So far, Reiser has made 14 errors and 3 - plays in 17 games at 3B. Not sure that will be sustainable. Might need to put Medwick back on the bench

Moving Reiser from CF is a big mistake because quite a bit of his value comes from his defense. Generally, 3B (other than 1B) is the best place to hide someone who is playing out of position, and Cookie Lavagetto is an empty OBP player with mediocre to poor defense.

Good point. Reiser and Medwick have the same Fielding rating (while Reiser's Range is significantly better). Either way, though, a 133 error pace is pretty bad

Dodger Manny Ramirez. The .396 AVG one.


i just realized my typo. But if you can see how his fielding was at 3rd base, lemme know how he did.

Take this for what it's worth, but in the Two Man Band league with all sorts of players manning 3B out of position, here are some stats through 107 games:

'95 Gwynn (A/D+ in OF) is the worst with 50 errors and 24 minus plays.
'34 Al Simmons (B+/C in OF) has 44 errors and 14 minus plays.
'95 Jesse Burkett (D/B+ in OF) has 40 errors and 16 minus plays.

Not great, but not near as bad as the pace Reiser is on for you.
Meanwhile, some unlikely guys are doing just fine with no rating at 3B.

'94 Frank Thomas (C+/D at 1B only) has just 10 errors and 8 minus plays.
'51 Gil Hodges (B/B+ at 1B only) has 14 errors and 8 minus plays

I switched Medwick to 3B. He's got 1 error and 2 - plays in 11 games so far
