Round 1 Sound Off Thread, 2019 Topic

A little off-topic. I have not paid too much attention to the 2019 MLB season or stats since I do not read a newspaper anymore, but I was looking over some of the 2019 WIS pitchers. They have some really impressive normalized# numbers until you get to one stat.

Take a look at this guy.

75 IP

.161 OAV#
.82 WHIP#
K/9# 7.45
BB9#2.36

All of it looks pretty good until you see this.

HR/9 # 1.28

It must have been a strike out or HR year. Too many players like that.

Yeah, 15 given up in 75 innings. Is what you get when guys guess hit, swinging from their heels. They run into one...

Hader actually struck out over 16 per 9 IP, but the normalization kills these modern strikeout pitchers. You'd do better with 1920s era Dazzy Vance, who in RL struck out fewer than a batter an inning but normalizes better.

He was actually even much better earlier in the season (in terms of K/9, OAV & WHIP)

I don’t have data on it, but I suspect he is the pitcher who produces the most three true outcomes. I know Juan Soto’s big single off him in the WC game was only the second single he allowed to a LH batter all season.

Great article on why he is dominating from FiveThirtyEight

Well after making the 2nd round 11 years in a row it looks like it's not in the cards this year. Seems like as good a reason as any to ride off into the sunset and leave this site behind. I had been looking for a reason to quit for a while due to the lack of care and updates to WIFS. Thanks to ozomatli for running the WISC the last couple years and particularly schwarze for his many years of great service to the site. Take care everyone - I may come back if the site ever gets revitalized.

Say it ain't so, MNH!

One of the toughest competitors the sight has ever seen, and a threat to win the WISC every year. I sometimes wonder what your stats would look like if you played in leagues other than the WISC. Hope to see you back in the future but, regardless, thanks for the great competition throughout the years

Agreed with all of this. Hope to see you back, and if not, thanks for all the tough games.

2 games left and I could still have anywhere from 2 to 5 playoff teams.

I’m in the same boat. Though the fifth would take a minor miracle.

My $120M team coughed up a shot at postseason. 4 teams are in. My $70M team is tied for WC spot going into #162...with a decent finish all 6 would have made it in with 90 or more wins. We're a bit short of that...

I have two teams one game out of a spot with one to play, so that’s not promising. I might have only 3 teams advance.

This has gone from crazy to just pain stupid. Three 100 win teams and one of them will not make the playoffs. BigScungil and I with a winner takes all finale.
Honus and Claude 103-58 0.640 - x 7-3 W1 55-26 48-32 0-0 jfranco77
$090M - Ed Walsh & Cy Seymour 100-61 0.621 3 - 5-5 L1 50-30 50-31 0-0 NebHusker

Given that people are fighting Big Scungil for a final cage birth, I think you have a lot of support in that matchup
