I didn't expect to do well, but a Mauch right off the bat? Four loses by one run, including a blown save. Geesh !

Is there a benchmark winning% for making the 2nd round? I know hitting a certain winning% won't guarantee you make the 2nd round, but is there a number that has been a general benchmark in the past? Just wondering.

Generally, having 550-560 points is the cutoff. It will probably be slightly lower this year since there are fewer playoff points available. If you end the regular season with under 500-510 wins, you need some serious playoff luck to make it.

I would argue that 510 regular season wins has a reasonable shot to make it to round 2 without serious playoff luck.

The average points per playoff team will be approximately 5.5 this year instead of 13.5 (in previous years). Since most owners who have a shot at round 2 will have at least 3 playoff teams, the cutoff for round 2 will be somewhere in the 525-535 range (about 25 points lower than last year).

510 wins + 17 playoff points (avg of 5.5 bonus x 3 teams) = 527 points..

OF COURSE I start out 0-6.

According to this my teams are in the 2nd, 14th, 27th, 37th, 49th, & 79th toughest divisions of the 144 in the tournament.

That's rather impressive. I'm just full of luck-- just not the good kind... 1 team of 6 is 'barely' in the easier half of the draw.

The team I'm 5th most confident in is in the 2nd toughest division in the tourney-- so that will probably not end well.

I think that's kind of how you would want it, all things considered... You only play a small premium of extra games against your division. If your team isn't that good anyway, being in a really good division is going to cost you a couple of wins, max. That's not the end of the world. What really hurts is when your best team gets tossed into an impossibly strong division. If you miss the playoffs with your best team, not because of the couple of extra losses but because 94 wins just wasn't enough in that division, that really burns you. Less this year than in the past, but still...

I always find it strange in the WISC how much time we spend talking about division strength and how little we spend talking about league strength. The difference between playing 14 games against someone and playing 12 is, in the long run, about 0. And sometimes a division means you get a fluky playoff spot, or miss a spot with 94 wins.

But these are much smaller effects than playing 12 games rather than 2 games against one of ozo's teams or one of discodemo's. In principle that draw, who gets into the AL and the NL, could have enormous effects, much bigger than the sorting within divisions.

All that said, I have just enough energy to write about this; I'm too lazy to do the league strength calculations.
