A few important notes regarding the list of available players below:
Players changed positions very often during this era, much more often than in the modern game. Including a few who were pitchers in some seasons and position players in others...Babe Ruth was definitely not the first player, or even the first famous player, to pull that off.
Also, we're covering five seasons of rich but turbulent baseball history here (1899-1903). In 1899 there were 12 teams (all NL), in 1900 there were only 8 after contraction, then in 1901-03 there were 16 with the expansion into the AL. So players jump around from position to position, and many players have 1 or more seasonal gaps in their career.
For the purposes of this list, I have followed the following convention. If a player was active in 1901, then he is listed under the position that was his primary position for 1901, even if that is not the position that he is most known for. (Frank Chance, for example, was primarily a catcher in 1899-1900, an outfielder in 1901, and a first baseman in 1902-03; he is listed as an outfielder below.)
If a player was not active in 1901, then I worked through seasons in the following order until I found one in which he was active: 1902, 1900, 1903, 1899. My reasons for doing this is that I wanted to list players at the position in which you are most likely to draw them when we do the randomization. So if a player is not where you expect him to be listed, keep looking, or use CTRL-F. It is possible that I made a mistake and left someone off, so if you really can't find a player, please sitemail me. Do not post missing players in this thread please.
