The VINTAGES Draft League:

All of this recent Simmons chatter reminded me of his “wine cellar” chapter from the book- leading me to this concept…

Premise: Build the best wine cellar (WIS basketball team) using $50m to draft single seasons of players (unique to your team) while going through the available seasons in the database every two rounds.

First and second rounds draft order: 1-24, 24-1. A single season cannot be repeated, and any player drafted is unique to the drafter’s team. Ex. If I choose 15-16 Steph Curry, no one in the first or second round can choose a player season from 15-16 and Steph cannot be drafted again this season. All players from 15-16 other than Steph are available in other years (14-15 or 16-17 Kawhi, but not 15-16), but their 15-16 season is blocked for this two round block.

Third and fourth rounds: Draft order 24-1, 1-24. All seasons open up again, no clones.
Fifth and sixth rounds: draft order 24-1, 1-24. All seasons open up again, no clones.
Seventh and eighth rounds: draft order 1-24, 24-1. All seasons open up again, no clones.

Last four slots go to any undrafted player under $2m.

Draft order to be determined by some online random number generator. Division determination still TBD.

This is correct- 48 of the 68 seasons in the sim will be selected in each two round block.

So if someone takes 15-16 Steph in the first two rounds, no Steph seasons can be drafted for the rest of the draft, or no 15-16 season can be drafted again?

two parts:
1. Steph can only be taken once
2. 15-16 would not "unlock" until the first two rounds are over, so you could see 15-16 come up in each two round block (and I suspect that we will)

Does that make sense?

Correct. Only that team will have Steph Curry.

Incorrect. One player can be drafted from the 15-16 season every two rounds.

I'm sorry mikee, but it's just too convoluted for a newly 54 year old dude like me to follow. Way too many things to take into consideration.

It reminds me of the TV show Survivor, when they do their "immunity challenge" and Jeff Probst says, "Ok, first you will run down the beach to a raft, then take the raft out to a buoy, paddle around the buoy and return to the beach. Then, you have to take a slingshot and hit THREE targets and when you hit all three, you have to then climb on the sand under these cargo nets, reaching an obstacle course. Once you get past that, then you have to use these coconuts to make FIVE baskets. Finally, after your 5th basket, you have to get in this burlap sack and hop 50 yards to the finish line, while picking up THREE life preservers on your way to the finish line."

And if I was ever on the show, at that point, I'd be the one going, "um, Jeff....what was the 2nd thing again????"
