Free birth control Topic

...is extremely obvious. Of course it's a good policy. Every single American should have access to free birth control and contraception.

Change my mind.

who pays for all that "free" birth control??? Not that I am against the idea, but nothing is free. Someone, somewhere pays for it. If the government pays for it then we are paying for it with our taxes. If the manufacturers donate it, then they raise their prices to make up for it, so we are paying for it. Nothing is free,

Yep, we pay for it through taxes. Fortunately, it's an extremely beneficial investment.

Say we have less access to birth control. This will mean more unplanned pregnancies. Children growing up in this situation are disproportionately likely to require welfare assistance, and to grow up to be unsuccessful. This is a cost on the state that outweighs the costs of birth control by a huge margin. Not to mention less need for abortions. Free birth control is a win-win-win. It's obvious.

Contraceptives are relatively inexpensive wylie. Much less so than missiles or some such.
And as Tangy points out hugely less expensive to society than unwanted children.

Personally, I think that contraceptives should definitely be slipped into Rand Paul's Labor Day family punch bowl.
And passed out freely in places like Oklahoma disguised as pork fritters or something................
Some folks we should really work hard to discourage from breeding.................

Any more of them Huckabees and it's gonna drive me to some serious drinking...............and blinking.............
Have you seen her?
Matter of fact there ought to be a National Law passed................. NO MORE Politicians from Arkansas is allowed to run for federal office.
Maybe Alabama too come to think of it................

While I do think birth control should be readily available to all, I also have to agree 100% with wylie (imagine that) in that despite what many Dems/Libs like to say, NOTHING in this society is free. Somebody is always going to pay for it, even if it's in the form of taxes.

obviously. I don't know who you are arguing against. When we say "free", we mean taxpayer-funded.
7/8/2020 4:36 PM
Well, if it is being payed for by someone, it is not free. Like I said in my first post, I wasn't arguing against the idea. It makes sense to make contraceptives available. But it is not free, just like Bernie Sanders free education would not be free. My son was saying the looting was okay when it was at Walmart or a major corporation. I asked him where he thought the insurance companies got that money? He said "I don't know" I had to explain they paid from all the insurance premiums they charge. Then I told him that Walmart's premiums would go up, and where do he think Walmart would be getting that extra money? Again, he had no answer. I told him Walmart will just raise their prices, so we (or the people who go to Walmart) would end up paying for the looting, not the insurance company. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH!!!

speaking of which, I found this funny. A friend of mine (yes, I do have friends) received a message from the Trump campaign offering him a free Trump?pence sign to put on his lawn. All he had to do was donate $20 to get his "free" sign! LOL

Since I don't want you "correcting" me every time I make this argument in the future, wylie, just assume that when I say "free" in the context of a handout, I mean taxpayer-funded.

If Viagra is covered by insurance for men than birth control (a far more essential service and item) should be free for women. The only reason it is not is because of misogyny.

well, I don't want you saying free when it isn't, so why can't you just say taxpayer funded??? Just kidding. I won't correct you when you wrongly refer to something as free anymore! :)

wait? If birth control should be free for women, why shouldn't viagra be free for men? Shouldn't they either both be covered by insurance or both be free?

Birth control is probably more important, since women are the ones who actually have the kids. I doubt free Viagra would benefit society much.

Of course, coreander is right. Viagra is only covered now because of stigma around birth control.

You are right. They are not really comparable. birth control should be available long before viagra should be. I was just giving coreander a hard time.
