3 Finger Mystery Topic

It's a mystery (at least in my mind) why many more owners use the 1908 Mordecai over the 1909 version. This has puzzled me since the price upgrading. Here are a few side-by-side comparisons.

First, just the raw stats.

1908 listed 1st

Innings: 329/363
IP/G: 7.10/6.85
ERA: 1.49/1.31
OAV: .195/.202
WHIP: 0.84/0.87
ERC: 1.36/1.46
BB/9: 1.41/1.39
K/9: 3.54/4.52
HR/9: 0.03/0.03

Seems pretty even here.

Some owners like to use "+" stats.

ERA+ 160/197
OAV+ 119/120
WHIP+ 136/139
ERC+ 184/194
BB/9+ 184/209
K/9+ 105/126
HR/9+ 422/469

Still pretty even...but the numbers lean slightly toward 1909.

Now, the "#" stats

ERA# 1.90/1.63
OAV# .211/.212
WHIP# 0.94/0.94
ERC# 1.72/1.74
BB/9# 1.59/1.48
K/9# 4.02/5.21
HR/9# 0.5/0.5

Again...very even.

Total Salary

08 - $15.904,677
09 - $15,354,134

Here is what baffles me.
$/IP

08 - $48,342
09 - $42,297

I understand why the 08 version is higher as he was drafted more.

Why do the majority of owners choose the higher priced 1908 version when they are so similar? Is it the difference in IP/9? There's only a difference of 0.25...approximately 4 pitches a game. I just cannot see paying the extra $6,000+/IP for versions that are so similar.

Those of you that prefer 08 over 09 please let me know what sways your decision. Or if anyone wants to give their reasons for seeing 08 as the better buy, I'm all ears!

Thanks for looking!

When the difference in salary doesn't matter, I'll take the 1908 combo of .195 OAV and 119 AVG+ over the 1909 version's .202 OAV and 120 AVG+.

At the caps they are both viable I'd rather allow slightly fewer hits than slightly fewer walks.

When I want better value though, at perhaps a bit lower cap, then 1909 all the way. Underrated great season.

Thanks for replying. I can see that...and it does seem to make a difference at higher caps. In 140M+ leagues the 08 versions seem to slightly outperform my 09. At 110-120M, the 09 version is the choice for me because of limited funds. Thanks again.

In jtpsops' $140M Take Two league right now, the owner with Brown is getting way better results from 09:

08: 33 GS, 188.7 IP, 4.39 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, .271 OAV
09: 34 GS, 237.7 IP, 2.04 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, .224 OAV

Both versions have started every time at 100%, and of course same ballpark and defense.

Maybe just a fluke and it will even out. We're 98 games into the season, so I'll follow up after.

I think a lot of people just get seduced by the 0.84 vs 0.87 WHIP

I agree, Mike. Is that worth the extra $6,000/IP? I usually don't play much above 140M anymore, so for me, the '09 version is the best buy. The extra cash can go somewhere else.

I actually always use 1905 of Mr. Brown, never ever fails me. Open league of course though...

Final stats from the Take Two League (team played at Veterans Stadium):

1909 Brown: 22-16, 2.67 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 370.2 IP, 341 H, 86 K, 94 BB, 4 HR
1908 Brown: 26-16, 4.14 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 319.1 IP, 365 H, 59 K, 104 BB, 2 HR

Team went 94-68, is 2nd seed in playoffs.

Thanks red...that's surprising.

I'm glad you brought this up as I've pondered the same thing. I have often compared the '08 and '09 versions and can safely say I always go with the lower $/ip 1909 version of the Trice Fingered. I like having the extra innings available and use the money to beef up some other position. Having noticed the same thing mensu brings up, at one time I looked up Moredcai's hitting stats (believing the '08 version's increased cost per IP might be, at least partially, attributable to his being a better batter). That's not the case either.
