Just putting a place together where we can share interesting observations, thoughts on how the experiment is going, etc...

From a high level I plan on posting weekly updates highlighting W/L records, Raw # of errors, FLD%, RA/9, OAV+E, WHIP+E, HR allowed, and HR/9 allowed for each the Deadball and Modern teams (combined into each group, as well as contrasted individually to their identical counterpart). Are there any other metrics or benchmarks any of you would like to see me highlight and track as we go? After the season is over, I'll post a more robust summary with my thoughts and I will also invite input and interpretations from each of you on your thoughts on how this worked and what we have learned and/or take away from this test.

I will also likely point out any individual player performances that seem to stand out in any fashion towards any of these metrics or in any way that might speak to the goals of the league.

From this first sample, the effect of errors does seem to negate the advantage of deadball pitchers in terms of OAV and WHIP, but the HR advantage still seems to favor overall run allowances of the deadball teams. The errors bring the RA/9 gap closer, but it's still fairly wide and the HR rate seems to be the primary driver in that difference. Obviously, if offenses are the same and you're allowing less runs, you're likely to win more, and right now that difference in W% seems to be mirroring the HR/RA rate difference fairly closely in favor of the deadball teams. It'll be interesting to see how this continues to play out.

Seeing the same results so far, though the gap is narrowing. After the first checkin, the gap on ERA was 1.04 in favor of deadball teams and a gap of 0.84 in terms of RA/9. In this second checkin those gaps have both narrowed to 0.85 and 0.66, respectively. The deadball teams have committed 206 more errors thus far, for a FLD% difference of .009. Modern teams still have a narrow (marginally similar) OAV/WHIP after accounting for errors, though the HR/XBH effect still seems to be the biggest factor. It looks like we're also seeing the effect of fatigue as deadball pitchers don't get as many pitches and it seems though they're cheaper per IP, you may need to buy more IP for the same usable IP. We're still early and there's still a good amount of speculation, but the stats are below for perusal:

Overall, it looks like things are starting to balance out. The severe fatigue effects seem to be limited to 4 teams, 2 each deadball and modern. The modern teams are seeing their lead in terms of OAV and WHIP improvement widen, and the HR and RA/9 deficit narrow. The run deficit is still tracking fairly close to the HR deficit. Most importantly, the deadball teams still have the advantage in RA/9 and W%, though both have narrowed week to week. It's still a noticeable gap.

My deadball team has hit 61 HRs and my modern team has hit 39. This makes some sense if you think about it - my deadball team only has ONE other deadball team in our division, but the modern team has TWO deadball teams in our division. I don't think that's the whole explanation, but it's interesting to think about.

My deadball team also has 10 more passed balls through 65 games (30 vs 20)

Oddly enough, my modern team has hit more HR than my deadball teams (63 vs 58).

Same story as last update, small narrowing of the gap, but deadballers still exceeding the overall value of the modern pitchers on the strength of XBH allowance which has suppressed their runs allowed comparatively. Modern pitchers have continued to narrow the RA and HR gap and take a wider lead on adjusted OAV and WHIP.

I don't think the modern pitchers will fully narrow the gap, but it is interesting to see how close they come and to also see first hand the value of XBH/HR suppression in terms of run allowance.

The modern pitchers have been slowly closing the gap in RA/9 and have been growing a wider gap on error adjusted OAV & WHIP, but I didn't expect them to fully close the RA/9 gap this quick, if at all. The error adjusted OAV gap now has the modern pitchers ahead .286 to .297, the adjusted WHIP sees them ahead 1.56 to 1.67 and the RA/9 gap is still in the deadball court, but statistically insignificant with a 5.45 to 5.48 lead. The deadball teams still have a lead in wins, but even that gap closed by more than half over the last week. It's looking like the modern players may end up proving more valuable despite the XBH/HR gap...

After 115 games, both my teams are 64-54. They’re a lot closer than I thought they’d be (expected my deadball pitching to be a lot worse than it has been)
