For those who don't know me, I currently run the site's longest regressive league (started in 2006, now heading into the 1934 playoffs). It's been a blast to run and I want to start another one...but with some twists. So here's my idea:
This league would be modeled after British soccer (hence the league name). This would be a 24 team league, but actually subdivided into a Premier League (the top tier) and the Championship League (the bottom tier). After every season, the top 2 teams in the Championship League (CL) would move up, while the bottom 2 teams in the Premier League (PL) would get relegated. Logistically, I would probably run this as a standard 24-team league without interleague play, with the NL acting as the Premier League and the AL as the Championship League--so the NL LCS would really determine the true PL champion, while the two teams in the AL LCS would be the ones getting promoted, and then the World Series could be our version of the FA Cup. But the true bragging rights would be for the NL LCS champion.
The other tweak would be to make the draft more equitable, which (along with relegation) will help prevent tanking. So, all non-playoff teams will be entered in a weighted lottery for the top 4 picks (so, the worst team would have a 17% chance of earning the first pick, the best non-playoff team would have a 2.5% chance). Picks 5-16 would be inverse order of regular season record for non-playoff teams. Picks 17-18 would be the CL LDS losers. Picks 19-20 would be the PL LDS losers. Pick 21 would be the CL runner-up, Pick 22 would be the PL runner-up, pick 23 would be the CL champion, and pick 24 would be the PL champion.
Trading IS allowed, but trading between PL and CL teams would only be allowed during the offseason.
My plan would be to have a normal 24-team league for the first season (2019, since 2020 was a cluster) and then the top 12 records from that season would be the PL for 2018. My goal would be to have 50 PL seasons (2018-1969) and then stop since it's hard to support 24 sim teams pre-1969. Alignment would change from season to season based on previous year's finish.
No DH. Would allow manually drafted AAA. Every team would pick a current stadium (as long as it corresponds to a team that existed in 1969) and then would use that franchise's appropriate stadium each year. We'll also "draft" British PL or 1st Division soccer clubs to use as your team name.
I'm excited about the idea as I type it...hope it's as exciting in practice. Hit me up with questions as you have them.
