isn't the D rating based on the same formula that's been applied to previous seasons?

I would assume so

With every new season's release, the old-time players get less and less viable as options. The game really does need some sort of era adjustment to even the playing field.
For instance, how can today's players have such greater efgs, yet also so much better (in general) Defensive ratings? From a strictly #s standpoint, that makes no sense.

block % may be one (small) contributor - bballref.com's glossary says blk% is an estimate of the % of opp two-point attempts blocked by X while on the floor

if I am reading that right it means that a pre-merger guestimated blk% from when there were no 3pa is definitely not the same as a modern era blk% where a significant % of shots are not accounted for at all so 20-21 Rudy's 4.6 blk% is fluffed and all of Wilt's 4.5+% seasons are nerfed (and Mister Russell's are...? well they don't exist because WHATIF)

I think blk% factors into the D ratings formula

edit: (also this begs the question: does the sim use blk% as a make/miss equation factor on only 2pa or does simmy apply it as a moderating factor for any attempt? if the latter golden oldies are getting nerfed coming and going (slightly))

wis doesn't use the same blk% as bball reference; they use all shots, not just twos. Go check literally anybody that has a real blk% and you'll see.

how do they get their estimate of attempts against?

same way bball reference does except that wis doesn't subtract 3pa

BLK% - Block Percentage (available since the 1973-74 season in the NBA); the formula is 100 * (BLK * (Tm MP / 5)) / (MP * (Opp FGA - Opp 3PA)). Block percentage is an estimate of the percentage of opponent two-point field goal attempts blocked by the player while he was on the floor.

huh - I suppose I thought it was going to be more exacting (and I'm not sure how they could be short of just recording every single play for every single player) but ok

most of the advanced stats are done the same way. It isn't exact, but the margin of error is actually really low once you have - you guessed it - a big enough sample size.

There are also so many players listed at PG (except Ben Simmons ), regardless if they ever played the position. Another questionable aspect of this batch. According to them, we have 235 point guards and only 69 shooting guards...

D teams are out

I know Matisse Thybulle is fantastic defensively, but he only started 8 games and played only 1298 minutes. I guess he must be really good.

yeah I don't get that

It would be nice if they updated the ratings.

Scott is working on it as we speak, I am certain
