hahaha. That's a tough choice. Lately I like "Le Noise" a lot!

Sometimes it's "Freedom"

And then again..........it'll be "Zuma".

It's never Landing On Water!

LOL.

The ONLY album on that list I would call great is REM.
I was owning/operating a CD/Music store in 1992.
I purchased the new releases for the store every week for all of 1992.
REM was huge and a great LP.
The Alice N Chains releases sold real well and have some outstanding stuff.
The Black Crowes release was VERY spotty, but showed promise.
The rest of the list were just mainstream pablum!
Thoughts on Rage?
Tool - Opiate was released in 1992 also!
I think their lead singer has a killer voice but not the biggest fan of their music overall.
I like A Perfect Circle much better than Tool because their sound is more diverse.

Sorry folks, but the answer we were looking for is 1969.

Although 1971 is definitely a close 2nd.

Every one of the above listed recordings was either a stellar 4 or 5 star rated album or was arguably a genre defining/creating release.

Highlights among the highlights include
Miles Davis In a Silent way the album which created Jazz/Rock fusion.
King Crimson's debut which arguably began Progressive Rock.
The Beatles final recording and IMO their best album.
Led Zeppelin's debut.
Temptations Cloud Nine which ushered in psychedelic soul.
Flying Burrito Bros. & Poco's debut which are probably the first Country/Rock albums.
The Stooges debut along with MC5 were precursors of Punk.
The Who's Tommy, while maybe not the official first Rock Opera, was certainly the first to be ccommercially successful.
and Bob Marley's debut which introduced Reggae to the masses.

I wouldn't say sales figures have nothing to do with great music. Most of the albums discussed in this thread are in the top 100 all-time in album sales. You don't see Nickelback near the top of the list!

I was just curious about album sales and wanted to see what years had multiple top-selling albums. It's a decent barometer to start this discussion.
One only need look to the list of top selling songs of all time and you soon realize exactly what was hinted at concerning "lowest common denominator".

The list is remarkably surprising, at least to me, and features a LOT of pure garbage.

Uofa2 yes it is very hard to top, especially considering the impact many of those albums had on the future of music.

Not listed
YES and Genesis both released their debuts in 69 also, but imo they were still fleshing out their sound and neither album is very good.

Fairport Convention - Leige and Leaf is arguably the best of the three albums they released in 69, but in general I, personally, have never been a fan of the band.

Elvis - From Memphis. Important because it was his first non movie soundtrack album in nearly a decade.

Jethro Tull Stand Up which began the era of the new direction with Ian Anderson as the sole leader.

Sir Douglas Quintet's Mendocino, another Country/Rock album, but with a unique "Cal/Mex" sound.

Arzachel, a very good single album released by college buddies who went separate ways after this release. The album increases in song length and strangeness as it goes,, ending with an 18 minute (or so) psychedelic trip that rivals ANY of that style.

Santana's Self Titled debut. It really belongs in my original list, but I overlooked it. One could argue Santana is his own genre.

Ike & Tina Turner Out of Season along with the Bee Gees Odessa are typically listed among top albums of 1969, but i find very little of either worth listening to.

bruceleefan, I was going by album sales in this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_albums

It seems we could do this exercise for every decade, and it seems to be based on musical tastes and preferences. Some people in this thread prefer late 60's to early 70's, and some, like myself, being raised in the 80's and 90's were just ingrained with that genre.

Blame MTV!
