2021 MLB Players Now Available Topic

There are players in the database already with both a hitting and pitching iteration from the same season. However, they are players that changed teams and it’s their split season version that had more pitching appearances than games in the field that got the pitching iteration, while their other split and combined seasons are all hitter only. They could probably do something similar where they have a hitting and pitching iteration. The pitching iteration will still have the batting stats baked in, so cost more (like Ruth and Caruthers) because of the value of the bat, while the hitting iteration won’t have an increased salary because of the pitching stats since they can’t be used. Just like these other players, since it’s still using the same player ID as the base it won’t let you draft both the hitter and pitcher at the same time, but it would at least allow you to draft Ohtani as a hitter or as a pitcher.

1886 Abner Powell is one I know off the top of my head for those who need to verify for themselves.

How come no pitching season for Shohei Ohtani?
Ohtani had more appearances as a position player. You don't get both.
I really don't understand why there's not 2 instances of him in the sim. 1 as a batter, a separately draftable instance as a pitcher. Doesn't seem like Rocket science.

Make it take 2 roster spots to get both iterations
Agreed.

something NEEDS to be done with Ohtani to make him playable as both
Can’t do both. You can’t draft two versions of the same year from a player. It’s one or the other
I'm not sure how you see this as an impossibility. One absolutely can code this to make it doable. Just as there are 2 players named Jose Ramirez in 2016, one a braves pitcher, the other a Cleveland infielder. The names are the same but they are coded as different players and you can have them both on your team. Code Pitcher Ohtani as one player and Batter Ohtani as a separate player.

I only see 26 hitters and 17 pitchers when I filter by first season

How many should there be? Not nearly all rookies have qualifying stats of 25 IP or 50 PA.

Skye Bolt is a cheap PR and def replacement

For reference, here are the Baseball Reference pages for the three 2021 Luis Garcia's.
The Houston Pitcher, https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/garcilu05.shtml

The St. Louis pitcher https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/garcilu03.shtml

The Washington infielder, https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/garcilu04.shtml

The Cardinal pitcher was born in 1987 in the Dominican, the Astros pitcher was born in 1996 in Venezuela, the Nationals infielder was born in 2000 in New York state.

check out combined season trea turner???

Lad version 646 pa,. 904 ops#, fielding 2b c/b+, ss b-/b-, $6,619,960
Wsh version 646 pa, .904 ops#, fielding 2b c/c-, ss b-/d+ $5,974,360

That seems odd for a combined season player in the same league

His SS RF/9 for WAS 3.72, 1.50 for LAD, a significant amount

Defense is definitely the reason - but if it’s combined, wouldn’t they both be the same?

that is what i was trying to get at.....I mean it's cool to have a couple of different versions of the guy, but I would think combined is combined

There are a bunch of players with new MasterPlayerID's in 2021 who have previous seasons in the database. Example, P Rafael Dolis.

They seem to mostly be relief pitchers who have a gap in their seasons played. I have found about 10 of them already.

It looks as though they got Trea Turner's WAS SS combined fielding wrong. No way he rates that high, as neither partial was anywhere that good. The $6.6M version needs fixing.

I sent a ticket

There definitely should be more than 26 hitters when filtered by first year…Wander Franco for example disappears when you turn on the first year filter

the highest salary I see when using the first year filter for hitters is in the 1.5M range…that’s definitely not correct

Too bad, it would have been cool…..
