Can you go backwards from the first player in your trio and forward from the last player? Or is it one or the other?

Backwards from first player in chronological order and forwards from last player in chronological order.

I'm uncertain how the teammates thing works once you get outside the original 3. In the example above: when moving from say 1948 to 1951, the 1951 player must have been a teammate of the 1948 player during 1948?
Correct. See my examples in original description. You are twisting teammates from season to season. In your example whomever you choose to leap from 48 to 51 you would then use that player's teammates on his 1951 team eg

If I chose 48 Boudreau, and then chose 1951 Eddie Robinson (who was a teammate of Boudreau), I could then choose 1954 Minoso who was a teammate of Robinson, then I could choose 63 Sawatski who was a teammate of Minoso and on and on. Its fairly simple once you get the hang of it.

So, if first player in my trio is 2010, second player is 2011, and third player is 2014, I can select a teammate from player 1 in 2007 (or 2004, 2001, etc) and I can select a teammate from player 3 in 2017 and have both of them on my roster. I can build both ways at once.

No you choose one. Its an either or not an AND. My apologies for not being more clear. So that first move you make whether you choose to go backwards or forwards is critical to how your team is built.

In your scenario you either begin by going backwards from 2010 OR by going forward from 2014 (but that wouldnt work because you would not land on 2021). So in this scenario your only option is going backwards from 2010. If your last player was 2015 then yes you could go forward to 2021 and then start going backwards.

I'd like to give this a shot, tentatively with the trio of Honus Wagner, Fred Clarke and Tommy Leach from the 1900-11 Pirates.

1 question.

For teammates purposes.......... what team was Gavvy Cravath "on" in 1910?

Looks like none. Out of the league.

Wasn't that for war purposes and thus doesn't He qualify as on the team(s) he played for in 1909?

I don't see anything about military service. It looks like he spent 2 seasons playing for AA Minneapolis.

OK. Thought he might have been injured or in the Military.
