Low Cap players Topic

I enjoy the lower cap leagues, because I dislike teams filled with superstars, and want more realistic teams, some average guys, some below average guys and maybe a sprinkle of stardom.

$50 mil and below preferably, as low as $30, but $40-$50 mil is best.

those of you who also enjoy these, what players have you found seem to preform or over preform on a regular basis.

Ive had luck with pitcher 1903 Togie Pittinger in $40 and below.
As for hitters, 1985 Lonnie Smith always seems to work for me.

Common picks...
** 3.9mm Ben Zobrist is on every team is make, 80mm or lower caps. Excellent OBP, doesn't need rest, good enough D at 2b with positional flexibility.
** 3.3mm Gene Tenace is a lock for lower caps. Good obp with a little pop and respectable catcher defense. Only 515pa but you can backfill with scrubs.
** 3.9mm Maury Wills is ok. He plays up in lower caps because he'll steal more bases vs bad catchers.
** People love the 3.9mm Whit Merrifield because of A/A defense and tons of PAs, but I think a low obp guy with 0 pop is pretty brutal.

My cookies
** 3.8mm Eduardo Nunez - why doesn't anybody else use him?? He's like that Merrifield with more pop, just as many steals, and A/D defense at both 3b and SS. Total steal!
** 4mm Hal chase - never used him but am trying him out. Performance history very solid. 25+ hr and ok 1b defense

Lonnie Smith for sure as well as Jim Spencer…
I love using Stump Weidman in low cap leagues…While he will use up a big percentage of your pitching budget, he’ll pitch at 100% every other day and up up winning at least 40 games for you..,

94 Vince Coleman is a stud at 40 mil. He can lead off, without fatigue, all season and will steal 150-200 bases

1886 Jim Lillie is by far the most used player in the ultra low cap leagues ($30-40M). With a salary of $1,467,402 and 572 PA/162, he is by far the lowest $/PA players with over 500 PA’s. And he comes with B- range in the OF which is on the higher end in these low cap leagues. But, his performance can vary. His RL numbers:
GP PA/162 AB/162 H 2B 3B HR RBI RS SO BB SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
114 572 557 73 9 0 0 22 37 80 11 13 31 0.175 0.197 0.197 0.394

The seasons I have used him:
Sea G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO HBP SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS
6 161 616 62 166 17 1 4 78 24 69 2 8 14 0.269 0.297 0.320 0.617
7 162 650 62 166 19 0 6 54 13 109 5 16 21 0.255 0.275 0.312 0.587
6 161 607 44 129 16 2 5 47 21 88 1 5 18 0.213 0.240 0.270 0.510
5 162 674 55 136 11 1 1 37 21 91 1 8 13 0.202 0.227 0.226 0.452

All of the seasons above were played at Safeco but the variation is huge, a whopping .165 difference in OPS. Luckily, overall team performance is not largely affected as his two worst seasons were also his only two playoff appearances.

Like Lillie showed above, all of these players can also have large variations in performance.
There are many other players who are successful in these leagues. Just4me, gogotoads, fillies, jpeterso, sinatra, rbow, area51man, and many others I am forgetting at the moment, put together some phenomenal teams and use completely different players than I use with high success rates. There are many winning strategies in the low caps with a large variety of players who can make an impact.
