I have been on Whatifsports for quite sometime. You used to be able to research players with a /- 25K difference.

Now it is a large difference (1 million in most cases). In some leagues you have you pick AAA players. For the purpose of this discussion let's use below average players (Batters Below Average 364,170 to 1,574,999). Under the current setup it is very difficult to compare a 1.3 million player vs a 1.53 player.)

Does anyone know a different method of researching players?

Try using basic performance statistics. The $$$ amount is heavily dependent on PA's/IP so even a poor performer will cost $$$ if he has a lot of PA's or IP!
