The World of Midge Topic

I would like to welcome everyone to the World of Midge! A friend of mine and I were talking about how someone told Brock Purdy that he looked like Lee Harvey Oswald. So we were wondering how many younger people don't know who Lee Harvey Oswald is. We know. We know who shot Abe Lincoln. I know that President Garfield and President McKinley were both shot and killed too, but I couldn't tell you the names of the assassins without looking it up. One of the guys put a cast on his arm and hid the revolver inside the cast. Anyhow...

What I would like to do is share with some of you younger people the origins of the nicknames of professional teams. Enjoy!

The Washington Wizards

Most of you are probably aware that the Wizards used to be the Baltimore Bullets, before they moved to Washington and became the Capital Bullets for one season before becoming the Washington Bullets. In the 1990s in Washington D.C., there were a lot of people killed when they were on the wrong end of a moving bullet. So Bullets team owner Abe Pollin decided that they needed to change the name of the team. He thought about when he was a kid and had a pet lizard. Problem solved! So they decided to change the name of the team to the Washington Lizards, but someone sneezed at the wrong time and the person writing the press release and ordering new jerseys and so on heard wizard instead of lizard heard the wrong thing. By the time somebody realized the mistake the league office had already made the change, the players were wearing the new uniforms and so on. Besides, the lizard had died years ago. Thus, the Washington Wizards were born.

The Los Angeles Lakers

Everyone knows that Los Angeles is the Land of 10,000 Lakes! Easy peasy.

The Utah Jazz

This is another easy one. The Utah Jazz play their home games in Salt Lake City, Utah, the birthplace of jazz music.

The Houston Astros

The Astros were originally the Colt .45s, but when they moved into their brand new stadium in 1965 the team thought it was time for a change, so they changed the team name to the Houston Astros, in honor of Elroy Jetson's pet dog Astro.

The Atlanta Braves

For this one we need to go back a few years. In 1812, Sir Winston Churchill was leading the British Navy on their way to New Orleans so they could fight the Battle of New Orleans against the stalwart Americans, led by country singer Johnny Horton. The British, however, took a wrong turn at Albuquerque and ended up in Atlanta Harbor, where they launched a bombardment of Fort McHenry Aaron, which defended Atlanta. Atlanta native Francis Scott Key heard the noise and decided to write a national anthem. Part of the lyrics of his new song were, "from the land of the free and the home of the Braves." Someone said, that would be a great name for a baseball team, so they wrote in down and put it in a shoebox and waited for baseball to be invented.

Houston Rockets

This team originated in San Diego as the San Diego Rockets. If you have learned anything from the documentary Anchorman we know that San Diego means "A whale's vagina." San Diego is mostly known as a gateway city to Tijuana, MX, or TJ for short. This is a specific reference to the "tricks" that the talented women of TJ would do with their lady parts while others would pick-pocket the unassuming and highly inebriated men coming to visit.

When the team moved to Houston after the 1970-71 season, mostly due to low ticket sales because of the lack of financial resources for reasons cited above, the Rockets maintained the moniker because of NASA's presence in Houston and the desire to own a rocket-propelled grenade launcher when traveling on the 610 Loop or Westheimer during the 10-hour long rush hour.

Midge to confirm.

Having lived in Atlanta in the past, I can confirm.

That is a very good question. I did some research and the only thing I have found so far is that the Philadelphia 69ers were banned due to their team logo being declared obscene.

Creative Writing

In order to further your education, we have decided to list some examples of creative writing.

Example #1

Bob told Dick that he was a very creative person. Dick said thanks.

Example #2

Sally decided to have a dinner party. There would be a total of six people at her gathering. She wanted to serve baked potatoes, but looked in her pantry and found out that she only had four potatoes. So Sally very creatively fixed mashed potatoes instead.

Example #3

Tommy had trouble saying the letter “R” when he was younger. One Friday, his teacher gave him the following sentence to go home and practice over the weekend: Robert gave Richard a rap in the ribs for roasting the rabbit so rare. On Monday he went back to school and his teacher asked Tommy to recite the sentence for her. Tommy replied, “Bob gave Dick a poke in the side for not cooking the bunny enough.”
