Welcome to the 21st annual WIS Championship!
This is my second year running this, and I have to start by thanking schwarze and ronthegenius for their tremendous help in working out the themes and providing guidance and support as we got this launched yet again. Good luck to all!
The WIS Championship involves 96 72 owners, each playing in six leagues (with different themes). The top 24 owners advance to Round 2, where they play in another 6 leagues. That's over 58,000 games played over the course of six months.
In 2004, ballantine proved that he was the best WIS owner in the world as he averaged 103 wins in round 1 and 93 wins (against the best of the best) in round 2. All 12 of his teams made the playoffs and four of those won the World Series.
In 2005, ronthegenius became #1 player as he averaged 99 wins in round 1 and 93 wins in round 2. Nine of his 12 teams made the playoffs and four of those won the World Series.
In 2006, ArlenWilliam captured the title with a strong round 2 performance, averaging almost 94 wins per team (next best was < 90). He had 9 of 12 teams make the playoffs, including 5 of 6 in the round 2.
In 2007, JohnGPF outlasted 2004 champion ballantine with a dominating round 1 performace (94 wins per team) followed by a solid round 2 effort (88 wins). He saw 9 of his 12 teams make the playoffs.
In 2008, jfranco77 won the closest race (to date) by edging out bigmc by only eight points (898-890). His dominant first round (98 wins per team) gave him the big lead. Overall, he had 7 of 12 teams make the playoffs with two WS titles.
In 2009, wildthings1 won an average of 96 games in each round and he had 10 of 12 teams make the playoffs. His final margin of victory (943-888) was the largest since ballantine in 2004.
In 2010, rbow923 improved on his 5th place finish in 2009, by averaging a consistent 94 wins over rounds 1-2, getting 11 of 12 teams into the playoffs and winning 2 World Series titles. Previous champions wildthings1 (3rd), ballantine (7th) and jfranco77 (9th) all finished in the top 10.
In 2011, brianjw kept rbow923 from being the first 2-time champion, by winning in the closest race ever (992 to 989). Brian's strength was his consistency. He only won one World Series, but he averaged over 95 wins and saw all 12 teams make the playoffs. It's the third time in the 4 years that a first-time entrant has won the Championship.
In 2012, mildnhazy used a strong round 2 playoff performance to prevent brianjw from winning back to back tournaments. Overall, his 12 teams averaged over 93 wins, 9 made the playoffs (four winning over 100 games), and two won the World Series.
In 2013, brianjw became the first two-time champion (almost three in a row) with a dominating performance in both rounds. He averaged over 100 wins per team in round 1 and over 94 wins per team in round 2. His 11 playoff teams resulted in 3 World Series championships. The second place overall finisher was closer to 12th place than to 1st place.
In 2014, WaitNSee won it all in his first Championship appearance. Although his 12 teams averaged only 91 wins in the regular season, he had very strong playoffs results, making 5 World Series (out of 9 playoff teams), winning twice. He outscored discodemo by 37 points in the Round 2 playoffs to win the Championship by only 7 points (the third closest margin ever).
In 2015, WaitNSee became the second 2-time champ and the first to go back-to-back. His 12 teams averaged 93 wins in the regular season. His 9 playoff teams resulted in 3 World Series wins. He edged out brianjw by only 17 points.
In 2016, WaitNSee asserted his dominance by completing the first-ever three-peat. He set numerous records including margin of victory (162.5 points) and total points (1,067). His 3 World Series wins in Round 2 alone (after also winning 3 in Round 1) only further distanced him from the competition. He retired after winning.
In 2017, brianjw returned to the top with a balanced performance that saw him win 3 World Series with 10 playoff teams. He more than doubled his point lead during a brutal Round 2, making a strong statement on his way to a third title.
In 2018, ozomatli completed his ascent to the top by averaging 96 wins per team. He led wire to wire in both rounds and had 6 of his 11 playoff teams reach the World Series (3 won). His 1,015 total points were the third most in tournament history.
In 2019, brianjw reclaimed the throne by once again delivering a consistent Round 2 performance. After finishing 10th in Round 1, he was the only owner with more than 3 playoff teams in Round 2 (he had 5), and the only owner to have all 6 teams finish over .500.
In 2020, ozomatli separated himself from the pack with a dominant Round 2 performance. He became one of the few owners in history to have multiple 100 win teams in Round 2 on his way to his second victory in three years.
In 2021, 06gsp jumped out to the lead early in Round 1 and never looked back, going wire to wire to win it all in his second Championship appearance. He averaged 103 wins in Round 1 and led all owners with 11 of 12 teams making the playoffs.
In 2022, boogerlips dominated the Round 2 leagues (averaging 94 wins) and jumped from 3rd place in Round 1 to a huge advantage going into the Round 2 playoffs. Despite playoff struggles, he still won by 41.5 points in capturing his first WISC title.
In 2023, adsmith182 and schwarze finished in a tie for 1st place! adsmith182 tied for most points in Round 2 and then won 2 World Series to secure the tie. It was the first WISC title for both of them!
