Capital Athletic Conference: Year 12-pres Topic

Thanks, France. I'm not sure how I didn't realize that I have no LP next season.
8/12/2011 11:20 PM
Scary that SMM has no SR, and Gallaudet only has 1 who is 9th on the depth chart playing 10.7mpg.  MW on the other hand has only 2 upperclassmen returning.  Oof.  I'll need one of those 10-0 soft nonconference schedules, which I already overscheduled for.

Thanks for the writeups.

Thanks France! I look forward to these writeups all season! I appreciate the puns. I think you're being hard on Baptist Bible though, I think if they schedule their non-conference correctly they have a decent shot at making the NT. Although I'd like to see them schedule more away games than they have so far.

disappointing offseason in general, led by Bauer's +0 despite a decent WE of 57. The only fun improvements came from Schuetz, who knows there may be an open starting role this season, and got himself to the gym over the summer... and even those moves were pretty pedestrian (+3 Ath/Reb, +1 Spd, +2 Def, +2 Sta).

7-4, RPI 208.  Yuck.  What looked like a decent OOC slate got ugly and CUA didn't step up and beat the good teams it faced.  This might get helped by these guys conference performances, but CUA will need much better than the formula-predicted 6 wins to make even the PIT.  Though this team depends on 2 quality SRs, their are only 4 total upperclassmen.  This looks like a down year.  Check out Williams' core G category improvements.  Hopper looks like the same scorer profile, though with more ST and less ATH (lacking Williams' Hopps?).  I'm not in love with the future at SF with both Bourget and Page looking much worse than what we are used to from the 3.  James and be Baird with for a season or two as he develops.  He pairs nicely with Coleman and Nixon.

2-10, RPI 341.  Yikes!    Two walkons hurt, the lack of rebounding hurts and the utter lack of LP seals the proverbial deal.  This is a team that will struggle to win in conference and got a little unlucky in nonconference play.  The good news is that there is only 1 SR and Shannon and Parson look good enough to give some sermons on proper backcourt play.  The bad news is everything else.  The LP threats needed to survive are nowhere on this roster.  Cameron looks like  a decent SG, even if his name sounds and Avatar looks like someone better suited for tennis than hoops.

10-1, RPI 4.  This is the year.  With 5 SRs (2 returning non-big), it is F4 or bust for Edelman's crew.  They've got PE, ATH, and D more than anyone in the country.  They are endangered by the wrong press matchup.  Their bracket pairings matter more than they do for most team.  Next season, each day should be a Dre Day.  Roger Jones has upside in ATH/SPD/PE/BH, projecting him as a future Jolly Roger scorer.

2-10, RPI 150 (SOS 7).  This squad, with only 2 SRs, probably didn't need to see the 7th hardest schedule in d3.  Another CAC North squad with very few SRs.  This one has 5 FR; strength in Numbers, I guess.  Donohoe looks like a true pass-first PG.  They are rare enough that you don't mind that play.  Pickard is a RS FR with a nice skill set, but a low SPD ceiling.  He'll never be a Number One scorer, no matter what Koop makes his Prime Directive.  The SF are both decent profiles, but Collins lack of improvement to date makes him look like future potential cut, Tonight, Tonight or sometime soon.  Moore doesn't have huge upside, but I'll take More of anyone with 65+ ATH and REB.

8-4, RPI 32.  Only 2 SRs,one (Johnny Walker) who is a monster, but there is no longer term play from a player who arrives on campus already of Drinking Age.  The RS FR Timinsky continues to progress (+17 in SPD??) Krause has a well-rounded profile but will need a superstar on her squad to be part of a champion (much like namesake Jerry).

11-1, RPI 10.  The 2nd of the CAC's 5 E8 candidates.  This team has a monotonous string of 50+ATH/70+REB bigs with Holt's 99 LP providing the nice headliner.  The 80+ SPD backcourt pairing also plays, probably with 30 more passing than any other combo in the conference (both 85+ ST).  Myers is the FR with a nice starting point rating-wise and decent upside.  It's too Early to tell on Early.  The monster ATH plays, but how quickly will that REB get in the 50's, much less NT level?

Thanks France.

Btw, Nick Ellis was my big signing and he gets no mention.  He's up 41 in 12 games.   I was kind of meh on Walker but needed play now passing and the IQ's fit.  Timi's development has saddened me given the WE so far, but the 17 spd is a bright spot.  He still has high upside in spd, as well as in per/reb/bh/pa and just had his first double digit game.  He looks more like a SG than a SF though the more he grows.  Heck I may need him to run point, with my lack of passing next year.   Krause is meh.  Dreams of steven springs makes me hope for a stereotypical SF and lures me to profiles like Krause without the proper upside to actually make use of that distro of rating.  I think I'm better off looking for the undervalued profiles like Cam Lofton who may not be as flashy as a Springs, but are equally impact contender level plaeyrs.  Hood's late interest in Krause gives me a little more hope though.  MW should be the crown jewel of my teams and it may be my worst offering at the moment combined with the dimmest future.

10-3, RPI 17.  That his lowest G speed is 84 is ridiculous.  That McCartha after Shall Returning for another FRESHMAN year is headed for 90 by the end of the year makes is Some Kind of Wonderful.  Holy Cow, Batman! West is a perfect RS big with decent but not overwhelming base but very nice upside and a decent WE.  Scott's the other FR; he may be giving us "Everything That He's Got, Captain" this year, but will get better and better with +42 OVR improvement to date.  This is a team that looked good for this year and for the foreseeable future, with maybe the best top to bottom perimeter play in all of D3.

10-3, RPI 45.  McCabe needs an 8-8 division run to make the NT.  It will be a challenge.  This is a decent team but with 96 against SMM, York, and Hood, there are only so many opportunities.  You have to like see the direction where Hedin is Heading, with 20+ improvement in PE and LP.  There is probably enough here for a PIT run next year, giving a little prestige bump to help McCabe bring in his guys.  The first installment -- JUCO Schultz (I Know Nothing About Him, I Know Nothing, Nothing!), Bergeson (doesn't do much for me, but should play as filler), and Walton (I love this recruit at The Thumper's prestige.  He should be good before you can say "Good Night, Jonboy").

8-5, RPI 123.  Now under Sim AI control.  Some people look at Terence Plath and see the Bell Jar half empty (9 ATH), others see the Bell Jar half full (67 SPD).  Even with a 1 troika in REB/DEF/BLK, with PE and P upside is a pretty outstanding Sim recruit.  The SFs and bigs (why didn't the Sim get another big?) are really not bad either.  Fraise is +11 LP this year, not a bad turn of the phrase; Hamman, particularly among the SFs, looks pretty good with decent upside and definitely doesn't deserve to be hung from Mordecai's gallows when a human takes over, a fate common among many Sim recruits.

8-5, RPI 13.  Here the real issue for NT qualification is going to be the 13+ wins.  I like his odds, but it'll be close.  This is a very impressive squad with only 3 SRs and a lot of improvement, particularly Shipman who has done yoeman's work while improving in his RS FR year.  Boyes is the only true FR.  A low REB guy, he's moving up and has Hunter to cover some of his faults.

12-1, RPI 32.  This is the 4th of the teams with real S16/E8 aspirations.  The SPD/ATH profiles are good and the G IQ's will help in the tourney.  Big picture, the lack of monster big rebounding with the absent G rebounding makes me a little fearful of their upsetability early in the dance.  I don't love the FR; Rogers is a poor version of MoJo and not the PG that this squad will be next season when it will be someone besides Mr Rogers neighborhood.  Champagne is decent, but not great looking SF; a nice role player paired with Doby (as the better REBer, LP guy), he won't be the reason if Hood gets another shot to pop the bubbly.

12-1, RPI 2.  The Deatheaters are the last of the E8 contenders in the CAC, and a legit F4 team.  I like the younger players here (there were no true FR); it's almost unfair that Brumback took the RS as a Sophomore.  He'll be a great 4th and 5th year player.  Long term, the big concern has to be the backcourt defense.  Though McAlarney is a great offensive player, it's easy to see Mateo filing that role admirably (look at those PE imprvements across the board).  There is no passing or defending G to replace Brown.  Coop probably would want you to note the +85 on Curtis Butler, his personally selected 99 WE recruit from last year.
