Zibanejad, Lundqvist lead Rangers to 5-3 win over Hurricanes

AP

NEW YORK (AP) Henrik Lundqvist doesn't know why he keeps having success against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Mika Zibanejad had two goals and an assist, Lundqvist stopped 39 shots, and the New York Rangers beat the Hurricanes 5-3 on Friday night.

Lundqvist improved to 3-0-0 against Carolina this season while stopping 125 of 132 shots in the wins. For his career, the veteran goalie is 33-12-1 against the Hurricanes.

''I think it's more as a team we seem to match up,'' he said. ''They have good speed, but for whatever reason we find ways to win. I know we have teams where it's the other way around. I don't really have an explanation for it.''

Artemi Panarin had a goal and two assists, Chris Kreider had a goal and an assist, and Ryan Strome also scored to help New York get its second win in six games (2-3-1). Tony DeAngelo and Jacob Trouba each had two assists.

Lucas Wallmark had a goal and an assist, Brett Pesce and Sebastian Aho also scored, and Teuvo Terravainen had two assists for the Hurricanes. James Reimer finished with 19 saves for Carolina, which has lost three straight after a 6-0-1 stretch.

''We weren't able to capitalize on the power play and they got two on theirs,'' Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said after his team went 0 for 5 with the man advantage. ''That was the difference of the game. That's hockey. We have to bounce back. It's a tough pill to swallow because we played a pretty good game.''

Aho pulled the Hurricanes to 4-3 as he scored from the left side for his 22nd at 1:40 of the third.

Strome then restored New York's two-goal lead with 6:11 left, converting Panarin's centering pass from the left corner for his eighth.

''We've been victims of letting leads slip away, or tie games,'' Strome said. ''So it was good to find a way to get the two points. ... That's a good hockey team over there. We knew they were going to bring everything in the third and we found a way to get it done.''

After falling behind early, the Rangers tied the score late in the first period and then had the first three goals in the second. That stretch included a tying goal by Carolina that was negated before the Rangers scored two more to go up 4-1.

''There were some crucial moments where we scored some big goals,'' Lundqvist said. ''Obviously their tying goal we turn back and then we score (to go up) 3-1 instead That's pretty big for our confidence.''

Kreider put the Rangers ahead 2-1 just 1:27 into the second period. Zibanejad brought the puck up the right side on a rush, faked a shot to draw Reimer to his side, and then passed across to Kreider on the left side and he fired it into the open side of the goal before the goalie could slide over. It was Kreider's 11th.

With the Hurricanes on extended power-play time after a pair of overlapping penalties, Aho appeared to tie the score about four minutes later but the Rangers challenged for offside on the play and the goal was disallowed after a review.

''You can only fend them off for so long,'' New York coach David Quinn said of the Hurricanes. ''I thought it gave us a little bit of a breather because it took a little bit (of time) to get reversed. We collected ourselves a little bit. ... Really a big, big momentum change in the game.''

New York then scored to take a two-goal lead at 7:29 as Panarin found the loose puck after Filip Chytil's pass from the right side in front rebounded through traffic to the left side and he put it in top shelf for his 21st.

Zibanejad got his second of the game - both on power plays - to give the Rangers a 4-1 lead as DeAngelo's shot from the right side was deflected into the air. It landed in front and Zibanejad quickly put it past Reimer for his 14th.

Pesce scored on a 2-on-1 rush, beating Lundqvist from the right side for his fourth with 2:49 left in the second.

The Hurricanes got on the scoreboard first as Wallmark fired a one-timer from the left circle off a pass by Terravainen at 5:15 of the opening period.

Zibanejad tied the score with 3:29 left in the first as he got a pass from Kreider from behind the net and quickly fired it into the top right corner from the right side in front. It was the Rangers' first power-play goal in five games.

''We've been having some pretty good looks on the power play, but haven't been able to convert,'' Zibanejad said. ''Today, we got two, so hopefully that will get us going now.''

NOTES: Strome appeared in his 100th game with the Rangers since he was acquired from Edmonton on Nov. 16, 2018. ... DeAngelo scores in OT, Rangers halt Leafs' win streak at 6

AP

TORONTO (AP) The New York Rangers were confident they would get scoring chances against Toronto, and they made the most of the them''.

Tony DeAngelo scored 51 seconds into overtime and the New York Rangers beat the Maple Leafs 5-4 on Saturday night, snapping Toronto's win streak at six games.

Ryan Strome had two goal and two assists for the Rangers (19-15-4). Artemi Panarin picked up his third assist of the night when he set up DeAngelo's winner in the first minute of the extra period.

? was surprised (goalie Alexandar Georgiev) played it to me,'' Strome said. ''... Sometimes in overtime you trade chances and Georgiev made one or two great saves and we went the other way. It feels good to get the win. It would have stung a little bit to not get the two points, but it feels good.''

Brett Howden and Mika Zibanejad also scored for New York.

i think they tilted the ice a little more than we'd like in the third,'' Rangers forward Chris Kreider said. ''They got very aggressive. I thought we did a good job of protecting the middle for the most part. Guys were blocking shots, doing the right things, getting pucks out on changes. We weathered the storm there and then obviously a big play in overtime.

''There was a buy-in tonight. Guys not necessarily felt their best after the schedule the way it was. It's never an excuse. Every team is dealing with their own stuff. For us to come in here on the road against a very good team, in a very hard building to play in, and come out with two points is big for us.''

Alexandar Georgiev stopped 44 shots.

''It's a good challenge,''Georgieve said. ''Winning is always fun, i'm glad for that. At the end of the day, it was exciting hockey.''

Auston Matthews scored twice to push the Maple Leafs (21-14-5) into overtime. William Nylander and Pierre Engvall also scored.

The Maple Leafs found out before the game that they lost defenseman Jake Muzzin, the only Stanley Cup winner on their roster, with a broken foot.

''We miss Muzz,'' said Toronto head coach Sheldon Keefe, now 12-4-1 since he took over. ''It's more than what he does on the ice for us. There are a lot of intangibles he brings from in the locker room to the bench, talking between whistles, and all those things.

Matthews agreed.

''Everything,'' he said when asked about Muzzin's absence. ''A lot of leadership, a lot of physicality. He held guys accountable in the dressing room. Obviously, we're going to miss him quite a bit, but it's an opportunity for others to step up.''

Toronto entered the final 20 minutes down 4-2. The Leafs pulled within one when Engvall redirected a point shot from Tyson Barrie with 13:38 remaining.

Moments after Matthews flubbed a chance to tie the game, he scored off a pass from Nylander, netting the tying goal with 53 seconds remaining in the third.

After Strome put his team in front 2-1 midway through the first period, the 26-year-old native of Mississauga, Ontario, scored another to give his club a two-goal lead early in the second period.

It was Strome's fifth and sixth goals to go along with six assists in 18 career games against Toronto.

In the absence of forward forward Ilya Mikheyev (wrist surgery), 23-year-old Adam Brooks made his NHL debut. The Winnipeg native played in 171 regular season and playoff games for the AHL Toronto Marlies before playing in his first NHL game.

The Maple Leafs entered the game 2-5-1 in the second game of back-to-back outings this season.

It did not start well for Toronto as Howden opened the scoring 1:41 into the game.

The Maple Leafs evened the score on the power play. From behind the net, John Tavares found Nylander out front.

But the Rangers went ahead 2-1 when Panarin picked off a pass into the middle from Engvall and set up Strome for the go-ahead goal.

The Rangers had an opportunity to go ahead by two goals, but Andersen stopped a penalty shot from Pavel Buchnevich a few shifts after Strome's goal.

Strome lifted the Rangers to a 3-1 lead early in the second period with a 56-foot slap shot.

Toronto pulled to within 3-2 when Matthews grabbed a loose puck and scored his 25th of the season. But Zibanejad restored the two-goal lead, coming down the right side and freezing Anderson before slipping a shot through his pads.

NOTES: The Maple Leafs were without forward Ilya Mikheyev (wrist surgery) and Muzzin (broken foot). Toronto announced before the game that Mikheyev would miss a minimum of three months to recover from a laceration to his right hand in New Jersey on Friday. He underwent surgery and spent the night in the hospital. Muzzin blocked a shot from Devils defenseman P.K. Subban in the first period. The Toronto defender finished the game, but has been listed week-to-week with a broken foot.

Neal records hat trick in 4-point game, Oilers top Rangers

AP

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) The Edmonton Oilers nearly allowed a dubious first in NHL history.

James Neal had three goals and an assist and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a goal and three assists as the Oilers built a six-goal lead and held on to beat the New York Rangers 7-5 on Tuesday night.

No team in NHL history has ever come back to win from a 6-0 deficit.

''We got a little passive in the third,'' Nugent-Hopkins said. ''They have some high-end skill that will make you pay if you sit back too much, but at the end of the day we got the two points and we're happy with the win.''

Leon Draisaitl, Josh Archibald and Kailer Yamamoto also scored for the Oilers (21-17-4) who snapped a two-game losing skid and won for just the third time in 11 games.

It was also the first time the Oilers have won a game on New Years Eve since 1985, going 0-13-3 with a tie during that span.

''I was one year out of being a rookie in the league, that is a long time ago,'' Oilers head coach Dave Tippett said. ''I found that stat hard to believe when I heard it, but if that is the case I am glad we were able to break the streak.''

Chris Kreider, Ryan Strome, Marc Staal, Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad scoredfor the Rangers (19-16-4) who saw a two-game winning streak come to an end.

Rangers head coach David Quinn said his team showed some tenacity by not giving up, but they should not have been in the situation in the first place.

''We showed some things we're going to need moving forward,'' he said. ''That being said, we can't lose sight of the fact we can't start a game like that and we have to build on that ending and carry that over.''

After allowing a goal 11 seconds into their loss to Calgary on Friday, the Oilers scored 11 seconds into their game against the Rangers on their first shot, as Zack Kassian made a backhand pass in front to Neal, who directed home his 17th of the season past New York goalie Alexandar Georgiev.

Edmonton took a two-goal lead on the power play nine minutes into the opening period as Neal tipped in a long shot by Oscar Klefbom for his second goal of the game.

The Oilers kept coming with yet another goal two minutes later as Nugent-Hopkins redirected in his eighth of the season off of an Ethan Bear shot, giving Edmonton three goals on six shots.

Edmonton went up 4-0 with another power-play goal with seven minutes left in the second frame as Nugent-Hopkins kicked the puck back to Draisaitl in traffic in front and he scored his 23rd.

The Rangers took a bench penalty out of frustration with the officiating and the Oilers scored another power-play goal just 12 seconds later. Connor McDavid dropped it back to Neal, who blasted in a shot for the hat trick.

Edmonton scored its third goal in less than three minutes as Archibald snapped home his third.

That chased an irate Georgiev from the net. Henrik Lundqvist replaced him.

The Rangers finally got one past Oilers goalie Mikko Koskinen as Kreider sent a one-timer into the net with 25 seconds remaining in the second period.

New York got another one back five minutes into the third as Strome converted on a great pass from Adam Fox.

The Rangers then gave the Oilers a scare with two goals in 38 seconds as Staal scored his second of the season and Panarin notched his 22nd to go along with three assists.

The comeback continued with 3:45 left in the third period as Koskinen made a glove save on a Zibanejad shot, but that glove was deemed to be well over the goal line.

The Oilers managed to finally put the game away with an empty net goal by Yamamoto, who was playing his first game of the season.

Gaudreau has goal, assist to lead Flames past Rangers 4-3

AP

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) Johnny Gaudreau opened the scoring and then set up the winning goal midway through the second period as the Calgary Flames snapped a five-game losing streak at home with a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers on Thursday night.

Less than three minutes after New York tied it 3-all, Sean Monahan gave the Flames their third lead at 8:22 of the second when he neatly finished off a pretty tic-tac-toe passing sequence.

Gaudreau fed a pass back to Noah Hanifin at the blue line and he immediately zipped a pass in front to Monahan, who used his quick hands to score his 14th of the season.

Mikael Backlund and Derek Ryan also scored for Calgary (21-17-5), which got a short-handed goal while the Rangers were on a 5-on-3 advantage. Cam Talbot made 24 saves to beat his former team.

Jacob Trouba, Filip Chytil and rookie Kaapo Kaako scored for New York (19-17-4). Rangers defenseman Adam Fox, a Flames draft pick, had three assists.

New York fell to 1-2-0 on a four-game road trip that wraps up Saturday night in Vancouver.

After getting off to shaky starts, Talbot and Henrik Lundqvist were perfect over the final half of the game. Talbot began his NHL career as Lundqvist's backup in New York for two seasons.

Beaten on two of the first three shots he faced, Talbot settled in and improved to 4-7-0.

Lundqvist, who gave up three goals on his first nine shots, ended up turning aside 25. His record fell to 9-9-3.

Down 3-2 after the first period, the Rangers tied it at 5:46 of the second on Kakko's long-range shot through a maze of bodies in front. It appeared Talbot didn't see the puck.

Calgary regained the lead, 3-2, at 13:18 of the first when Ryan got the puck high in the slot, spun and whipped a shot past Lundqvist.

Coming off consecutive home games in which the Flames fell behind 3-0 in the first period, it was Calgary that got the jump on this night with Gaudreau first to a loose puck in the neutral zone and scoring on a breakaway at 6:48.

The Flames then scored a rare short-handed goal while playing two men short when Backlund intercepted Tony DeAngelo's cross-ice pass and headed up ice on another breakaway. Backlund beat Lundqvist on a move to his backhand for his sixth goal of the season.

Backlund has three goals in his last six games after ending an 18-game drought.

But with time left still on the two-man advantage, the Rangers went right back to work and answered 26 seconds later with Trouba scoring on New York's first shot of the game.

Just 25 seconds later, on the ensuing one-man advantage, New York tied it with Chytil knocking in Kakko's rebound.

NOTES: Calgary's late-afternoon trade of Michael Frolik to Buffalo forced interim coach Geoff Ward to shuffle his lines. He returned Backlund to right wing on a line with Gaudreau and Monahan, and inserted center Mark Jankowski. ... New York left wing Chris Kreider played in his 500th NHL game. ... Trouba's goal was his 200th career point.

Rangers vs Canucks: Rangers Dominate Canucks But Lose On Late Goal

The New York Rangers were all over the Vancouver Canucks this evening, but a late third period goal by Tyler Myers gave Vancouver their seventh straight victory. New York controlled the play throughout all three periods this evening, but Jacob Markstrom played out of his mind and gave the Canucks a chance in this game. Alexandar Georgiev started in net for the Rangers tonight and had a relatively light workload until the game winning goal beat him late in the third period.

Up until this point in the game, the Rangers were just swarming the Canucks in their own zone but just couldn’t find a way to beat Jacob Markstrom. Vancouver had a short stint in the offensive zone late in the third period and Tyler Myers wound up scoring the game winning goal. The shot by Myers was relatively harmless in the sense that it didn’t have much power, but a screen in front of Alexandar Georgiev made the save that much more difficult. Georgiev was unable to see the puck around the screen and the Canucks took the lead with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.

With the way the Rangers played tonight, they certainly deserved a better result than the outcome. They controlled the play at even strength by a wide margin, but they ran into a hot goaltender. Following tonight’s tough loss, the Rangers will have two scheduled off days as they travel back to New York. The next game on the schedule is set for Tuesday night against the visiting Colorado Avalanche.

OFFICIAL: Rangers Recall Goaltender Igor Shesterkin

The Russian goaltender may finally get his long-deserved opportunity.

1/6/2020 10:16 AM

Panarin helps Shesterkin win NHL debut, Rangers beat Avs 5-3

AP

NEW YORK (AP) Igor Shesterkin admitted being nervous earlier in the day before his NHL debut.

''On my way to the arena, my hands were shaking,'' the 24-year-old Russian said through a translator. ''I couldn't even drink water.''

Then he gave up two goals on Colorado's first three shots before settling down to finish with 29 saves in the New York Rangers' 5-3 win over the Avalanche on Tuesday night.

''It wasn't how I would have ideally wanted (the start) to go, but I am very grateful for everyone's support, all my teammates and all the fans,'' Shesterkin said. ''Honestly, I wasn't panicking. I just kind of laughed it off, and I saved the next (few shots) and gained confidence as the game went on.''

Shesterkin was 15-4-3 with a 1.93 goals-against average and three shutouts in 23 games with Hartford of the AHL in his first season in North America.

Artemi Panarin had a goal and two assists, Mika Zibanejad and Ryan Strome each had a goal and an assist, and Chris Kreider and Brady Skjei also scored for New York. Jesper Fast had three assists and Tony DeAngelo added two as the Rangers snapped a three-game skid.

''There was a lot I liked about our game, not just our goalie,'' coach David Quinn said. ''I thought we played a thorough game. ... Everybody in that locker room realizes if we're going to have a chance to have the season we think we're capable of having, we certainly can't play the way we have the first 30 games where we've got the inconsistencies and that pond hockey approach from time to time.''

J.T. Compher scored twice and Nathan MacKinnon had a goal in his 500th game for Colorado, which has lost two straight. Andrei Burakovsky had two assists and Philipp Grubauer finished with 24 saves.

''I didn't like the game at all,'' Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. ''We didn't win enough races, we didn't win enough battles, we weren't physical enough when we didn't win the race. We got outworked, outskated.''

Shesterkin gloved Ian Cole's shot with 2:18 remaining to keep the Rangers ahead 4-3, drawing chants of ''Igor! Igor!'' from the Madison Square Garden crowd. He stopped all 13 Colorado shots in the third period.

The Avalanche pulled Grubauer for an extra skater with about two minutes to go, but Panarin sealed the win with an empty-netter with 28 seconds left.

Quinn liked the way his team played in the third period with a lead.

''We just continued to play,'' he said. ''I didn't think we took our foot off the pedal. ... We kept playing, established our forecheck, we defended well.''

The score was tied 2-all after 20 minutes, and Skjei gave the Rangers their first lead with their third straight goal on a long slap shot at 8:05 of the second for his sixth of the season.

Compher tied it 3-all when he converted a pass across the front of the crease from Burakovsky for his seventh with 8 1/2 minutes left in the middle period.

Strome regained the lead for New York a little more than two minutes later. Fast tapped the rebound of a long shot by Panarin to the right side to Strome, who fired it into the wide-open right side of the net for his 12th with 6:21 remaining in the second.

Compher got the Avalanche on the scoreboard on their first shot as he deflected Samuel Girard's pass to the front up over Shesterkin's shoulder at 4:44.

MacKinnon made it 2-0 on Colorado's third shot less than two minutes later as he stole the puck, skated in and put it through Shesterkin's legs for his 26th at 6:34.

Shesterkin gave up just one goal on the next 29 shots against an Avalanche team that came in averaging a league-leading 3.63 goals per game.

''We didn't really help him out in the beginning,'' Zibanejad said. ''I thought he played solid, really well. He came up with the saves when we needed him to. ... Good to see him get the first win.''

The Rangers pulled within one on a power play as Kreider tipped a pass from Strome past Grubauer from the right side for his 13th at 8:57.

Zibanejad tied it with 4:37 left in the opening period, deflecting DeAngelo's return pass past Grubauer for his 17th.

The game got chippy a minute later. Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren knocked down Colorado's Joonas Donskoi with a hard hit near the side boards. Avalanche teammate Nazem Kadri took exception and traded punches with Lindgren. Both Kadri and Lindgren were giving majors for fighting, and Kadri also received a minor for instigating and a 10-minute misconduct. A shaken-up Donskoi headed to the dressing room. Neither Donskoi nor Lindgren returned to the game.

NOTES: With the Rangers carrying three goalies on the roster, Henrik Lundqvist served as Shesterkin's backup and Alexandar Georgiev was scratched. ... Panarin has 10 assists and 12 points in the last six games. For the season, he has 57 points (22 goals, 35 assists) in 42 games. ... Strome has five goals and four assists in his last six games. ... Zibanejad has 10 goals and 16 points in his last 12 games. ... Colorado fell to 14-8-2 away from home, second to Washington (17) for the most road wins. The Avalanche, who lost 1-0 at the New York Islanders on Monday night, dropped to 7-3-1 in their last 11 road games. ... MacKinnon has four goals and 12 points over the last eight games. ... DeAngelo, Panarin lead Rangers past Devils 6-3

AP

NEW YORK (AP) An offensive outburst by defenseman Tony DeAngelo propelled the New York Rangers.

DeAngelo recorded his first career hat trick and added two assists as the Rangers beat the New Jersey Devils 6-3 on Thursday night. Rookie goaltender Igor Shesterkin collect his second career NHL win.

''He is always looking to make a play,'' Ryan Strome said of DeAngelo's five-point performance. ''He's got all the things you can't teach in a defenseman. It's special to see him out there.''

Artemi Panarin had a goal and two assists, and Jesper Fast and Chris Kreider also scored for New York. Kreider, Strome and Mika Zibanejad each had two-point games for the Rangers.

Shesterkin made 46 saves in his second consecutive start.

''He really absorbs the puck well,'' Rangers coach David Quinn said of his goaltender. ''He does a heck of a job not giving up those rebounds that are lying around the crease.''

Blake Coleman scored twice and Kevin Rooney added a goal for the Devils, who lost their third straight. Mackenzie Blackwood made 20 saves before being replaced by Louis Domingue at the start of the third period. Domingue finished with 11 saves.

DeAngelo completed his hat trick by scoring two goals in a 2:54 span in the second period, giving the Rangers a two-goal lead. He became the first Rangers defenseman to score three times since Reijo Ruotsalainen did it on March 17, 1982.

''He's had a pretty special season in a lot of ways,'' Quinn said of DeAngelo. ''He's got a unique skill set. His vision is uncanny; he is as good of a passer as I have been around. He just had it all rolling tonight.''

The Rangers took a 2-1 lead when Pavel Zacha committed a costly mistake midway through the first period. Shortly after a Devils penalty expired, the young forward tried to get a stick replacement from the bench while the Rangers had possession in the offensive zone. Zibanejad recognized the opportunity and found DeAngelo alone in the slot for his first goal of the game at 9:47.

DeAngelo capped off his three-point first period with a crafty assist from his own zone. He sent a pass the length of the ice and Kreider collected the puck behind the Devils defense. The power forward recorded his 300th NHL point with a nifty deke that gave New York a 3-1 lead at 12:16 of the first period.

''It's mental mistakes, lack of focus,'' Devils coach Alain Nasreddine said. ''As much as we execute on the offensive side, we're not executing on the defensive side. We can't be giving up six goals and expect to win.''

Panarin opened the scoring with a powerful one-timer at 5:42 of the first. Panarin has been superb for New York and will represent the team at the 2020 NHL All-Star Game later this month. DeAngelo and Adam Fox assisted on the play.

Kevin Rooney scored his first of the season when he jammed a puck past Shesterkin at 8:06 of the first, tying the score at 1-1.

Coleman knotted the game at 3-3 with consecutive goals. Late in the first period, Coleman redirected a shot past Shesterkin to pull the Devils within one. Then, at 8:56 of the second period, he scored a controversial goal upon review. The referees awarded the Devils a goal because Jacob Trouba caused the net to come off its moorings.

Fast netted his seventh of the season at 12:56 of the third period. Panarin tallied the secondary assist and his third point of the game, giving him five games with three or more points over the last seven contests.

NOTES: Panarin recorded his 20th multi-point outing in 43 games this season. . The Rangers and Devils are two of three NHL teams (along with Vancouver) that have had two goaltenders 24-years-old or younger appear in at least one game this season. . The Rangers have won eight of their last nine games against Metropolitan Division opponents. . New York has tallied at least three goals in 28 of 43 games during the 2019-20 season. . The Rangers scratched defenseman Libor Hajek, forward Micheal Haley and goaltender Alexandar Georgiev. . Devils forward Jack Hughes missed his fourth straight game with an upper-body injury and Jesper Bratt missed his second consecutive game with a lower-body injury.

Robert Bortuzzo, Vince Dunn, Zach Sanford and Jaden Schwartz also scored for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who are 11-2-1 in their last 14.

The Blues won their eighth straight home game, their longest such streak since winning 10 in a row from April 16-Oct. 12, 2013.

Filip Chytil and Brett Howden scored for the Rangers, who fell to 1-5-1 in their last seven on the road. The Rangers had a two-game winning streak snapped.

Jordan Binnington made 21 saves for his ninth win in the last 10 starts. He is tied with Tampa Bay's Andrei Vasilevskiy for the most wins, with 22.

Perron, who has spent parts of nine of his 13 seasons in St. Louis, said being voted in by the fans throughout the league was extra special.

''You hope you can go at least one time in your life,'' Perron said. ''It's really cool,''

Perron blasted a one-timer past Henrik Lundqvist early in the second period for a 3-1 lead. It was his 20th goal of the season and his NHL-leading eighth game-winning goal.

His selection to the All-Star game, which will be played later this month in St. Louis, was not a surprise to his teammates.

''He's been doing this for a long time,'' Bortuzzo said. ''He deserves it. He's been great all year. He's huge for us and everybody knows that.''

New York jumped in front on Chytil's goal just 94 seconds into the game.

The Blues responded with three scores. Bortuzzo converted on a breakway after coming out of the penalty box to tie game 1-all. It was his first goal of the season and his first regular-season tally since Feb. 14, 2019.

The rare goal - his 15th in 362 career games - sent the St. Louis bench into a frenzy.

''It was all spur of the moment,'' Bortuzzo said. ''I just shot it - it found a way home.,''

Bortuzzo says it was the first breakaway goal of his NHL career.

''I want it to be on record that I'm not happy with my teammates how surprised they act every time I do score,'' Bortuzzo joked. ''There was some laughter on the bench.

The goal seemed to ignite the Blues attack.

''We tried to bounce back from that right away and obviously it's something you don't want to happen, but you have to move past it and focus on that next shift.,'' New York defenseman Brady Skjei said.

Dunn scored off a pass from Ivan Barbashev for a 2-1 lead with 1:19 left in the opening period to send the Blues off and running.

St. Louis, Boston, Washington all have 65 points after play Saturday.

New York has dropped four in a row on the road.

''We felt the last couple games we were playing good hockey. We want to bring the same energy, the same mentality home and away,'' Skjei said.

Panarin has 2 goals, 3 assists as Rangers beat Islanders 6-2

NEW YORK (AP) Rangers coach David Quinn isn't surprised by anything Artemi Panarin does.

Panarin had two goals and three assists to match a career high with five points, and the New York Rangers beat the rival New York Islanders 6-2 in their first meeting of the season Monday night.

''Every now and then he one-ups himself, and he did that again tonight,'' Quinn said. ''When you think you've seen it all, he just does so many great things out there for us.''

Panarin has 26 goals and 41 assists in his first season with the Rangers after signing a seven-year, $81.5 million contract as a free agent last summer. He is the second player in franchise history to have at lest 67 points in the team's first 45 games - Jaromir Jagr in 2005-06 was the first - and the first to have at least 40 assists in the first 45 games since Jagr did it in 2006-07.

Panarin had a career-high 87 points in 79 games for Columbus last season, and is well ahead of that pace.

''Nothing new, playing the same as I was before,'' Panarin said through a translator. ''Just trying to play each game 100% and see how it goes.''

Jesper Fast had a goal and two assists, Adam Fox added a goal and an assist, and Chris Kreider and Jacob Trouba also scored to help the Rangers get their third win in four games overall and fifth straight at home. Brady Skjei had two assists.

Alexandar Georgiev stopped 32 shots while starting for the first time in four games. Rookie goalie Igor Shesterkin got the nod in two straight and veteran Henrik Lundqvist started the previous game.

Jordan Eberle and Brock Nelson each had a goal and an assist for the Islanders during their eighth loss in 13 games (5-6-2). Semyon Varlamov made 29 saves on 35 shots before being pulled midway through the third period. Thomas Greiss stopped the one shot he faced over the final 9:45.

''Their top guys were better than our top guys,'' Islanders coach Barry Trotz said. ''I thought our level of battle wasn't where I expected it to be tonight. ... We got what we deserved.''

Panarin, facing the Islanders for the first time in the regular season since spurning them to sign with the Rangers last summer, increased the lead to 4-1 when he backhanded the puck past Varlamov on a breakaway 49 seconds into the third period.

Panarin got his second of the night and 26th of the season on another breakaway, as he beat Varlamov from the right side at 8:54. It gave him his second career five-point game, and first since Dec. 8, 2017, at New Jersey while playing for Columbus.

Trouba made it 6-1 with a slap shot off a faceoff on the power play with 9:45 left. That ended Varlamov's night.

Nelson batted the deflection of Eberle's shot out of the air and over Georgiev's left shoulder for his 16th with 7:12 remaining.

With the score tied 1-all after 20 minutes, Kreider redirected Panarin's shot past Varlamov for his 15th at 5:06 of the second to give the Rangers the lead.

Georgiev stopped an attempt by Noah Dobson near the midpoint of the second, then made a kick save on Anders Lee's try on the rebound.

Fox made it 3-1 as he got the puck at the right point, skated up the right side and fired it past Varlamov between his left pad and glove with 8:49 left. It was the defenseman's sixth of the season and first since Nov. 30 at New Jersey.

The Islanders picked up the intensity and outshot the Rangers 9-0 over the final 4 1/2 minutes of the middle period, but Georgiev stopped them all.

''Obviously, I have to keep the score 3-1 and I just tried to battle through that one,'' Georgiev said. ''The guys played really well and I managed to keep the score that way.''

The Islanders had the first three shots on goal in the first minute of the game, before the Rangers picked up the pace and finished the period with a 17-7 edge in shots.

Eberle got the Islanders on the scoreboard just 18 seconds in, putting the puck past Georgiev from the right side on the game's first shot. It was Eberle's fifth of the season.

''That happens,'' Panarin said. ''We tried to just brush it off and continue to play our game.''

Two fights broke out nearly two minutes later, first between the Rangers' Michael Haley and the Islanders' Ross Johnston. Before the ensuing puck drop, the Islanders' Matt Martin and the Rangers' Brendan Smith dropped their gloves and traded punches, earning game misconducts and ejections for a second fight during the same stoppage of play.

Fast pounced on a rebound of Panarin's shot and knocked it in from in front for his eighth to tie it at 8:13.

''We did a really good job of recovering from our poor start,'' Quinn said. ''After the first four or five minutes of the first period we got our legs under us. We really established the tempo we needed.''

NOTES: Panarin has had at least three points in six of the last nine games, totaling six goals and 16 assists during that stretch. ... The Rangers have won three of the last four meetings after losing 12 of the previous 13 since the start of the 2015-16 season. The teams play three more times this season, including twice in the next eight days. ... The Rangers improved to 16-0-2 when leading after two periods. ... Former Rangers C Derick Brassard faced them for the first time since signing with the Islanders in the offseason. He had an assist on Nelson's goal. ... The Islanders are 11-10-2 since a franchise record-tying 17-game point streak (15-0-2) left them at 16-3-2 on Nov. 23.

Kreider scores late to lift Rangers over Islanders 3-2

AP

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) Chris Kreider and the New York Rangers like they way they've been playing lately. Beating the rival New York Islanders for the second time in four days was a big confidence boost, too.

Kreider scored a power-play goal with 25 seconds left to give the Rangers their fourth win in five games, 3-2 over the Islanders on Thursday night.

''As the season's going we've started to do a lot of the little things that have given us opportunities to win games and be in games,'' Kreider said. ''We've had a stretch here where we've definitely done a better job of that.''

With the Islanders' Derick Brassard off for cross-checking earlier in the final minute, Kreider was at the right side of the net and knocked in the rebound of Mika Zibanejad's shot for the tiebreaking goal.

''Mika got a good shot off and it just sat there for me,'' Kreider said.

Zibanejad and Tony DeAngelo also scored as the Rangers beat the Islanders for the fourth time in the last five meetings after losing 12 of the previous 13 matchups. Alexandar Georgiev stopped 38 shots to improve to 4-1-0 against the Islanders, who faced the Rangers at Nassau Coliseum for the first time in nearly five years.

The Rangers also won 6-2 at home Monday night in the teams' first meeting of the season.

''They test your mettle, they test your mental toughness, they test your physical toughness,'' Rangers coach David Quinn said of the Islanders. ''To come in here and get two points certainly is a great sign for growth.''

Josh Bailey and Anthony Beauvillier scored for the Islanders, and Semyon Varlamov finished with 25 saves.

''I thought we played well for the most part,'' Islanders coach Barry Trotz said. ''We made a poor decision at the end and they capitalized on it.''

With the score tied 1-all and the Islanders on a power play, Jordan Eberle hit the crossbar 4:08 into the third period.

Seconds later, DeAngelo came out of the penalty box, grabbed a loose puck and skated up the left side on a 2-on-1 rush. DeAngelo beat Varlamov high to the blocker side for his 12th goal, giving the Rangers a 2-1 lead at 4:16.

The teams were skating 4-on-4 when Beauvillier tied it with 7:20 left. He fired the puck off the end boards, chased down a lively rebound and backhanded it past Georgiev for his 12th.

After getting outplayed in the opening period, the Rangers turned it around and outshot the Islanders 12-5 in the second, holding them without a shot on goal for more than 14 minutes to start the period.

''A little like a roller-coaster,'' said Georgiev, who made 21 saves in the first period. ''I got warm in the first period and then when we were playing great hockey in the second, I just knew that whenever they had the chance I had to stay sharp.''

With the Rangers on their third power play, DeAngelo's shot was stopped by Varlamov and knocked up in the air before it fell to the ice behind him. Ryan Pulock swooped in and attempted to keep the puck out of the net, with Zibanejad coming in from the left side and whacking at it.

Play continued for more than a minute until a stoppage. A review then determined Zibanejad did knock the puck across the plane of the goal line with 7:14 left in the second, tying the score with his 18th.

The Islanders' Leo Komarov hit the right post with 1:19 remaining in the second.

The Islanders outshot the Rangers 22-6 in the first, including a 16-1 margin over the final 10 1/2 minutes.

''We knew they were going to come out hard in the first period and they put the heat on us and got up 1-0,'' Quinn said. ''Really thought we got back to the way we're playing in the second period. Our special teams were huge, we got two power-play goals, our penalty-kill was immense.''

Late in the first, Tom Kuhnhackl chased the puck into the right corner, took it away from Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba and passed in front to Ross Johnston. He sent it to Bailey at the top of the right circle and the veteran forward fired it past Georgiev for his 10th goal with 51 seconds remaining.

NOTES: Islanders forward Casey Cizikas returned after a two-game absence due to a sore groin. He was hit by a puck last Saturday night against Boston. ... The Islanders finished 0 for 5 on the power play and are 1 for 22 over their last 12 games. ... The Rangers were back at Nassau Coliseum for the first time since a 2-1 victory on March 10, 2015. The Islanders began playing home games at Barclays Center the following season and won seven of the eight meetings in Brooklyn the last four years. ... The teams play again Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden and Feb. 25 back at Nassau Coliseum. ... Rangers forward Artemi Panarin had an assist to give him 17 assists and 23 points in his last 10 games. ... The Rangers improved to 10-3-0 against the Metropolitan Division. ... Zibanejad has six goals and five assists in his last 10 games.

Bjorkstrand scores twice, rallies Jackets over Rangers 2-1

AP

NEW YORK (AP) The surging Columbus Blue Jackets received a dose of stellar play from a rookie goaltender and a two-goal boost from returning Oliver Bjorkstrand to forge another close victory.

Bjorkstrand scored twice, including with 26.5 seconds left, to lift the Blue Jackets over the New York Rangers 2-1 Sunday night for their fifth straight win.

Bjorkstrand came back after missing 13 games with an oblique injury. He tied it 6:08 into the third period, then put the winner past goalie Igor Shesterkin for his 14th goal of the season, finishing a 3-on-2 break with assists credited to Pierre-Luc Dubois and Seth Jones.

''It's nice to get a few goals, a big one for us,'' the 24-year-old Bjorkstrand said. ''It was a game of patience where we just found a way to win it.''

Columbus rookie Matiss Kivlenieks made his first NHL start and stopped 31 shots. The surging Blue Jackets are 15-2-4 since Dec. 9 and 8-1-3 in their last 12 road games.

''We were as calm as we could be,'' Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said. ''Our goalie made key saves and our team had a lot of energy. We're just trying to ride this wave.''

Rangers defenseman Brady Skjei opened the scoring at 18:23 of the first period, eight seconds after his high-sticking penalty - the only infraction called during the game - had expired. A long pass from fellow defenseman Jacob Trouba went past Skjei's outstretched stick, but he managed to scoop up the ricochet off the boards and beat Kivlenieks for his seventh goal. Trouba had the only assist.

The 23-year-old Kivlenieks, from Riga, Latvia, was making his debut after fellow Latvian goalie Elvis Merzlikins blanked the New Jersey Devils 5-0 in Columbus on Saturday. Kivlenieks became the fifth Latvian goaltender to play in the NHL.

''I was a little nervous. I was trying to treat it like any other hockey game,'' Kivlenieks said. ''All that matters is that we got two points. I'm really happy about it.''

The Rangers were coming off two straight wins over the Islanders, 3-2 at Nassau Coliseum on Thursday and a 6-2 drubbing Madison Square Garden on Monday. This performance against another division rival proved frustrating, leaving coach David Quinn vexed as his young club tries to stay in the playoff race.

''We pretty much got what we deserved when the night ended,'' Quinn said.

Kivlenieks, who was 7-7-2 with AHL Cleveland this season, played a strong second period. He denied Tony DeAngelo and Brendan Smith on point-blank chances in front. He also kept former Blue Jacket Artemi Panarin - who leads the Rangers with 68 points in his first season since leaving Columbus as a free agent - from getting on the scoresheet.

''Honestly I still can't believe it happened. It's always been a dream'' a beaming Kivlenieks added after making 14 saves in the third period. ''The guys played really great in front of me.''

With the win, the Blue Jackets moved within one point of the third-place Islanders in the Metropolitan Division, remarkable considering where they were in the standings just over a month ago.

''We're just taking it day by day and game by game,'' said Jones, who leads Columbus with 22 assists. ''We're playing with confidence.''

Shesterkin made 29 saves in his third career start. He won his previous two against Colorado and New Jersey, both at home, earlier this month.

NOTES: The Rangers scratched Fs Phillip DiGiuseppe and Micheal Haley and G Alexandar Georgiev. ... The Blue Jackets scratched F Sonny Milano, D Adam Clendening and injured G Joonas Korpisalo. ... The teams meet again Feb. 14 in Columbus and March 24 in New York. ... The Rangers are the only team with eight players age 21 or younger to appear in at least one game this season. ... Rangers defensemen have 133 points (38 goals, 95 assists) this season, the most goals and points by defensemen on any team.

After taking the first two games of the season series, the New York Rangers were defeated 4-2 by the New York Islanders at Madison Square Garden. Despite the score saying otherwise, the Rangers were the much better team offensively as they out shot the Islanders 42-18. A couple of bad bounces off of their own players and terrible puck luck in the offensive zone led to some unfortunate results. Alexandar Georgiev had a relatively light night in terms of shots against, but the Islanders took full advantage of the limited opportunities they had.

1st Period

Josh Bailey (11) PPG - Noah Dobson (4) & Derick Brassard (16) - 13:35 1st Period

The Islanders were only able to generate eight total shots on goal in the first period, but they were able to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Josh Bailey picked up the first goal of the game on the power play, and deflected the puck past Alexandar Georgiev. Unfortunately for the Rangers, the initial rebound chance wound up banking off of Ryan Lindgren’s skate and into the back of the net.

Anthony Beauvillier (13) - Mathew Barzal (24) & Josh Bailey (18) - 16:35 1st Period

Exactly three minutes after the opening goal, Anthony Beauvillier notched his 13th of the season with the Islanders’ second power play goal of the night. The Islanders were able to catch the Rangers collapsing down low while puck watching, and Beauvillier was able to slip into the high slot undetected. Mathew Barzal set him up with a great spinning pass, and Beauvillier wired a shot under the crossbar to make it 2-0 Islanders.

2nd Period

Anders Lee (16) - Mathew Barzal (25) & Jordan Eberle (17) - 9:52 2nd Period

Things went from bad to worse for the Rangers in the second period, and another fortunate bounce wound up in the back of their own net. Following chaos behind Georgiev’s net, Mathew Barzal was able to escape with the loose puck and found Anders Lee camped out in the left faceoff circle. Lee let go a quick one-timer that hit Ryan Lindgren’s foot yet again, and deflected under Georgiev’s right arm.

3rd Period

Brock Nelson (20) - Josh Bailey (19) & Ryan Pulock (18) - 3:13 3rd Period

A late goal reversal due to an offsides challenge took all of the wind out of the Rangers’ sail, and the Islanders were able to capitalize yet again early in the third period. After receiving a quick pass from Ryan Pulock, Josh Bailey was able to thread an incredible pass through traffic and put the puck right in Brock Nelson’s tape. Nelson was able to tap the puck home for his 20th of the season, and gave the Islanders a commanding four-goal lead.

Pavel Buchnevich (8) PPG - Adam Fox (21) & Mika Zibanejad (20) - 13:45 3rd Period

The Rangers were able to give the building some life late in the third period as they capitalized on an undisciplined spearing penalty on Scott Mayfield. Pavel Buchnevich was able to break the shutout for Thomas Greiss, and pulled the Rangers back within three goals at the 13:45 mark. The goal ended an extremely lengthy string of bad luck for Buchnevich and he was finally able to get back into the goal column.

Chris Kreider (17) PPG - Mika Zibanejad (21) & Ryan Strome (31) - 15:32 3rd Period

A little under two minutes later, Chris Kreider made things interesting as he picked up his first of the night on the back end of the double minor. Kreider was able to jump on the rebound generated by Mika Zibanejad’s point shot, and shoveled the puck past Greiss to bring the Rangers back within a pair of goals.

Unfortunately for the Rangers, that would be as close as they would come to coming back in this game, as the Islanders locked things down during the closing minutes. The shot totals speak for themselves, and the Rangers just didn’t have enough puck. Not having Artemi Panarin certainly didn’t help the Rangers either as they were without their leading scorer for the first time this season. Following tonight’s tough loss at home, the Rangers will head into the All-Star break, followed by their bye week. The Blueshirts will return to action next Friday when they welcome the Detroit Red Wings to Madison Square Garden.

Rangers roll to 4-2 win over Red Wings in return from break

AP

NEW YORK (AP) Mika Zibanejad had a goal and two assists, and Artemi Panarin and Chris Kreider each added a goal and an assist to help the New York Rangers return from an extended break and beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 Friday night.

Pavel Buchnevich also scored to start the Rangers' three-goal second period, and rookie Igor Shesterkin stopped 23 shots. New York was off since a 4-2 loss to the Islanders on Jan. 21, getting time off for the All-Star break and subsequent bye week.

''We did a good job in the second of controlling the game. We got the goals. It was a good win,'' said Zibanejad, who reached the 200-point mark as a Ranger. ''We know what's ahead of us. We're excited about it.''

Robby Fabbri had a goal and an assist and Valtteri Filppula also scored in the third period for the Red Wings, who lost their seventh straight (0-6-1). Detroit, playing for the first time since Jan. 22 for its extended break, has only 12 wins in 52 games.

Jimmy Howard finished with 35 saves for the Red Wings to fall to 0-15-2 over his last 17 games since his last win on Oct. 29. He is 2-20-2 on the season.

The teams meet again on Saturday night in Detroit.

''They played really well. They worked us in the offensive as a five-man unit,'' Howard said. ''We have a unique opportunity to go at them tomorrow night. We have to show them better.''

After a scoreless first period in which Howard made 15 saves, Buchnevich broke through at 9:23 of the second, converting a slick cross-ice pass from Zibanejad for his ninth.

Kreider, who also had an assist on Buchnevich's score, made it 2-0 at 11:56 tipping Adam Fox's shot past Howard for his 18th. Kreider has three goals in his last four games while Zibanejad, who also had an assist on the second goal, has multi-point efforts in three of his last four games and five of his last eight contests.

''Buchie did a really good job tonight and Kreids had a good night as well,'' Rangers coach David Quinn said, referring to the strong play of his top line which also includes Zibanejad.

Panarin increased the margin to 3-0 with his team-leading 27th goal at 19:18, his fifth goal in his last seven games. Panarin has points in 37 of the 48 games he has played this season, including 23 of the Rangers' 24 wins.

Panarin missed the Rangers' last game before the break and then last weekend's All-Star Game in St. Louis with an upper-body injury. He leads the Rangers with 70 points, fifth-best in the league.

Zibanejad increased the lead to 4-0 with his 19th at 5:02 of the third.

Fabbri got the Red Wings on the scoreboard with his 12th at 5:59 of the third. Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin assisted on the goal for his 250th career point.

Filppula, playing his 999th career game, scored for Detroit at 10:59, his fourth of the season.

The 24-year-old Shesterkin was making his fourth start for the Rangers this month. He now has recorded wins in three as the Rangers improved to 6-2-0 in last eight home games. The Rangers have also allowed two goals or fewer in four of their last five games and they are 17-3-0 this season permitting two or fewer goals.

''The team really helped me,'' Shesterkin said through an interpreter. ''There were a lot of blocked shots today.''

Shesterkin also seemed to have his sights on a possible empty-net goal as the final seconds ticked off with Howard pulled for an extra skater.

''He was going for it. He might have just run out of time,'' Rangers defenseman Marc Staal said. ''Two-goal lead with 10 seconds left, you've got to go for it.''
