Rangers end road trip with 3-2 win over Ducks in shootout

STATS/AP

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) The Rangers are getting into a bad habit of allowing goals in the final minute of regulation. Fortunately for them, it hasn't cost them the last two times.

New York gave up a late goal for the third straight game - this time to Rickard Rakell with 25.3 seconds remaining - but was able to beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 in a shootout Thursday night.

It was the second shootout victory in three days for the Rangers.

Their struggles in the last minute began Sunday at Los Angeles when they were unable to clear the puck and Alec Martinez scored with 55 seconds left to hand New York a 4-3 loss. Two nights later in San Jose, the Sharks' Tomas Hertl tied the game at 3 with less than two seconds remaining, but the Rangers were able to win in a shootout.

''It's a little demoralizing to be giving up goals in the final minute of games, but we keep making progress,'' rookie coach David Quinn said. ''Over a season you have to find ways to manage to get points when you are not playing great or feeling great. We did that tonight.''

Mats Zuccarello and Mika Zibanejad scored in the shootout for the Rangers, who went 2-2 on a four-game road swing. Alexandar Georgiev made 22 saves and turned away both Ducks attempts in the tiebreaker.

Brett Howden and Kevin Hayes scored in regulation for the Rangers, who improved to 3-0 in shootouts.

''Those are huge points. You look at the end of the year and if you have 13 or 14 losses in an overtime shootout, those are points you are giving up,'' said Marc Staal, who had an assist.

Jakob Silfverberg also scored for Anaheim, which is 0-5-2 in its last seven games. John Gibson made 28 saves. The Ducks are 1-2 in shootouts.

''That was the best game we've played defensively in a long time. Now it's a matter of getting the offense clicking and spending more time in the offensive zone,'' Silfverberg said. ''We didn't get the result we wanted tonight, but we got a point.''

The Rangers led most of the way but Rakell tied it with 25.3 seconds remaining in the third period after the Ducks pulled Gibson for an extra skater.

It marked the 13th time in franchise history that Anaheim has tied a game in the final 30 seconds.

Rakell, who has three goals this season, also had an assist. He has seven points in his last eight games (two goals, five assists).

New York got on the board first when Hayes scored a power-play goal less than two minutes into the second. Ryan Kesler blocked Howden's shot but Hayes was able to corral the deflection and fire it past Gibson for his third of the season.

Anaheim tied it with its second power-play goal in its last six chances when Silfverberg scored on the rebound of a shot by Rakell that went off Georgiev's blocker. It was Silfverberg's fourth of the season, which tied him with Pontus Aberg for the team lead.

Less than two minutes later, Howden was wide open in front and scored his third goal off a pass from Jimmy Vesey. The goal was set up when Staal had the puck near the blue line and found Vesey near the left faceoff circle in the Ducks zone.

Ryan Getzlaf had two assists for Anaheim to extend his point streak to four games. He has two goals and five assists during that span.

NOTES: Anaheim right wing Patrick Eaves played for the first time this year following a health scare that cost him much of last season, when he played in only two games. He missed the first three games because of a lower-body injury and then the final 77 due to post-viral syndrome and a shoulder injury. He sat out the first 13 games this season as he was working his way back from shoulder surgery in early March. Eaves skated on the third line. ... The Rangers have a power-play goal in five of their last eight games.

Lundqvist, Vesey lead Rangers to 3-1 win over Sabres

NEW YORK (AP) Henrik Lundqvist was in vintage form in helping the New York Rangers get a big win.

Lundqvist stopped 39 shots and Jimmy Vesey scored twice to lead New York to its third straight victory, 3-1 over the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night.

''Hank was outstanding tonight,'' Rangers coach David Quinn said. ''We managed a way to get it done. I thought the third period we did a pretty good job of managing the puck and getting it behind them.''

Neal Pionk also scored for New York, and rookie Brett Howden picked up his sixth assist of the season before leaving with an injury in the second period.

''I think we earned this type of game,'' Lundqvist said. ''Then in the third, I think we played our best period. Tonight, we made some really strong plays at the right time.''

Lundqvist was stellar while picking up his fourth win of the season and 435th of his career, moving just two behind Jacaues Plante for seventh place on the NHL's all-time list.

Conor Sheary scored for Buffalo and Carter Hutton made 19 saves.

The Rangers made the most of their first two shots in the middle period, scoring twice within 19 seconds.

''We capitalized on a few chances we had and that was the difference in the game,'' Vesey said.

Pionk scored 41 seconds into the period when his wrist shot sailed past Hutton. Vladislav Namestnikov and Mika Zibanejad assisted on the play. On the Rangers' next shot, Vesey snapped off a wrist shot from the slot to make it 2-0. Howden made a nifty drop pass to set up his linemate.

Howden crashed hard into the boards later in the second before being helped off the ice with about 6 1/2 minutes remaining. He did not return.

Lundqvist appeared to be injured late in the second when Rasmus Dahlin, the first overall pick in June's NHL draft, collided with his Swedish countrymate. However, after an extended look from the trainer, Lundqvist remained in the game.

Sheary took advantage of a turnover by Brendan Smith to pull the Sabres within one as he scored off his own rebound at 6:07 of the third.

''I really liked the way we played from start to finish,'' Sabres coach Phil Housley said. ''We would like to take two or three shifts back in the second period. ... It's just important in those situations when it's a tight hockey game you can't take a shift off. You can't let your guard down and they capitalized on some soft coverage. It's a good lesson to be learned.''

The Rangers had allowed a tying or go-ahead goal in the final minute of their previous three games on the west coast trip but managed to win the last two with the help of a shootout. Sunday, Vesey tallied an empty-netter to seal the deal.

Buffalo finished 0 for 4 on the power play, and New York was 0 for 1.

The Sabres' top line of Jeff Skinner, Jack Eichel and Jason Pominville has been one of the best trio's in the NHL since being put together. After combining for 38 points in the previous seven games, they were held scoreless by the Rangers.

NOTES: F Pavel Buchnevich returned to the Rangers' lineup after being a healthy scratch for the second time this season. ... F Chris Kreider skated in his 395th career NHL game. ... Rangers F Ryan Spooner missed the game due to a lower-body injury. D Adam McQuaid has missed three straight games and is now considered week-to-week not day-to-day. ... The New York Rangers have recalled Lias Andersson from the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Andersson has appeared in 14 games with the Pack this season, and has scored four goals and added eight assists for 12 points. Last year he spent 25 games in Hartford and finished with five goals and nine assists for 14 points. According to Prospect-Stats, nine of his points have been primary as opposed to the seven he recorded last season.

The above is a long roundabout way of saying that his production thus far is a vast improvement given the amount of games played, and he’s coming along as expected. With Andersson back in New York, it will be interesting to see how David Quinn deploys him.

The Rangers have been running Mika Zibanejad, Kevin Hayes, Brett Howden and Filip Chytilprimarily down the middle.

Howden left Sunday’s game vs. the Buffalo Sabres with an injury, but on Monday he said he felt good and was taking things day to day, so this move likely doesn’t impact him too much in the interim.

Pionk, Zibanejad rally Rangers to 5-3 win over Canadiens

?
STATS/AP

NEW YORK (AP) Neal Pionk couldn't ever remember scoring on an end-to-end rush before.

The 23-year-old defenseman got the tiebreaking goal on a sensational individual effort late in the third period, and the New York Rangers rallied to beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-3 Tuesday night for their fourth straight victory.

''That was a good one,'' Pionk said.

He brought the puck from behind the Rangers net, spun around one Montreal player, skated up the left side, cut in toward the front of the Canadiens net and put it past goalie Carey Price while falling to the ice with 2:44 left.

''I couldn't believe it,'' teammate Mika Zibanejad said. ''I told him he doesn't need us out there. He's such a good skater, it's incredible to see.''

Zibanejad and Chris Kreider each had a goal and an assist, Tony DeAngeloand Pavel Buchnevich also scored, and Kevin Hayes had three assists for the Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves.

New York trailed 3-1 early in the second period before scoring the last four goals - three in the third.

''Real gutsy win,'' Zibanejad said. ''We weren't real happy going into the third but felt we had a little bit of momentum and we just wanted to keep that going. We did a lot of good things, and a good feeling to win.''

Zibanejad capped the scoring after he brought the puck up the left side and tried to send a pass across in front. The puck defected back to him off Jeff Petry's skate and Zibanejad put it past Price with 1:48 to go.

Tomas Tatar had two goals and Max Domi also scored for Montreal, which was 7-3-1 in its last 11 games - including a shootout win across town against the Islanders the previous night. Brendan Gallagher and Petry each had two assists, and Price stopped 27 shots.

''We made a lot of mistakes,'' Canadiens coach Claude Julien said. ''As a group, we weren't very good. We couldn't have been that tired. We had a 3-1 lead. This happens to every team.''

The Rangers began their comeback late in the middle period. Just after New York's power play expired, DeAngelo tipped a shot by Hayes for his second goal with 2:15 left to make it 3-2.

''I thought that gave us a little bit of a lift,'' Rangers coach David Quinn said. ''To play the way we did in the third ... it makes you feel pretty good.''

New York tied the score near midway through the third. Hayes brought the puck down the right side and passed to his left to Marc Staal, who fired a shot that Price knocked down with his glove. With the puck laying on the ice, Buchnevich skated in and put it in before Price could smother it at 8:25.

The teams combined for 44 minutes of penalties, including a 10-minute misconduct on the Rangers' Cody McLeod in the second period. Montreal finished 1 for 7 on the power play, and New York was 0 for 6.

With the score tied 1-all after one period, Tatar put the Canadiens back ahead with his fifth of the season and second of the game as he tipped a pass from Philip Danault through the legs of a sprawled Lundqvist at 4:40.

Montreal then made it 3-1 on a power play less than two minutes later. Domi was standing in front when he got a pass from Gallagher from the left side of the goal line and put in a backhand from the right side for his ninth at 6:27.

Tatar got the Canadiens on the scoreboard 23 seconds in as he beat Lundqvist from the left circle on the first shot of the game.

New York tied the score with 4:10 left in the opening period as Kreider got a pass across the crease from Hayes and beat Price from the right side before the goalie could slide back over. It was Kreider's seventh goal, and third in four games.

NOTES: Domi scored against the Rangers for the first time in six career games against them. His goal gave him nine tallies and 13 points in his last 11 games. ... Tatar had his second two-goal game of the season. He also scored twice as part of a three-point game against Pittsburgh on Oct. 13. ... The teams play two more times this season, at Montreal on Dec. 1 and back in New York on March 1. ... Lundqvist is one win behind Jacques Plante (437) for seventh place on the NHL's career list. ... Kreider has five goals and three assists in his last 10 games. ... Pionk has two goals and eight points in his last nine games.

Red Wings rally past Rangers 3-2 in OT

DETROIT (AP) There was time for one more good chance in overtime before the clock would run out. Andreas Athanasiou took the puck near the blue line, skated in and backhanded it toward the front of the goal, where Dylan Larkin was open.

''I saw the lane to the net,'' Larkin said. ''I knew he was going to get it to me, so I just tried to put myself on the far side of the net.''

Larkin scored with 5.1 seconds remaining in overtime, capping an impressive late comeback by the Detroit Red Wings in a 3-2 victory over the New YorkRangers on Friday night. Athanasiou tied the game with 2:02 remaining in the third period, then made the pass to Larkin, who redirected the puck past Henrik Lundqvist for his seventh goal of the season.

''Just took a look at the clock,'' Athanasiou said. ''Got the puck up, (Mike Green) was screaming for me to get it up there. I saw Larks and tried to get it to the net.''

The Rangers led 2-0 after two periods but had their four-game winning streak snapped. Detroit has won five of six after winning just one of its first 10 games.

Kevin Shattenkirk and Neal Pionk scored 40 seconds apart during an extended New York power play late in the second period, but Justin Abdelkader began the Detroit rally with a goal early in the third.

Lundqvist remained a win behind Hall of Famer Jacques Plante for seventh place on the career list.

''This one hurts, because we had everything under control,'' Lundqvist said.

The Rangers scored twice while Detroit's Jacob de la Rose was serving a double-minor for high-sticking. Shattenkirk beat goalie Jimmy Howard with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle. Then, with de la Rose still in the box, Pionk's perimeter shot appeared to deflect off a Detroit player on its way in.

Lundqvist's bid for his first shutout in nearly a year ended with 18:14 left in the third. Gustav Nyquist took the puck from Rangers defenseman Brendan Smith and fed Abdelkader on the doorstep for an easy goal.

''We cheated the game with a 2-0 lead and that's the result,'' Rangers coach David Quinn said. ''I thought we had learned that lesson, but we obviously haven't. You can't do that in this league.''

Athanasiou, back after missing four games with a lower-body injury, tied it toward the end of the third when he sped in from the left wing and backhanded the puck past Lundqvist.

''A lot of speed. I knew I could cut in,'' Athanasiou said. ''Got hooked a little bit, was able to get the puck back and I was able to fake Lundqvist out.''

The Red Wings also trailed 2-0 before rallying to beat Vancouver in a shootout Tuesday.

''We need to play the first period with the same urgency that we have in the third period,'' Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said.

NOTES: Mats Zuccarello (groin strain) missed the game for New York. ... De la Rose left with an upper-body injury. ... With Brett Howden, Lias Anderssonand Filip Chytil, the Rangers had three forwards age 20 or younger in the same regular-season game for the first time since Oct. 13, 1990, when Tie Domi, Troy Mallette and Steven Rice played at Washington. ... It was the 12th time in the last 13 games between Detroit and New York that the game was decided by one goal.

Vesey's shootout goal lifts Rangers over Blue Jackets

?COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) New York gave up twice as many shots as it took, but Jimmy Vesey found the back of the net with the deciding goal in the shootout to get the Rangers another win.

Vesey, who also had the game-tying goal at the end of the second period, beat Joonas Korpisalo on the glove side in the fifth round of the shootout to give the Rangers a 5-4 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night for New York's fifth in the last six games (5-0-1).

Vesey scored in the tiebreaker right after Columbus' Oliver Bjorkstrand was stopped by Alexandar Georgiev, the backup who had started in place of Henrik Lundqvist in the second game of a back-to-back. The Rangers improved to 4-0 in shootouts this season.

''I'm pretty confident when we go into shootouts because our guys are so skilled,'' said Georgiev, who had 34 saves and picked up his third win in four starts this season.

The game remained tied 4-4 through the third period despite an 11-2 shot advantage by Columbus, and a scoreless 5-minute overtime period. The Blue Jackets finished with a 38-19 shot advantage.

Kevin Shattenkirk and Mika Zibanejad also scored in the shootout for New York. Pavel Buchnevich had a goal and an assist in regulation, and Zibanejad and Chris Kreider also scored.

Artemi Panarin and Anthony Duclair tallied in the tiebreaker for Columbus. Pierre-Luc Dubois had a goal and assist for Columbus, and Cam Atkinson, Alexander Wennberg and Nick Foligno also scored in regulation. Seth Joneshad three assists. Korpisalo finished with 15 saves.

Zibanejad scored the opening goal on a touch pass from Buchnevich on a 2-on-1 rush 5:54 into the game. Columbus tied it late in the first when Dubois threaded a pass into Atkinson, who tipped it in for a power-play goal.

Another odd-man rush allowed Buchnevich to beat Korpisalo and give the Rangers the lead in the second period. Kreider tapped in his team-leading eighth goal of the season off a nice pass from Kevin Hayes later in the second to make it 3-1.

Columbus tied the game again in the second with two goals in a 32-second span. Dubois got credit for redirecting a Jones one-timer , and Foligno tipped in the second from the door step on a rush.

Wennberg got his first of the season, a short-handed tally off the post to put the Blue Jackets ahead. But the Columbus lead didn't last long. Vesey capped the scoring in the busy second period to knot the game again at the second intermission.

''You can't overstate how important that (last) goal was,'' New York coach David Quinn said. ''It really reset the game for us and gave us a little bit of a good feeling going into the locker room between the second and third.''

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Blue Jackets, who are 2-0-2 in last four.

''Certainly, the odd-man rushes early on in the game hurt us, and the turnovers, but we played a good game,'' Columbus coach John Tortorella said. ''I don't think they were in our end zone in the third period until the last shift.''

Quinn agreed.

''Give them credit,'' he said. ''They played real hard in the third and made a big push. They had some great chances. (Georgiev) stood tall, and we got two valuable road points.''

NOTES: Columbus has four power-play goals in the last three games. ... Atkinson returned after missing Friday night's game to illness. His seventh goal tied him for the team lead. ... New York F Mats Zuccarello (groin strain) missed his second game. ... Wennberg played in his 300th NHL game. ... Zibanejad has two goals and three assists in the past three games.

Lundqvist ties Plante on NHL wins list, Rangers beat Canucks

NEW YORK (AP) Two of the New York Rangers' younger players helped veteran goalie Henrik Lundqvist get a big milestone win.

Filip Chytil and Brett Howden scored to back Lundqvist's 437th career win as the Rangers beat the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 Monday night. Lundqvist tied Jacques Plante for seventh place on the NHL's all-time list.

''The guy knows how to win hockey games,'' alternate captain Marc Staalsaid of the 36-year-old Lundqvist. ''You have to be an elite competitor and elite goaltender to have that many wins, it's that simple. He is brought that his entire time here.''

The Rangers improved to 6-0-1 in their last seven, getting their longest points streak since an 11-0-2 run Oct. 18 to Nov. 15, 2015.

Lundqvist stopped 25 shots, including two big saves on Vancouver's rookie sensation Elias Pettersson in the closing seconds to preserve the win.

''We have to keep same mindset as when we started the season,'' Lundqvist said. ''A lot of teams in the league in the same boat, will come down to how hard you want to work. It's about being consistent - you can beat any team in the league''

Nikolay Goldobin scored and Jacob Markstrom made 25 saves for the Canucks, who snapped a six-game point streak (4-0-2).

The 19-year-old Chytil tied the score 1-1 with 7:18 left in the second on a rebound from the left side for his first of the season. After earning a spot on the roster out of training camp, he struggled to find the back of the net in the first 18 games. Rangers coach David Quinn said earlier in the day he had not lost faith in the talented teenager and was rewarded for his patience. Chris Kreider and Neal Pionk assisted on the play.

The 20-year Howden got the game-winner with 8:41 left in the third when he snapped a wrist shot past Markstrom. Jimmy Vesey and Jesper Fast assisted on the play. Howden missed one game earlier in November for precautionary reasons after a scary collision with the end boards against Buffalo.

''You can play your young players and win. That's what we have done so far,'' Quinn said after the victory. ''We want to win right now. That was our goal from day one and that is our goal right now.''

It was the first time two players 20-years-old or younger scored for the Rangers since Daniel Goneau and Christian Dube did it in October 1996.

Goldobin gave the Canucks a 1-0 lead at 3:16 of the second. Shortly after exiting the penalty box, Goldobin picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and started an odd-man rush for Vancouver. The Russian winger kept it himself and wired a wrister into the top corner. Tyler Motte and Ben Huttonassisted on the play.

The Canucks thought they doubled their advantage less than a minute later when Michael Del Zotto's shot hit both posts and the cross bar. The referees initially called the play a good goal on the ice but it was later overturned after a video review.

''It's tough right now, but I thought we played a really good road game,'' Markstrom said. ''We created a lot of chances and could've scored a lot of goals. We have to keep working. The good thing with this league is that there's a game tomorrow.''

NOTES: Rangers F Pavel Buchnevich suffered a broken thumb Saturday against the Columbus Blue Jackets and will be sidelined 4-6 weeks. ... Beauvillier scores 3, Islanders hold off Rangers 7-5

?NEW YORK (AP) The first winter storm of the season had Anthony Beauvillierexcited about facing the New York Islanders' cross-town rival, and he broke out of a season-long scoring slump in a big way.

Beauvillier had three goals and an assist, and the Islanders held off the Rangers 7-5 on Thursday night to keep up their recent mastery in the series.

''I was pretty pumped before the game,'' the Quebec native said. ''It was snowing outside, felt like Christmas. And playing the Rangers is always fun. It feels good to get the win.''

Beauvillier, who had one goal in 16 games this season, got his first career hat trick and first four-point game. The Islanders, second in the Metropolitan Division, won for the seventh time in 10 games and remained perfect in seven games against division teams this season.

''It's always tough mentally,'' he said of his struggles. ''If you don't play good and the team's losing it's harder, but the team's been winning and the locker room is great.''

Leo Komarov had a goal and an assist, and Anders Lee, Brock Nelson and Cal Clutterbuck also scored as the Islanders beat the Rangers for the 12th time in 13 meetings since the start of 2015-16 season. Valtteri Filppula had three assists, Nick Leddy added two, and Thomas Greiss stopped 36 shots.

Chris Kreider had two goals and Fredrik Claesson and Filip Chytil also scored for the Rangers, who were 6-0-1 in their last seven. Henrik Lundqvist gave up five goals on 17 shots through the first two periods. Alexandar Georgievreplaced him to start the third and had five saves.

''They had three tap-ins when they were standing next to a guy,'' Rangers coach David Quinn said. ''We didn't pick sticks up. ... They scored way too easily.''

Komarov scored midway through the third to give the Islanders a 6-3 lead after trailing 2-0 less than six minutes into the game.

Kreider's second power-play goal of the night with 6:47 left pulled the Rangers back within two, and Chytil scored with 2 1/2 minutes remaining to make it 6-5.

The Rangers pulled Georgiev for an extra skater with a little more than two minutes remaining but couldn't get the equalizer. Clutterbuck sealed the win with an empty-netter with 21 seconds left.

''These division games are huge,'' Lee said. ''Anytime we can get two and keep them to zero is huge.''

Beauvillier put the Islanders ahead 3-2 with his second of the night when he skated in on a breakaway and beat Lundqvist at 2:24 of the second period.

However, the Rangers tied it with a short-handed goal 57 seconds later as Hayes beat Greiss from the left circle with his fourth. It was the first short-handed goal allowed by the Islanders this season.

Beauvillier put the Islanders back ahead for good when he deflected Johnny Boychuk's shot past Lundqvist on a power play at 5:13.

The Islanders, 2 for 24 on the power play in their previous six games, got their second of the night with the man advantage. Lee deflected Leddy's point shot down past Lundqvist for his sixth with just under six minutes left in the middle period to push the lead to 5-3.

The New York Rangers acquired forward Ryan Strome from the Edmonton Oilers on Friday in exchange for forward Ryan Spooner.

Strome, 25, had two points (one goal, one assist) in 18 games for the Oilers this season. Overall, he has 162 points (59 goals, 103 assists) in 358 games with the New York Islanders (2013-17) and Oilers.

Spooner, 26, had two points (one goal, one assist) in 16 games for the Rangers. He has 160 points (46 goals, 114 assists) in 289 career games with the Boston Bruins (2012-18) and Rangers.

The Rangers are hoping Strome can reach his potential with them. Strome was the fifth overall pick of the 2011 draft by the Islanders.

"I think he brings a little bit of everything," New York general manager Jeff Gorton said in a statement, "and with our group right now, having somebody who can play in all different areas of the game, I think he can help us.

"When you're a top-five pick overall there's a lot of pressure on you to perform. ... I think he feels like, and we feel like, maybe there's a little bit more that he can still get to the level we're all hoping he can get to."

Strome's best season was when he scored 50 points (17 goals, 33 assists) for the Islanders in 2014-15, his second season in the league.

Spooner was a second-round pick in the 2010 draft. He was acquired from Boston last February.

Spooner's top campaign was 2015-16 when he tallied 49 points (13 goals, 36 assists) for the Bruins.

Lundqvist helps Rangers beat Panthers 4-2

?NEW YORK (AP)

Even Henrik Lundqvist was impressed with his company.

Lundqvist passed Jacques Plante for seventh on NHL goaltender wins list with his 438th victory, and the New York Rangers beat the Florida Panthers4-2 on Saturday night for their fifth consecutive home win.

''To look at that list there are some really good goalies who played a huge part in the history of the game,'' said Lundqvist, who had 39 saves. ''It means a lot to me but as a goalie it also means you've been part of some really good teams.''

Chris Kreider had a goal and two assists for New York, which has won three of four overall. Vladislav Namestnikov, Brendan Smith and Filip Chytil also scored.

Namestnikov gave the Rangers a 3-2 lead with his second of the season 2:37 into the middle period. The goal was disputed by the Panthers, but officials ruled the puck crossed the line behind Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo.

''That controversial call, obviously, I think that affected the game,'' Florida coach Bob Boughner said. ''Confused, I still don't understand. I think it should have been 2-2 going into the third.''

Kreider helped put it away with a power-play score 7:49 into the third. Lundqvist picked up an assist on Kreider's team-leading 11th goal.

The 36-year-old Lundqvist is 7-6-2 this season. The stylish Swede is the only goaltender in league history with 20 wins in 13 straight seasons.

''He did what he has been doing all year for us,'' Rangers coach David Quinn said. ''He's an elite goaltender.''

Mike Hoffman had a goal and an assist for Florida, which dropped to 1-2 on a six-game trip. Aaron Ekblad also scored, and Luongo made 20 saves.

The 39-year-old Luongo is the only active goaltender with more wins than Lundqvist with 475. But he placed much of the blame for the loss on himself.

''Obviously I'm not happy with the first couple of goals I let in,'' he said. ''I have to be better than that. It's on me to bail them out when there's mistakes made but that's how hockey goes.''

The Rangers bounced back nicely after a 7-5 loss to the Islanders in Brooklyn on Thursday, defeating the Panthers for the second time this season. New York started its current home winning streak with a 5-2 victory against Florida on Oct. 23.

Since the start of the 2013-14 season, the Rangers are 12-2-3 against the Panthers. Lundqvist is 18-5-2 against Florida since November 2009.

Chytil opened the scoring at 3:03 of the first with his third goal in three games. The 19-year-old forward went without a goal in his first 17 games this season.

''I'm focused on every shift, this is my game,'' said Chytil, who played on a line centered by Kevin Hayes with Krieder on left wing. ''I feel great out there.''

Hoffman tied it with a laser shot past Lundqvist at 4:40, extending his team-record point streak to 15 games. Hoffman has eight goals and nine assists during his streak.

Ekblad then put the Panthers in front at 10:11 with a one-timer past Lundqvist for his third goal of the season.

New York tied it 11:49 into the first when Smith, a healthy scratch by Quinn the previous three games, scored his second of the season. The defenseman found space between Luongo and his right post.

''I was fortunate to put that one past Luongo,'' Smith said. ''It was a good thing to get that one. We got timely goals.''

Chytil scores again, Rangers beat Stars 2-1

STATS/AP

NEW YORK (AP) Filip Chytil is having quite the scoring run, and the New York Rangers could not be happier.

Chytil scored the tiebreaking goal 4:32 into the third period to rally the New York Rangers to a 2-1 win over the Dallas Stars on Monday night. The 21st overall pick in the 2017 NHL draft, Chytil scored for the fourth straight game to become the first teenager in franchise history to accomplish that feat.

''I am happy we are winning and I can help the team with goals,'' Chytil said. ''I am trying to play hard and play my game.''

Jimmy Vesey also scored and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 16 shots to help the Rangers win their sixth straight at home. New York has also won eight of its last 10 overall (8-1-1).

The Rangers trailed 1-0 before Vesey tied it with his seventh about 9 1/2 minutes into the second as he twisted his body around Dallas' Roman Polakbefore backhanding a loose puck past goalie Ben Bishop while falling to the ice.

''Hard work feels good,'' New York coach David Quinn said. ''It feels good. And so these guys have put a lot into it and when you get rewarded with the wins, you really have that feeling. And that's kind of the (feeling) we have right now.''

Tyler Seguin scored early in the second period to give Dallas the lead. Bishop made 12 saves before leaving after two periods due to a lower body injury. Anton Khudobin stopped nine of the 10 shots he faced in the third.

The Stars snapped a two-game win streak and fell to 3-3-2 in their last eight.

Chytil put the Rangers ahead with a snap shot from the top of the left circle. Before shooting, he cut behind Stars defenseman Joel Hanley, in effect using him as a screen.

''It's not an excuse but for me it was a little tough because maybe I wasn't warm enough,'' Khudobin said. ''At the same time, he went back-forth, back-forth and I was kind of thinking he might go to the middle but he stayed on the (left) side and snuck (one) right by me.''

Lundqvist kept the game even, and made a spectacular glove save on Stars rookie defenseman Miro Heiskanen's shot from the slot with 1:05 left in the second.

''I am relying on my reads-back to the way I played waiting for the puck (and) reading the shot,'' said Lundqvist, who faced a 6 on 5 in the final 2:17. He only had to make one save-on an Alex Radulov wrist shot--while benefitting from two Fredrik Claesson blocked shots, and one each from Marc Staal and Jesper Fast.

''I feel comfortable,'' Lundqvist said.

Dallas took a 1-0 lead on Seguin's power play goal 2:17 into the second. The Stars' center ripped a laser from the left faceoff dot to open the scoring. It was Seguin's seventh goal of the season, including the second on the power play, and came 44 seconds after Bishop's right pad save on Brett Howden's short-handed attempt.

Dallas finished the game 1 for 4 on the power play, while holding New York to 0 for 2.

''The power play was poor,'' Stars coach Jim Montgomery said.

NOTES: One day after being called up, RW Steven Fogarty dressed and played on New York's fourth line. The game was his first of the season, and his second career NHL game. In 19 games with AHL Hartford this season, Fogarty had seven goals and seven assists. ... New York D Brady Skjei was scratched for the second straight game. ... Rangers RW Mats Zuccarellomissed his second straight due to an undisclosed injury. ... During his pregame availability, Montgomery acknowledged he had discussions with New York about its coaching vacancy after the Rangers fired Alain Vigneault. ''We did have some conversations,'' Montgomery said. ''(Dallas GM) Jim Nill (was) very aggressive in his pursuit of me, and the lifestyle in Dallas was a lot more similar for my family to Denver.'' Prior to being hired by the Stars on May 4, Montgomery was the coach at the University of Denver for five seasons where he compiled a 125-57-26 record and won the national championship in 2017. New York eventually hired Quinn from BostonUniversity on May 13. ... Dallas scratched D Ben Gleason, RW Brett Ritchieand C Devin Shore. ... The teams will meet once more this season, March 5 in Dallas. ... New York Knicks G/F Tim Hardaway Jr. was among the announced 17,071 in attendance.

Georgiev gets 1st shutout as Rangers beat Islanders 5-0

?

NEW YORK (AP) When Alexandar Georgiev was young, his family moved from Bulgaria to Russia so he could have a better opportunity to play sports. He was happy his parents were in attendance Wednesday night to see his first NHL shutout.

Georgiev stopped 29 shots, Filip Chytil scored for the fifth straight game, and the New York Rangers beat the crosstown-rival Islanders 5-0.

''They did everything they could to help me along the way, so I'm very thankful for them,'' the 22-year-old Georgiev said. ''It's a special moment that they were here to see my first shutout.''

Chris Kreider had a goal and an assist, and Cody McLeod, Neal Pionk and Kevin Hayes also scored to help the Rangers win for the ninth time in 11 games (9-1-1). Kevin Shattenkirk and Mika Zibanejad each added two assists in the Rangers' seventh straight win at home, now by a combined 26-10 margin.

Georgiev, 7-6-1 in 15 career games coming in, made several nice stops, including 13 saves in the third period while winning his fourth straight start.

The Rangers ended an eight-game skid (0-7-1) to the Islanders, who had won 12 of the previous 13 meetings, including a 7-5 win at home last Thursday night. The shutout was the Rangers' first in the series since a 1-0 overtime win at the Nassau Coliseum on April 13, 2013.

''When you lose so often to someone you're going to win one eventually,'' Rangers first-year coach David Quinn said. ''I think the odds were just in our favor. ... That's a really good hockey team. We were opportunistic tonight for sure.''

Robin Lehner finished with 22 saves for the Islanders, who trailed 3-0 a little more than eight minutes into the game and lost for the fifth time in their last seven games (2-4-1). They also lost to a Metropolitan Division opponent for the first time after starting the season 7-0-0.

''They got out early and we were chasing all night,'' the Islanders' Mathew Barzal said. ''We just have to have a better start. We had a lot of Grade A chances, their goalie made some big saves.''

Kreider beat Lehner from the left circle on a rush with 3:41 left for his team-leading 12th to cap the scoring.

Neither team could muster anything for most of the second period until Hayes added to the Rangers' advantage, beating Lehner in front with a backhand for his fifth with 2:43 left.

Both teams finished with five shots on goal in the middle period. The Islanders had seven shots go wide, and the Rangers had one.

Chytil extended his streak and got the Rangers started in the opening minute of the game. On a 2-on-1 rush with Kreider, he was skating up the right side and tried to send a pass across the front of the goal to his teammate, but the puck deflected off Islanders defenseman Ryan Pulockback to Chytil and he beat Lehner 29 seconds in.

''When you're hot, you're hot,'' Hayes said of the 19-year-old Chytil. He's been playing well. ... It's impressive. It's a tough league to score goals in and he's doing it at will right now.''

McLeod doubled the lead at 3:30 as he deflected Tony DeAngelo's long shot from the right point out of the air with his stick past Lehner.

The Rangers also led 2-0 less than six minutes in last week in Brooklyn before the Islanders tied it with two goals late in the opening period and went on to another win. There was no comeback this time.

''They've had our number, no doubt,'' Shattenkirk said. ''That's huge for us as a confidence-builder going forward and just getting over that hump.''

Pionk made it 3-0 on the power play at 8:04, firing a one-timer from center point that beat a screened Lehner on the blocker side for his fourth. It gave Pionk five points (one goal, four assists) in his last five games.

NOTES: Islanders F Matt Martin missed his eighth straight game due to an upper-body injury. ... Barzal ended a five-game points streak, in which he had a goal and five assists. ... The teams meet again twice - Jan. 10 at Madison Square Garden, and Jan. 12 in Brooklyn's Barclays Center. ... D Brady Skjei was back in the Rangers' lineup after sitting out the previous two games. Couturier, Konecny lead Flyers over Rangers 4-0

  • PHILADELPHIA (AP) The Flyers got the type of consistent performance they had been missing of late.

Sean Couturier scored a pair of goals, Calvin Pickard made 31 saves in his fourth career shutout and Philadelphia beat the New York Rangers 4-0 Friday to stop a four-game losing streak.

Travis Konecny had a goal, two assists and got into fight, Jordan Weal scored an empty-net goal and Claude Giroux had three assists for Philadelphia, which entered tied for last in the Metropolitan conference. The Flyers scored three goals in the final five minutes, 21 seconds.

''There weren't many guys below the bar; there were none, to be honest with you,'' coach Dave Hakstol said. ''We played a real good 60-minute game. Everybody went out and did their job, from the goaltender on out.''

Pickard, among four Flyers goaltenders this season, was in net because starter Brian Elliott and backup Michal Neuvirth are sidelined with lower body injuries. Pickard has made 10 appearances and has a 4-1-2 record.

''It was great for everybody,'' Pickard said. ''After the last few games, we really keyed in on this one and we wanted to have a good effort start to finish. I thought we did that.''

New York, which entered tied for the Metropolitan lead, lost for just the third time in 12 games. The Rangers entered with three wins a row.

Pickard made his best save with 5:56 left, a pad stop on Lias Andersson to preserve a one-goal lead.

''I wanted to stay patient,'' Pickard said. ''He's a pretty skilled guy, so you had to figure he was going to make a move. I just stayed with him and battled after that.''

Couturier scored 35 seconds later with a wrist shot from the slot, sending the puck under Henrik Lundqvist's right arm after a pass from Konecny. After Weal's goal, Couturier scored on a rebound with 1:37 remaining.

Philadelphia had a season-high 46 shots against the 36-year-old Lundqvist, who started for the 18th time in 23 games.

The four-time All-Star said there was no doubt the Flyers deserved the victory.

''Today we played a team that did most things better than us; they played really well,'' Lundqvist said. ''The only thing I didn't like is we kept taking chances when it was a one-goal game.''

After giving up the first goal in each game during their skid, the Flyers outshot the Rangers 15-8 in the first period, going ahead on Konecny's unusual goal with 6:39 left. He sent the puck toward the net from the side boards, looking for Couturier, and the puck deflected off Lundqvist, Rangers defenseman Brady Skjei and a post before crossing the goal line.

Ryan Strome, in his fifth game with the Rangers after his acquisition from Edmonton, fought Konecny to a draw in the second period. Konecny responded to Strome's strong check on Couturier.

Couturier appreciated Konecny's response.

''That's the team spirit we need, battling for each other,'' he said.

Notes: New York F Mats Zuccarello (groin) returned to the lineup after missing three games. ... Rangers LW Cody McLeod missed his first game of what is expected to be a four-to-six-week absence. Connolly scores in 3rd, Capitals beat Rangers 5-3

STATS/AP

NEW YORK (AP) Brett Connolly was calling for the puck as he skated up the left side. He quickly put the Washington Capitals ahead when he got a cross-ice pass from John Carlson and helped the Capitals keep their winning streak going.

Connolly scored the tiebreaking goal on a one-timer from the left circle with 6:24 left in the third period, and the Capitals beat the New York Rangers 5-3 Saturday for their season-high fifth straight win.

''A little bit of open ice,'' Connolly said of his fourth goal of the season. ''(Carlson) saw me over there, I was calling for it. ... I got a good piece of it and it went right where I wanted it.''

Alex Ovechkin, Nic Dowd, Jakub Vrana and Tom Wilson also scored for defending Stanley Cup champion Washington, and Carlson had three assists. Pheonix Copley, starting in place of Braden Holtby, stopped 27 shots.

''Good team win, we're playing really well as of late,'' Connolly said. ''We're starting to get that feeling again through our room ... like we had toward the end of last year.''

The Capitals, who have rallied after giving up the first goal in four of their wins during their streak, trailed 1-0 after one period and by two midway through the second before scoring three straight to take the lead heading to the third.

''We're always believing we're in games,'' Connolly said. ''We're finding ways to win.''

Ryan Strome had tied the score 3-3 on a wraparound at 5:30 of the final period - his first goal with the Rangers since being acquired from Edmontonon Nov. 16.

Connolly, who also had an assist, then gave Washington the lead back, and Wilson added an empty-netter with 1:08 left for his fourth. He has nine points in seven games since returning from a season-opening suspension that sidelined him for 16 games.

Jimmy Vesey, Brady Skjei and Ryan Strome scored for the Rangers, who lost their second straight, ending a seven-game winning streak on home ice. Kevin Hayes had two assists and Alexandar Georgiev finished with 23 saves.

Trailing 1-0, the Capitals came out with increased intensity in the second period and scored three goals while outshooting the Rangers 15-9.

''You can't take a period off against anyone, let alone the defending Stanley Cup champions,'' Rangers coach David Quinn said. ''If you're going to have a chance to beat them, you're going to have to stay on them for 60 minutes. You can have lapses where you don't play well, but they can't be 20-minute lapses.''

Just 31 seconds after Skjei doubled the Rangers' lead, Dowd tipped Carlson's shot for his second to pull the Capitals back within one midway through the second.

Vrana then tied it with his sixth as he beat Georgiev with a backhander with 3:33 left.

Ovechkin put the Capitals ahead, tipping Carlson's pass from the right side with 30 seconds left. It was Ovechkin's 17th goal, tying him for the league lead with Boston's David Pastrnak and Buffalo's Jeff Skinner.

''(Dowd's) goal is huge,'' Wilson said. ''We know when we're not playing the way we want to. We know when it has to turn around. ... They've been playing some good hockey at home, so it was big for us to be able to do that.''

Near the midpoint of the second, Skjei scored on a rebound of Brendan Smith's shot that came off the end boards and right to him on the outside edge of the left circle at 9:39 to make it 2-0 on the Rangers' first shot on goal of the period.

Vesey gave New York a 1-0 lead less than 15 seconds after coming out of the penalty box near the midpoint of the first. Hayes brought the puck up the left side on a 2-on-1 rush, cut toward the net and dropped the puck back to Jesper Fast, who tapped it to the right, and a trailing Vesey put it under a sprawled Copley's left pad for his eighth at 9:12.

NOTES: Ovechkin's goal was his 624th, pulling one behind Jarome Iginla and Joe Sakic for 15th place on the NHL's career list. Ovechkin now has 33 goals and 51 points in 54 career games against the Rangers. ... The Capitals have outscored opponents 35-23 in the second period. ... Capitals also won the first meeting 4-3 in OT at home on Oct. 17. The teams play two more times, Feb. 24 at Washington, and March 3 back at Madison Square Garden. ... LW Timothy Gettinger made his NHL debut one day after being called up from Hartford of the AHL. He was sent back down after the game. ... Strome now has four goals and 14 points in 19 games against the Capitals.
