Lundqvist makes 29 saves, Rangers defeat Senators 4-2

STATS/AP

NEW YORK (AP) Rangers coach David Quinn has set a new tone for his team and the priority has been to outwork opponents.

Marc Staal, Lias Andersson, Chris Kreider, and Mika Zibanejad scored, and Henrik Lundqvist made 29 saves as New York defeated the Ottawa Senators4-2 Monday night.

''It's a hardworking team,'' Rangers forward Kevin Hayes said. ''If you are not working hard, you are not playing. That's coach's rules. We work hard every night and we are kind of building an identity here.''

The Rangers extended their dominance at Madison Square Garden, improving to 8-1-0 at home in their last nine games.

Mark Stone scored twice, Brady Tkachuk had two assists and Craig Andersonstopped 29 shots for Ottawa, which fell to 2-8-1 in road games this season.

''It's tough to lose,'' Stone said. ''We are in the business of winning hockey games and right now we are struggling.''

Andersson broke a 1-1 tie at 3:26 of the third period, benefiting from a fortuitous bounce. Ryan Strome's shot deflected off the goaltender, then caromed off Andersson into the back of the net. The seventh overall selection from the 2017 NHL draft originally did not make the team when training camp ended, but has been with the Rangers since early November.

Ottawa challenged the play for goaltender interference, but the referee's initial call stood.

''We just sabotaged ourselves,'' Senators coach Guy Boucher said of his team's performance.''

Kreider finished a 2-on-1 opportunity with a slap shot that extended the Rangers' lead to 3-1 at 8:18 of the third period. Filip Chytil delivered a cross-ice pass to set up the opportunity.

Kreider has notched nine goals and five assists as the Rangers built a 10-3-1 record since Oct. 30.

The Senators knotted the game 1-1 when Stone was able to find a loose puck in front of Lundqvist at 13:03 of the opening frame. The Rangers challenged for goaltender interference but the call was not overturned and New York forfeited its timeout. Tkachuk and Colin White assisted on the play.

The 21-year-old White missed the previous game with an upper-body injury, but returned to action Monday.

Stone hammered a one-timer at 17:17 of the third period to pull Ottawa within one. Tkachuk and Matt Duchene assisted on the play.

Staal gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 10:55 of the first period, converting a one-timer in the slot. Mika Zibanejad forced a turnover in the offensive zone after the Rangers had extended pressure, and found Staal alone in the high slot. Staal snapped a streak of 94 games without a goal that dated to October 2017. Jesper Fast also assisted on the play.

''He is a calming influence on our team, in the locker room and on the ice,'' Quinn said of Staal. ''He works hard and wants to get better. He has defended well, I think he has eaten a lot of minutes and has played against the other team's top players.''

Zibanejad added an empty-netter at 18:21 of the final period and has scored a goal in each of the four games he has played in against the Senators.

Lundqvist picked up career victory 440 and is five wins away from tying Terry Sawchuk for sixth place on the NHL's all-time wins list.

''We played a hard game,'' Lundqvist said. ''We just have to realize what we are and what we have to do to have success. It starts with hard work and we have to pay attention to the details of the game. If we do, we can beat anybody.''

NOTES: Rangers forward Mats Zuccarello was sidelined for the second straight game with a groin injury. The Norwegian winger has missed eight of the previous 10 games. . As part of the NHL's Hockey Fights Cancer initiative, the Rangers wore purple warmup jerseys, and used purple tape during pre-game warmups. . Rangers defenseman Tony DeAngelo returned to the lineup after being a healthy scratch Saturday against the Capitals. . New York scratched Frederik Claesson. . Ottawa defenseman Mark Borowiecki missed his second straight game with an upper body injury and the Senators scratched forward Max McCormick.

Anderson earns 27-save shutout as Senators blank Rangers 3-0

STATS/AP

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) Craig Anderson is normally not one to show his emotions, but you could hardly blame the Ottawa Senators goaltender for wanting to celebrate.

Anderson raised his arms and pumped his fists after stopping 27 shots for his first shutout of the season as the Ottawa Senators beat the New YorkRangers 3-0 on Thursday night.

It was Anderson's 10th win this season, his first shutout since Dec. 16 and the 41st clean sheet of his career.

''It's been a while for me,'' Anderson said. ''Sometimes when you've given up a lot of goals and you get caught up in the whole statistic of things and you try not to as best you can, but tonight was one of those nights where everything kind of came together and it's just my emotions towards the guys.''

This marked just the third time this season that the Senators held an opponent to 30 shots or fewer.

''That's a great effort by everyone,'' an animated Anderson said. ''I thought the guys' attention to detail was outstanding. We generated plenty of scoring chances, made some pretty plays in the offensive zone and defensively we were paying the price doing the little things, making the right plays, making the right reads.''

Matt Duchene had a goal and an assist. Drake Batherson and Magnus Paajarvi also scored as the Senators won their second consecutive game.

''It was a total team commitment from beginning to end,'' coach Guy Boucher said. ''Even at the end you could see guys blocking shots with 30 seconds left. That's what we're going towards.''

Henrik Lundqvist had a rough start but finished with 31 saves for New York.

He gave the Senators full credit, saying: ''They deserved the win.'' But he also said the Rangers need to be better on the road after dropping to 3-7-2 away from home.

''I feel like it's not just one game, it's starting to become a road thing,'' Lundqvist acknowledged. ''It's something we need to adjust and correct real quick.''

Rangers coach David Quinn thought his team got worse rather than better as the game went on after falling behind 2-0 in the first period.

''During the course of a game there's going to be stretches where you don't play well,'' Quinn said. ''You hope to make them better. You hope to stop them and recover, be mentally tough enough to get your wits about you and regroup and we just never did it. We just got worse and worse and worse as the game went on.''

Boucher credited his often-overlooked fourth line of Paajarvi, Zack Smithand Tom Pyatt for doing an outstanding job against New York's top line of Chris Kreider, Mika Zibanejad and Ryan Strome.

''They were great defensively, but also really good offensively,'' Boucher said. ''Their line set the tone for everything and really did a great job against the opponent's top line and that's the difference.''

Trailing 2-0, the Rangers thought they had cut the Senators' lead in half near the midpoint of the second period but the goal was waved off because the referee had blown the whistle prior to the puck crossing the goal line.

With the Senators dominating most of the action, Colin White nearly made it 3-0 when he rang a shot off the post.

Ottawa did go ahead 3-0 late in the second after an impressive passing display that ended with Duchene scoring his team-leading 12th. Duchene has eight goals and 14 assists in his last 12 games.

The Senators jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period.

Batherson scored his third of the season 2:06 in off a great pass from Duchene. Paajarvi made it 2-0 at 14:35 with his second of the season and first point in 11 games as he slipped a shot under Lundqvist's right arm.

NOTES: With an assist on Duchene's goal, Ryan Dzingel picked up his 100th career point. ... Max McCormick was a healthy scratch for the Senators.

Weber, Lehkonen each score twice, Canadiens top Rangers 5-2

STATS/AP

MONTREAL (AP) Montreal Canadiens captain Shea Weber says he really missed that winning feeling.

In his second game back from injury, Weber and Artturi Lehkonen each scored twice and the Canadiens snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the New York Rangers on Saturday night.

The 33-year-old defenseman missed 73 games following surgeries on his right knee and left foot. He had an assist in a losing effort in his first game back on Thursday.

''The biggest thing is winning,'' said Weber, who gave the Canadiens a 2-0 lead after one period. ''If you help out by scoring goals, or stopping goals, whichever way it is, it's coming in here after getting two points that I definitely miss the most.''

Tomas Tatar also scored for the Canadiens, who won for the first time at home since Nov. 10. Carey Price stopped 20 shots.

Jimmy Vesey and Ryan Strome scored for the Rangers, losers in four of their last five games. Backup goalie Alexandar Georgiev made 37 saves on 42 shots. Mika Zibanejad had two assists.

The Canadiens outshot New York 42-22 and beat the Rangers for the fourth straight game at the Bell Centre.

Montreal went up 2-0 in the first period on Weber's first two goals of the season. He was playing just his second game since returning from an injury.

Weber scored 3:53 into the game, sending a one-timer from the blue line past Georgiev. It was Weber's first goal since Dec. 5, 2017.

''The guys on the bench were all so happy when he scored his first goal,'' said Canadiens head coach Claude Julien. ''He's earned that respect from his teammates, from us, just by the way he handles himself. Everyone is extremely happy for him tonight. Second game, scores a couple of goals, sets the tone and has a real solid outing.''

He netted his second of the game on a great play by Tatar. Lying on the ice with his back to the play after being tripped at the blue line, Tatar spotted a streaking Weber and fed him with a backhand pass for the partial break. Weber went high to the glove side and scored with eight seconds remaining in the first period.

''That was a crusher,'' Rangers coach David Quinn said. ''To give that goal up in the fashion that we did really was a tough pill to swallow and tough to overcome. You know we're not in a great mindset right now, and to come in the second period down 2-0 playing the way we did the last seven or eight minutes and give up a goal of that fashion really set us back.''

Lehkonen doubled Montreal's lead - and his goal tally for the season - with two quick scores early in the second.

The Canadiens went up 3-0 when Lehkonen beat Georgiev with a wrist shot on a 2-on-1 at 2:04. The Rangers goalie smashed his stick against the post in anger after the goal.

Lehkonen made it 4-0 at 5:29, a quick release on Georgiev's blocker side after a giveaway by Neal Pionk behind his own net.

With the teams playing 4-on-4, the Rangers got one back on a wrist shot by Vesey at 8:10 of the second.

Strome, on the power play, made it 4-2 with 5:49 remaining in the middle frame.

Tatar, with his 11th of the season, restored Montreal's three-goal lead with a power-play goal at 10:28 of the third.

NOTES: The Canadiens placed former first-round draft pick Nikita Scherbakon waivers earlier on Saturday. ... Speedy forward Paul Byron was back in the lineup for Montreal after missing 14 games with a lower-body injury.

Scheifele's SO goal caps Jets' rally past Rangers

STATS/AP

NEW YORK (AP) The Winnipeg Jets knew it was only a matter of time until their relentless offensive would eventually break through and overcome a three-goal deficit.

Mark Scheifele scored to start Winnipeg's third-period comeback and then got the deciding goal in the shootout as the Jets rallied to beat the New York Rangers 4-3 Sunday night.

''We know we got a lot of skill,'' Scheifele said. ''We know we can put three goals in a period.''

Jack Roslovic and Bryan Little also scored in the third as the Jets erased a 3-0 deficit and won their third straight. Jacob Trouba had two assists and Connor Hellebuyck stopped 16 shots.

''I don't think we felt like we were out of the game,'' Jets captain Blake Wheeler said. ''They got a pretty good guy in between the pipes. Our mindset going into the third was just try to throw everything at him (Lundqvist). See if we can squeak one by him and get a little momentum.''

Marc Staal had a goal and an assist, and Chris Kreider and Jesper Fast also scored for New York. Henrik Lundqvist made 39 saves through overtime as the Rangers lost for the fourth time in five games. New York also lost in a shootout for the first time this season after starting 4-0 in tiebreakers.

''They owned us, we tried to survive for two periods. They just kept coming,'' Lundqvist said. ''When a game is played like that you know they are going to have enough looks to come back. ... But I felt like they were the better team, no question.''

Mika Zibanejad, who had two assists, scored in the second round of the shootout for the Rangers, and Laine then tied it. After Hellebuyck forced Jimmy Vesey wide, Scheifele - who got the game-winner in overtime at New Jersey on Saturday - beat Lundqvist for the win.

''Our goalie was outstanding from the drop of the puck,'' Rangers coach David Quinn said. ''That is one heck of a hockey team. Probably the best team we have seen all year.''

Winnipeg trailed 3-0 after two periods before Scheifele and Roslovic each scored in the first 4:36 of the third period to pull the Jets within one. Scheifele extended his point streak to five games and has registered five goals and four assists during that stretch.

''Wheeler is probably the best passer in the league,'' Scheifele said after Wheeler delivered a perfectly placed backhand pass to set up Winnipeg's first goal. ''He is a special player. I am pretty lucky to have him dish me the puck.''

Little tied it with 2:30 left in regulation when he buried a long-rebound opportunity. Nikolaj Ehlers fired a hard slap shot that caromed off the pads of Lundqvist right to Little's stick.

Fast opened the scoring late in the first period after executing a give-and-go to perfection with Zibanejad with 2:28 left. Zibanejad exited the penalty box after the Rangers successfully killed off three opening-period penalties and led an odd man rush opportunity. Neal Pionk skated hard toward the net which opened up a passing lane for Zibanejad to find Fast cutting to the back post.

Winnipeg outshot New York 11-4 but trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes.

Staal doubled the Rangers' lead when his sharp-angle wrist shot beat Hellebuyck with 7:49 left in the middle period. Kreider made it 3-0 when he redirected Zibanejad's shot with 1:06 left.

NOTES: The Rangers held a pregame ceremony to retire Vic Hadfield's No. 11. The physical winger was the first skater in franchise history to become a 50-goal-scorer in the 1971-72 season. Rangers vs Panthers: Rangers End Losing Streak with Shootout Win Over Panthers

After an extended five day break, the New York Rangers returned to action tonight looking to get back into the win column. Despite blowing three separate leads in this game, the Rangers were able to hang on and defeat the Florida Panthers 5-4 in the shootout. The Rangers improved to 5-1 in the shootout, and picked up two crucial points on the road as well. Here is tonight’s goal breakdown.

1-0 Rangers
Mika Zibanejad (9) - Assists: Jimmy Vesey (6) & Kevin Hayes (13)

With the Rangers having fresh legs coming into this game, they were able to jump on the Panthers pretty early in the first period. Mika Zibanejad picked up his ninth goal of the season off of a double deflection in front, and he slammed home the loose puck at the top of the crease. Zibanejad’s goal set the tone for the period, in which the Rangers played their most complete 20 minutes in quite a while.

2-0 Rangers
Vladislav Namestnikov (3) - Assists: Kevin Hayes (14) & Fredrik Claesson (1)

Later on in the second period, the Rangers doubled up their lead with a shorthanded goal coming from Vladislav Namestnikov. Kevin Hayes deserves all of the credit for this goal after his hard work in the corner, followed by a ridiculous pass through two players and out to Namestnikov. With plenty of time to pick his spot, Namestnikov made a few quick moves before sliding the puck past Roberto Luongo to make it a 2-0 game.

2-1 Rangers
Keith Yandle (5) - Assists: Mike Hoffman (13) & Jonathan Huberdeau (25)

Despite an extremely strong period by the Rangers, the Panthers slowly chipped away at the two goal lead less than a minute into the second period. Keith Yandle was able to put the Panthers back within a goal after a bomb of a slap shot from the point that slipped between Henrik Lundqvist’s pads.

2-2 Tie
Jonathan Huberdeau (8) - Assists: Keith Yandle (22)

Nearly three minutes later, the Panthers swung the momentum back in their favor with a bit of a fortunate goal coming from Jonathan Huberdeau. The goal came off of a 2-on-1 rush into the Rangers zone, and Huberdeau finished it off with a weak wrister after looking off Evgenii Dadonov on the far side. Henrik Lundqvist was clearly fooled by the change in speed on the shot, and that evened the game at two.

3-2 Rangers
Matt Beleskey (1) - Assists: Brady Skjei (7) & Tony DeAngelo (7)

About two minutes after the Panthers tied the game, the Rangers regained their lead with a nifty deflection by Matt Beleskey. The goal would be Beleksey’s first goal as a Ranger, and it was surely a decent way to get your first. He was able to deflect the puck through his own legs off of a Brady Skjeipoint shot, and beat Luongo over the right arm.

3-3 Tie
Aaron Ekblad (7) - Assists: Jonathan Huberdeau (26) & Evgenii Dadonov (15)

The Panthers once again clawed back in this game to make it a 3-3 game heading into the third period. A beautiful cross-ice feed by Jonathan Huberdeau created the chance and Aaron Ekbladfinished the play off with plenty of net to shoot. Henrik Lundqvist was unable to get back into the position, and we were tied for the second time.

4-3 Rangers
Fredrik Claesson (2) - Unassisted

Fredrik Claesson gave the Rangers some life again just 1:32 into the final frame with a wicked wrist shot from just inside the left faceoff circle. Luongo had clear view of the shot the entire time as there was no screen in front, and Claesson beat him cleanly over the shoulder.

4-4 Tie
Aleksander Barkov (11) - Assists: Keith Yandle (23) & Mike Hoffman (14)

Blowing leads in the third period is starting to become a trend for this Rangers team, and it happened yet again with under 10 minutes remaining. A costly penalty by Mika Zibanejad put the Panthers up a man, and Aleksander Barkov took full advantage with a nasty wrister from the high slot. The shot wound up barely changing direction after deflecting off of Neal Pionk, and beat Lundqvist just under the crossbar.

Shootout - 5-4 Rangers

Despite the Rangers needing the shootout the decided their last couple of games, they have fared surprisingly well. Mika Zibanejad and Kevin Shattenkirk both scored during the first two rounds to give the Rangers an early 2-0 advantage. Jonathan Huberdeau was able to bring the Panthers back within a goal, but Kevin Hayes iced the game in the third round with a disgusting move to his forehand and gave the Rangers a 5-4 win.

Following tonight’s victory, the Rangers will spend tomorrow in Florida before returning to action on Monday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Stamkos has 3 goals, Lightning beat Rangers 6-3

STATS/AP

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) Steven Stamkos and the Tampa Bay Lightning are piling up points.

Stamkos had three goals to become the first player from the 2008 draft to reach 700 points, and the NHL-leading Lightning won their seventh consecutive game by beating the New York Rangers 6-3 on Monday night.

''Stammer is finding his groove,'' Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said.

Stamkos scored power-play goals that tied the game in the first and second periods. The center completed his ninth hat trick and first since Oct. 13, 2014, against Montreal from the slot at 10:41 of the third.

''I knew it had been a while,'' Stamkos said with a laugh. ''I don't know the exact date . I don't want to hear it.''

The Lightning star, coming off a two-goal, two-assist outing in Saturday night's 7-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche, has 701 points in 696 career games. He joins Martin St. Louis (953) and Vincent Lecavalier (874) as the only Tampa Bay players reaching the 700-point milestone.

Ryan McDonagh had a go-ahead goal, Anthony Cirelli had the other two Tampa Bay goals, and Louis Domingue made 23 saves.

Kevin Hayes had two goals and Jesper Fast also scored for the Rangers, who have lost six of eight (2-5-1). Henrik Lundqvist stopped 30 shots.

''To be able to beat some of the best teams, you have play really strict and smart, and make the right decision with or without the puck,'' Lundqvist said. ''So, the next time we play a top team like this we need to do all those things.''

New York defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk left in the second period with an upper-body injury. He took a check around the left shoulder and had a sling on his left arm postgame.

Rangers coach David Quinn had no update after the game on Shattenkirk, who will be evaluated Tuesday.

Stamkos scored from the left circle while falling down at 6:19 of the second before McDonagh put Tampa Bay up 3-2 with 7:18 left in the period.

''Nothing kind of seems to phase us,'' McDonagh said.

Cirelli extended his goal streak to three games 24 seconds before Stamkos' third goal of the goal.

Fast and Cirelli, with an empty-netter, had late third-period goals.

The Rangers took a 1-0 lead 12:19 into the game when Hayes had a backhander from the left circle deflect off McDonagh's skate.

After Stamkos scored at 14:09 of the first, Hayes made it 2-1 with a rebound goal just 58 seconds later.

The Lightning went 2 for 6 with the man advantage.

''Take that many penalties, you're not going to beat Tampa,'' Lundqvist said. ''That's just the way it is. We can work really hard and do a lot of good things but it's too important in the game. Hopefully we really learned a lesson.''

New York failed to score on its lone power-play.

''Ten minutes extra killing penalties is just not a recipe to have success in this league or any league really,'' Quinn said.

NOTES: New York has been ahead after the first just seven times (3-3-1). . Lightning RW Nikita Kucherov had an assist and has 22 assists and 27 points over his last 14 games. . Stepan scores in OT to lift Coyotes to 4-3 win over Rangers

STATS/AP

NEW YORK (AP) The Arizona Coyotes had every reason to feel the deck was stacked against them. They had lost four straight and trailed 3-0 in the second period against the New York Rangers.

However, instead of accepting another loss, Arizona rallied back to tie the score and Derek Stepan scored with 32 seconds left on the clock in overtime against his former team as the Coyotes beat the Rangers 4-3 Friday night.

''I'd be lying to you if I told you that didn't feel good,'' Stepan said of getting winner back on his former home ice. ''We never quit on it. We stayed with our system. I like this group's resiliency and character. Down 3-1 we could have easily coast through the third period but kept our foot on the gas pedal.''

Stepan fired a wrist shot off the crossbar 4 1/2 minutes into the extra period as the Coyotes beat the Rangers for the first time in 10 meetings. Nick Schmaltz picked up his 100th career NHL assist on the play.

Jordan Oesterle, Josh Archibald and Oliver Ekman-Larsson also scored for Arizona, and Adin Hill stopped 27 shots.

Kevin Hayes had a goal and an assist, and Pavel Buchnevich and Mika Zibanejad also scored to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead less than six minutes into the second. Henrik Lundqvist finished with 30 saves.

''It's just tough to accept this one. It's a game that was right there for us,'' Lundqvist said. ''That was a tough one, felt like we should have won this one.''

Oesterle got the Coyotes on the scoreboard at 10:42 of the middle period when his slap shot from the blue line deflected off Lundqvist's arm. Schmaltz record his first of two assists on the play.

Stepan found Archibald cutting past the hashmarks with 6:49 left in the third to pull the Coyotes within one, and Ekman-Larsson fired a sharp-angled shot over Lundqvist's glove to tie it 3:48 later.

''Everyone is tired of losing,'' Ekman-Larsson said. ''It could have easily gone the other way. I feel like we have a different group, nobody ever gives up on a play or in a game. That's what we want to keep building on. We want to get back in the playoff race and that's how you do it.''

Buchnevich opened the scoring when he hammered a one-timer at 4:01 of the first period. The Russian winger missed the previous 13 games with a broken thumb. Jimmy Vesey had an assist on the play to extend his point streak to three games.

Hayes tallied his eighth of the season with 3:34 left in the opening period. Mats Zuccarello delivered a well-placed cross-ice pass to set up the goal. Hayes posted a multi-point game for the third consecutive contest, and has three goals and three assists in the that span.

Zibanejad snuck a wrist shot past Hill at 5:48 of the second as New York converted for the third time while up a skater. Chris Kreider was planted in front to provide a screen, and Neal Pionk recorded an assist. Pionk leads the Rangers in power-play assists (10) and power-play points (12) this season.

''We have to figure it out,'' Rangers coach David Quinn said after his team squandered a three-goal lead at home for the second straight time. ''We have to get better.''

New York was 1-15 on the man-advantage in the previous eight games and Arizona entered the game with the NHL's top penalty killing unit.

Alex Tuch buried a sharp-angled shot just over two minutes into OT, giving the Golden Knights a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers on Sunday.

''It's great to score in front of friends and family,'' said Tuch, from Syracuse, New York. ''I know what Madison Square Garden is, what it means to the city. It's pretty cool to not only score the overtime winner, but to score in this building.''

Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 27 shots in his 423rd career victory, which moved him into a tie with Tony Esposito for ninth on the NHL's wins list.

''Since the day we got him in the expansion draft, he is the leader of our group,'' Golden Knights coach Gerard Gallant said of Fleury. ''He gives us a chance to win every night.''

Paul Stastny, Reilly Smith and William Carrier scored for Vegas, which extended its points streak to four straight games. The Golden Knights blew a three-goal lead in an overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils on Friday night.

Chris Kreider, Brady Skjei and Mika Zibanejad scored for the Rangers, and Kevin Hayes had three assists. Henrik Lundqvist made 37 saves as New York dropped its third consecutive home game, all after regulation.

''It was embarrassing,'' Rangers coach David Quinn said. ''You can't come out and play hockey like that.''

The Rangers dropped the previous two games at Madison Square Garden in stunning fashion, letting three-goal leads slip away against the Jets and Coyotes.

''This game is so much about the mind and how you recharge after wins and losses,'' Lundqvist said.

Kreider tied the game at 3 when his wrist shot sailed past Fleury's glove at 3:29 of the third period. It was Kreider's team-leading 15th of the season.

Carrier gave Vegas a 3-2 lead at 13:12 of the second period. The 23-year-old took the puck from Rangers forward Lias Anderrson in the neutral zone to spark a 2-on-1 opportunity. Tomas Nosek assisted on Carrier's seventh of the season.

Just over a minute earlier, Zibanejad had tied the game at 2 with a one-time blast from the point. Hayes earned the assist and has four consecutive multiple-point games.

Skjei found the net on the Rangers' first shot of the game 1:13 into the opening period. Hayes played a puck off the boards to spring Pavel Buchnevich and Skjei on an odd-man rush.

''You can't lose your focus like we did,'' Lundqvist said. ''In the end, you got a point. It's one thing to lose when you're ready and prepared and play hard. The first two periods, that's not the way you want to play, not at home in front of the fans. You want to work harder.''

Smith evened the game when Colin Miller's shot from the point caromed off the glass and back over the net. Jonathan Marchessault assisted.

Stastny tallied his first of the season at 6:09 of the second period. The center returned to the lineup after missing the previous 30 games with a knee injury that he suffered early in the season against Buffalo. Stastny signed a three-year, $19.5 million contract as free agent in July.

NOTES: Before the game, the Rangers announced that alternate captain Jesper Fast will miss the next two to four weeks with an upper-body injury. ... Defenseman Adam McQaid returned to the lineup after missing the previous 21 games with an upper-body injury. ... Boo Nieves made his season debut with the Rangers after being recalled from the AHL on Saturday. ... Golden Knights forward William Karlsson skated in his 300th NHL game.

Hayes scores late as Rangers rally past Ducks 3-1

STATS/AP

NEW YORK (AP) After a lackluster first two periods, the New York Rangers came out with more intensity in the third and got a needed win.

Kevin Hayes scored on a short-handed breakaway with 40 seconds remaining and the Rangers rallied with three goals in the third period to beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-1 Tuesday night.

''Hopefully this win can kind of springboard us into some Ws,'' said Hayes, who extended his point streak to five games. ''We're trying to get better every day and I thought tonight was pretty flat the whole game from both teams, and then it was an exciting third.''

Vladislav Namestnikov had a goal and two assists, and Filip Chytil added an empty-netter for New York. Alexandar Georgiev, called up on Sunday after a stint in the minors, stopped 14 shots to help the Rangers win for the second time in eight games (2-3-3).

''We haven't felt great about ourselves for a while,'' New York coach David Quinn said. ''Tonight was a feel-good moment for us. .... To be able to overcome the first two periods and play with the purpose and the pace that we did and a little bit of an edge to our game, it's a testament to our guys.''

Trailing 1-0 after two periods, the Rangers came out aggressive in the third period and outshot the Ducks 14-1 over the final 20 minutes. After falling short on several chances in the first half of the period, the Rangers broke through near the midpoint.

Brett Howden brought the puck along the boards on the left side, skated toward the corner and sent a centering pass to Namestnikov, who cut between two Anaheim players and beat Johnson from the left side for his fourth at 9:52.

With Chytil in the penalty box for interference on Johnson - a call Quinn disagreed with - Hayes skated up the left side in the final minute of regulation, cut in and fired a shot that the goalie got a piece of, but the puck got through and across the goal line for his ninth. It gave Hayes four goals and 10 points in the last five games.

''I thought it was justice that we got a short-handed goal and I'll leave it at that,'' Quinn said.

Chytil then came out of the box and scored into an empty net with 19 seconds remaining to seal the win and help the Rangers avoid their fifth overtime game in the last six.

Pontus Aberg scored on a deflection for the Ducks, who had won nine of their previous 10 games. Chad Johnson, claimed off waivers from St. Louis on Dec. 11, finished with 21 saves in his Anaheim debut.

''We stopped playing in the third, and they came with a push,'' Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. ''We get kind of a break to get a power play and they score the goal. We set something up and didn't execute it and next thing we know the puck's in our net.''

The Rangers finished 0 for 3 on the power play, and the Ducks were 0 for 5.

Georgiev was sharp after his two-week stint with Hartford of the AHL to get more playing time.

''I felt pretty good,'' he said. ''It's a bit easier to play when you're in that rhythm. I got five games there in the two weeks, so it was easier to come back and be sharp.''

Neither team could muster many chances through the first two periods, with Anaheim holding a 14-10 edge on shots on goal.

Anaheim got on the scoreboard with 5:51 left in the middle period as Aberg's centering pass from behind goal line went off Rangers forward Mika Zibanejad's skate and past Georgiev for his 11th of the season.

The Ducks had a chance to double the lead as Getzlaf passed the puck off his skate to Ondrej Kase cutting to the net, but Georgiev made a nice glove save to his left with just under four minutes remaining in the middle period.

Keifer Sherwood hit a goalpost for the Ducks 3:13 into the game, and Nieves did the same a little more than seven minutes in.

NOTES: Johnson was 2-6-0 with 3.54 GAA in 10 games for the Blues this season. ... Getzlaf had an assist on Aberg's goal, giving him six assists and seven points in the last five games. ... Anaheim snapped a six-game road winning streak, falling one short of matching the franchise record set Nov 28 to Dec. 13, 2006. ... The Rangers won for the eighth time in the teams' last 10 meetings, including 3-2 in a shootout at Anaheim on Nov. 1. ... Georgiev was making his first appearance for the Rangers since finishing with 36 saves in a 5-2 loss at Montreal on Dec. 1.

Marner lifts Maple Leafs over Rangers in wild third period

TORONTO (AP) Mitch Marner was stuck on six goals for nearly a month. Suddenly, nobody can keep the red-hot forward from putting the puck in the net.

Marner scored twice during a wild the third period and the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the New York Rangers 5-3 on Saturday night.

The 21-year-old was originally credited with another goal later given to Andreas Johnsson, which prompted fans at Scotiabank Arena to litter the ice with headwear for a second consecutive hat trick that wasn't. Marner scored late in Thursday's 6-1 win over the Florida Panthers - a goal that some in the crowd thought was a third for John Tavares.

''People are losing their hats for no reason here. ... I feel pretty bad for them,'' said Marner, who recorded the fourth two-goal game of his career. ''If they're Leaf hats I'm guessing they're not cheap. Everything around here is pretty expensive.''

Marner had 16 assists during a 13-game goal drought that stretched from Nov. 16 to Dec. 13, but he has scored six times and set up two more in his last four outings.

''Every night he's one of our best players, if not the best player,'' Leafs coach Mike Babcock said. ''He works real hard, he's real good defensively, he does it right.''

Morgan Rielly and Patrick Marleau also scored for Toronto (24-10-2), while Frederik Andersen made 25 saves. Tavares and Johnsson, who recorded the second three-point game of his career, each had two assists as the Leafs won their third straight.

Babcock announced following the victory that fourth-line forward Tyler Ennis, a pleasant surprise with seven goals and four assists in 33 games this season, broke his ankle midway through the second period.

''We've only got 11 forwards so we'll have to do something,'' Babcock said.

Neal Pionk, Kevin Hayes and Chris Krieder scored for New York (15-14-5). Alexandar Georgiev made 31 saves as the Rangers dropped to 1-2-2 over their last five.

''They've got some pretty skilled guys,'' New York defenseman Marc Staalsaid. ''We've just got to learn from our positives.''

NOTES: The 39-year-old Marleau is the fourth player in NHL history to register at least 10 goals in 21 or more consecutive seasons. ... Leafs D Martin Marincin, in the lineup for a second straight night for Igor Ozhiganov(illness), played his 100th game with Toronto. ... Canadian IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe was in attendance.

Patrick lifts Flyers over scuffling Rangers 3-2 in shootout

NEW YORK (AP) After firing their general manager and coach in recent weeks, the Philadelphia Flyers have responded to a midseason shake-up.

Nolan Patrick scored the lone goal against Henrik Lundqvist in a shootout that lasted four rounds and Philadelphia beat the scuffling New York Rangers 3-2 on Sunday night.

''I had a plan,'' Patrick said. ''I watched the first couple of guys go in (and) he was pretty deep in his net. That's a move that I like to do. I have done it quite a bit throughout my life so far.''

Michael Raffl and Wayne Simmonds scored in regulation, and Michal Neuvirth made 32 saves as the Flyers won for the third time in four games since changing coaches. Scott Gordon was named interim coach after replacing Dave Hakstol behind the bench on Dec. 17. Chuck Fletcher took over as general manager in early December after Ron Hextall was fired on Nov. 26.

Chris Kreider and Boo Nieves scored for the Rangers, who lost their fifth in six games. Lundqvist stopped 28 shots in his first game since last Sunday's overtime loss to Vegas.

''I looked this morning at the standings and the separation is getting bigger,'' Lundqvist said after his team lost in extra time at Madison Square Garden for the fourth time this month. ''We've got to start winning here if we want to be a part of that (playoff) race. Take this break, regroup and realize how desperate we need to be coming back.''

The 30-year-old Neuvirth played in only his third game of the season and is one of six Flyers goalies to see action during the tumultuous season in Philadelphia.

''This was one of the biggest wins in my career,'' he said. ''First win of the season is always huge. I have to keep moving forward.''

Simmonds gave the Flyers a one-goal advantage 5:01 into the third period when he buried a rebound on the power play. The Rangers were short a man due to a too-many-men penalty. Sean Couturier and Jakub Voracek assisted on the play.

But the lead was short-lived as Nieves tied it 22 seconds later. Rangers rookie Lias Andersson forced a turnover behind the Flyers net to set up the fourth-line center. Nieves, playing in his fourth game of the season, scored his second NHL goal.

Raffl evened the game 1-all at 1:46 of the second when he scored his first of the season. The veteran forward kept the puck himself on an odd-man rush and beat Lundqvist to the glove side. Philadelphia defenseman Travis Sanheim assisted on the play.

''You feel a difference now, confidence-wise, in the locker room,'' Raffl said. ''We played pretty good ever since we came back from that road trip. We've got to keep pushing in that direction.''

The Rangers struck first when Kreider snapped a wrist shot under Neuvirth's blocker at 10:05 of the opening period. Kevin Hayes made a clever play to exit the zone, dancing around Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov before making a spinning pass to lead a streaking Kreider into the offensive zone all alone. Hayes extended his point streak to seven games, setting a career high.

The Rangers have been in a skid since a 4-0 loss at Philadelphia the day after Thanksgiving, going 3-6-4 in their last 13 games.

''We got into a third period trying to win a game,'' alternate captain Marc Staalsaid. ''We end up tying each other and lose in the shootout. It's disappointing.''

NOTES: New York scratched defenseman Tony DeAngelo for the second consecutive game. ... Philadelphia scratched defenseman Christian Folinand forwards Jori Lehtera and Jordan Weal.

Dubois, Blue Jackets beat Rangers 4-3 in OT for 5th straight

NEW YORK (AP) After the New York Rangers squandered another late lead at home, goalie Henrik Lundqvist was at a loss for words.

Pierre-Luc Dubois scored 31 seconds into overtime and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat New York 4-3 on Thursday night for their fifth straight victory.

Columbus tied the game with less than three minutes left in regulation, and the Rangers lost in extra time for the fifth time in their last six home games.

''It's really frustrating. I don't know what to say anymore,'' said Lundqvist, who made 25 saves. ''That's how it's been going the last few weeks. It's only on us.''

The Rangers took a 3-2 lead on Chris Kreider's second goal of the game at 12:06 of the third period and appeared to go ahead by two several minutes later on a goal by Ryan Strome, but Columbus coach John Tortorella challenged the play and it was ruled offside.

Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski then tied it at 17:40 when he scored his seventh of the season after the puck went back to him at the point and he fired it past Lundqvist.

The 20-year-old Dubois won it with his 14th goal of the season.

''We found a way,'' Tortorella said.

Backup goaltender Joonas Korpisalo finished with 19 saves for Columbus.

The teams played a generally haphazard and at times listless game after the three-day Christmas break. And once again, the victory margin was narrow. Sixteen of the last 18 games between the Rangers and Blue Jackets have been decided by one or two goals.

''I thought both teams didn't have a whole lot of juice,'' said Tortorella, the former Rangers coach. ''We have to try to keep getting better each day.''

Columbus struck first when Oliver Bjorkstrand scored at 9:17 of the first. Bjorkstrand took a pass from Boone Jenner and beat Lundqvist with a shot from the faceoff circle to the goaltender's right. Cam Atkinson also had an assist.

Jimmy Vesey tied it for the Rangers at 13:59 with his 10th of the season. Vesey took a pass from Kevin Hayes on a 2-on-1 break before tapping the puck past Korpisalo. With the assist, Hayes extended his point streak to eight games. Vladislav Namestnikov also assisted.

Columbus went ahead 2-1 when David Savard's long-range shot from the right circle beat Lundqvist at 16:08. The goal was the second for the Blue Jackets' defenseman. Bjorkstrand and defenseman Scott Harringtonassisted.

The Rangers tied it with a power-play goal by Kreider at 1:45 of the second. Kreider deflected a soft shot from the point by Mats Zuccarello. Hayes also added another assist. The 26-year-old forward leads the Rangers with 31 points.

Hayes has five goals and 10 assists during his eight-game scoring streak and also has nine points in his last nine games against Columbus.

''When you lose, no one is happy,'' Hayes said. ''You want to get two points every night.''

The Rangers were coming off a 3-2 home shootout loss to Philadelphia on Sunday. Starting with a Dec. 2 shootout loss to Winnipeg, their home woes have escalated and also included overtime losses to Arizona and Vegas.

The Rangers have points in seven straight home games but only two of them wins, going 2-0-5 during that stretch. New York is 3-6-5 overall since Nov. 23.

And with a 4-10-2 road record, they are facing seven of their next nine games away from home - where they haven't won in regulation yet this season.

''We certainly can't let this get in the way of us moving on,'' coach David Quinn said. ''The bottom line is we had chances to do things right. That's the only thing we can control. We didn't execute what we were supposed to do.''

Korpisalo made his first start since Dec. 11, when he lost 3-2 to Vancouver. Columbus had been 5-0-1 since behind starter Sergei Bobrovsky.

''We were a little inconsistent. It was one of those games where it was lucky for us to get the last goal,'' Bjorkstrand said. ''These are huge points. They will mean a lot at the end of the season.''

NOTES: Korpisalo also played in the previous game between the Rangers and Blue Jackets when New York won 5-4 in a shootout at Columbus on Nov. 10. ... The Rangers and Blue Jackets meet again Jan. 13 in Columbus and April 5 at Madison Square Garden. ... The Rangers scratched defenseman Tony DeAngelo and injured forward Jesper Fast. ... New York again played without defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, sidelined with a shoulder injury sustained Dec. 10 against Tampa Bay. ... Columbus scratched defenseman Dean Kukan and forward Lukas Sedlak.

Fast scores twice, Rangers beat Predators 4-3

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Jesper Fast made an immediate impact in his return to the New York lineup after missing five games due to an upper body injury.

Fast scored two goals, including the game winner, and added an assist as the Rangers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the Nashville Predators on Saturday night.

Chris Kreider had a goal and an assist, Marc Stall added a score and Mika Zibanejad had a career-high four assists for the Rangers, who earned their first road win in regulation this season. Henrik Lundqvist made 34 saves.

''I'm not scoring the goals, I'm just trying to set them up,'' said Zibanejad, who centered a line with Kreider and Fast. ''We've been playing together before and it was really clicking back then. We just went back to how we played. We find each other pretty well out there. It's nice to see (Fast) come back and get a couple.''

Nick Bonino scored a pair of power-play goals and Kevin Fiala also scored and had two assists for the Predators, who have lost six straight. Pekka Rinnemade 18 saves.

''You can't lose six in a row,'' Bonino said. ''Not in this league, not in this division, not with the parity there is. Just gotta get better.''

The Rangers were trailing 3-2 entering the third, but Staal and Fast scored in just over a three-minute span early in the period, giving New York the lead.

Staal converted a wrist shot from the slot off of a 3-on-2 rush at 4:23, then Fast scored his second of the night off a slap shot from the slot to make it 4-3.

''There's a lot of different ways to win hockey games, and each game presents a different challenge,'' Rangers coach David Quinn said. ''This one presented a challenge of being down 3-2, getting two goals in the third and then having to kill a penalty at a key time and doing a great job on the 6-on-5.''

Lundqvist stopped a one-timer off the stick of Nashville captain Roman Josiwith 23.2 remaining in the game with Rinne lifted for an extra attacker to preserve the win.

''It was definitely a battle, but it was a fun game to play,'' Lundqvist said. ''They're a good team. They're pretty balanced - good forwards, really good D, they move the puck well.''

Kreider scored the game's first goal at 2:42 of the opening period on a power play.

Above the right circle, Zibanejad faked a slap shot and then sent a pass to Kreider, who was just above the goal line to Rinne's right, where he was able to deflect the puck over the shoulder of the Finnish keeper.

Kreider's 20 goals lead the Rangers. He has scored in four consecutive games and five of his last six.

The goal came just seven seconds after Predators coach Peter Laviolette was assessed a bench minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct. Laviolette was unhappy with a hit former Predators player Cody McLeod delivered to defenseman P.K. Subban deep in the Nashville zone.

''It's a loss,'' Laviolette said. ''It's tough. They're mounting. We've got to put an end to it. We did enough good things through the course of the game. We got ourselves a lead going into the third. I think that's what makes it a tough one to swallow because typically we're good in that situation.''

Bonino tied the game at 1-all at 8:43 of the first.

From the left faceoff dot, Fiala sent a pass to Mattias Ekholm at the middle of the blue line. There, the Swedish defenseman sent a one-timer toward the Rangers net and Bonino was there to redirect the shot past Lundqvist.

New York made it 2-1 at 3:51 of the second. From behind the Nashville net, Zibanejad sent a pass to Fast, who was alone in the slot. He beat Rinne with a quick shot on the blocker side.

Fiala tied the game again at 4:44 of the second with an unassisted goal.

Driving down the right side on a 2-on-1, Fiala snapped a wrist shot low to Lundqvist's far side.

Bonino's second power-play goal of the game gave Nashville its first lead at 10:35 of the second after converting a rebound of his own shot at 10:35.

NOTES: Nashville C Kyle Turris missed the game with a lower-body injury. ...The Predators sold out all 51 home games they played at Bridgestone Arena in calendar year 2018. ... Rangers RW Kevin Hayes picked up one assist, extending his career-long point scoring streak to nine games. ... New York is 9-6-6 when scoring first this season.
