As much as I hate to say it, it's Ripken-like. Ripken had to know that going out on the field when he was well-below 100% was hurting the team. However, only he could take himself out of the line-up and he wasn't going to do it. The "streak" became bigger than the team. Jeter playing SS, and only SS for the Yankees, is so similar that it's silly.
Some of it is pride. Some of it is selfishness. But, more than anything, I think it's a belief that elite players have that "no one can do it better than me." You see it with so many aging athletes.
Too bad Ripken "moved himself" to 3B before the streak ended. Kind of kills your argument. He made a switch for the betterment of the team.
Comparing a guy who wants to play, even if he's injured, to a guy who selfishly refused to make a move to help the team because it might tarnish his legacy is what is silly.
Now, on with the truckstop whore stories. We need some entertainment here.
