You never did say who the pitchers were though.

You are dumb. Did you really suggest taking BABIP out of WHIP? So we should make it WHOBOPIP (Walks plus hits on balls out of play per inning pitched)?

You're just not getting it. WHIP represents the whole. BABIP is a fraction of the whole. It's not that BABIP is meaningless, but it doesn't give you the entire picture because it excludes stats.

If you ordered a pizza and someone gave you just a crust and sauce, what would you say? "This sucks! It's only half of the pizza equation!" And then when he adds cheese and toppings, you say "It still has crust and sauce - it sucks!!"

You still are not grasping basic concepts. Quantity vs. Quality, Partial vs. Whole, etc. For a supposed stat nerd and college grad, you really have a lot of trouble with the basics.
WHOBOPIP....My new favorite name for a useless stat. I love the **** this thread is producing.

I did not.

That may be my favorite of jtpsops posts.  It really shows what kind of crazy **** is floating around in that little brain of his.  Kind of like the post where he said the pitcher who has the better career isn't necessarily the better pitcher.

Are you planning on it or do they not exist?

He's got going to answer.  You have to wonder why not.
You know exactly why not.

You won't tell me whether or not you altered the stats.
No, it's because you're a chicken-**** who has done nothing but prove to EVERYONE reading this thread that you are AFRAID to back up your supposedly superior ability to judge players based on stats alone.
Hey genius, I already answered him.

Moron.
Sorry. It's taken me 20 minutes to read through 15 pages of RSF to find the part three pages ago where you finally manned up and answered him.

Maybe you should do that fist next time so you don't look so stupid.
2/29/2012 7:32 PM
Looks who's talking about looking stupid.

Have you found me 5 examples, in the 100+ years of baseball, where one could consider a pitcher with a 1.5 WHIP better than one with a 1.1 WHIP?
2/29/2012 7:36 PM
I thought you said you were going to get those?

WHIP and ERA in tandem are usually pretty reliable. Low WHIP + Low ERA = great pitcher. High WHIP + Low ERA = unreliable but great at getting out of jams. Low WHIP + High ERA = likely good stuff, but poor command and lots of HR.  High WHIP + High ERA = sucks.

Each of those stats gives you valuable information. BABIP does not offer anything off value. All that information (and a lot more) can be gained from WHIP.
That seems like the most sound thinking presented in this entire thread.

Well that's debatable.  But we're left with the problem that Carlton had a lower ERA and higher WHIP than Hunter.  Which lead jtpsops to insist that WHIP was the most important stat for pitchers.

Well my post from 6:02pm on the previous page dismissed ERA as a valid stat.  You previously dismissed WHIP as a valid stat.  So they cancelled each other out, and we are left with:

Hunter = Carlton

Really?  I'm sure I remember you saying you were going to spend a couple hours tracking those down.  Not sure why you'd want to or what it would tell you, but you seemed determined.
