It looks like Nettles was a very good defensively.  According to Baseball Reference's defensive metrics he was 3.6 wins above replacement defensively in 1976, 2.7 in 1973, and then had a bunch of years ranging from 0.5 - 1.9.  Very good defensively and better than Arod, who, as a Yankee, has been average to slightly above average defensively.

The problem for Nettles is that his bat is so far below Arod's that his glove can't make up the difference.  Arod has had two 9+ WAR seasons with the bat alone as a Yankee.  Another over 8, and a few in the 5's and 6's.  Nettles really can't come anywhere close to that.

More dumbass baseball analysis about a player that you've never seen play.

No surprise.

Is WAR the new FIP?

So it seems.  Just like "more" is "better".

Graig Nettles?  The guy hit .253/.329/.433 with the Yankees.  Unless you're joking and really just making fun of the Yankees.  In that case, good job.
I guess you never heard of "defense".

They have advanced metrics for that now.  If you understood baseball, you'd probably know that.
I would LOVE to hear your advanced metrics based argument that Nettles' glove was enough to overcome the huge difference in their offense.

Does one have to have ADVANCED METRICS!!!!!!! to have an argument/opinion.

And I'd love to hear how FIP is advanced in any way, shape or form.

Tec was the one that brought up advanced metrics.

See: "They have advanced metrics for that now. If you understood baseball, you'd probably know that."

But here's a good explanation of why FIP is an advanced metric:

The difference between most of the traditional baseball metrics and the advanced baseball metrics is that the traditional metrics measure what happened and advanced metrics measure a player’s contribution to what happened. In this case, ERA measures how many runs the other team scored while the pitcher was on the mound . While FIP measures the pitcher’s ability to prevent those runs scored, independent of the ability of the pitcher’s teammates.

I think you left out this part of tec's post:   I guess you never heard of "defense".

So, removing every aspect of pitching except strikeouts, walks and homeruns allowed makes it "advanced"?    Is that your contention?

I did.  So what?  I assumed we all knew he was talking about defense when he brought up advanced metrics.

Sure.  It more accurately measures the pitcher's contribution to run prevention.

You have to multiply by a number to make it looks like an ERA.  Now it's advanced.

Just wanted to make sure you knew you left something out.    You have tendency to halfass reply to half a post.     Didn't know if it was intentional or if you're so excited  to make a "point' that you just can't be bothered to read what someone wrote.

It's scaled to ERA to make it an easier quick reference.  It's not perfect, but it's better than ERA.
