STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS 2009-10 Topic

alright moy since you're such a prophet and obviously know how things will shake down for the next 5-10 years in the nhl, why don't you tell us what the standings and playoff results will be so we can all cash in?

I'm all for debating but enough of the I'm right you're wrong. I've been able to admit that certain players I thought would succeed have failed. I have no problems telling everyone that I was wrong about where the hawks would finish.

but it seems that you are very quick to judge players and teams, as evidenced by your hard on for buff in spite of his ABYSMAL last 2+ months. why can't you just admit that you're jumping the gun a little by condemning the hawks plan before 1 season is over (and anointing buff a Norris candidate after 3 months)? no one in their right mind in hockey judges players so quickly and if they do, they're usually perennial losers and make terrible trades, kind of like mike milbury.

The back of our roster isn't as good as last season's, but they aren't terrible.  There are some really nice pieces...Dowell, Pisani, Bickell, Ryan Johnson...and some real disappointments...Stalberg, Scott, the departed Boynton.  This is turning out to be a transition year, yet we should still be in the playoffs with this continued good play.  Toews has been incredible and is proving he's not only one of the top leaders in the game, but one of the top clutch players.

Both those articles are old..the most recent one Buff has cooled off since the new year and likely won't even be a Norris finalist.

bickell has been a nice surprise.  I'm not sold on the rest.

dowell - 18 points in ~60 games
pisani - 34 yrs old (and only 16 points)
johnson - 14 games (called up and sent down a lot) 34 yrs old.

Thats how it is with players getting paid $500k-1.5 mil - you 'hit' on very few.  The hawks going into next season once again attempting to have 5 or 6 of the 12 non-core guys perform like bickell has done... well, it doesn't bode well.

As for Toews -  he has impressed me.  As much as Toews has gained my respect this season - Kane has lost it.  He's not the type imo to carry a team on his shoulders when the going gets tough.  Its like I heard some announcer say "sometimes when you rush players to the nhl before they mature on and off the ice, they never seem to get back to that promising potential they once had".  I heard it this year not in reference to Kane - but I'm beginning to think it sums him up well.  I could be wrong andru ;)

true enough... but I posted those in reference to andru's post about no one in their right mind yada yada yada.... after three months.

All I said is he is being considered a norris candidate - and much of that was over a month ago.  I've always maintained Lidstrom is the best D-Man - even when you kept on a about kieth being the best in the world.

Dowell has been a solid 4th line C who is tough and works hard.  Pisani is a good PKer, though the unit has been bad as a whole.  Johnson is a good faceoff guy.  None will ever light the lamp a bunch, though.

As for Kane, he's still averaging a point per game and has been great lately.  That injured ankle was a drag, but he's been strong.  All that garbage about him drinking too much is crap.  He does his job and is one of the game'e elite talents.  I have no problem with him unless his partying starts to affect his game.  It hasn't so far.

Keith was the best defenseman in the world last season.  Find me another guy who outdid him in his play and accomplishments.

Hawks up 3-0 late in the 2nd in Minny so far,  We look as fast as I can remember tonight.

funny how you completely ignored the "nobody in hockey" part of my statement. bloggers abnd reporters are not part of that group because criticizing and predicting blindly and too early sells papers, so to speak.

Just so you know..... The Norris cup is voted on by writers. How many people do you know 'in hockey'? Just curious since you seem to have the inside scoop.

Can you even admit there was a media frenzy about Buff for Norris..... if you can I'll admit it has deservably died down. If you can't I'll just assume your another hawks fan rationalizing the loss of buff & Co.

I looked at Atlanta's roster and I'm very impressed with what buff and ladd have done this season. Ladd #1 in goals w/ 23. Buff #2 with 18. Both top 3 scorers on the roster and really the only names I recognize on the roster since I don't follow that team. Even if he doesn't win the Norris he is a HUGE addition to that team (and they obviously agree by paying all that money). So is ladd. Now if Atlanta will get these two some support good things might happen there.

Edit - even his points have gone from 35 as a forward to ~50s as a defender.

moy I never had any issue giving credit to Byfuglien for his start to the season, and i always said that the Hawks would miss Ladd and Versteeg WAY more than Buff, so no I don't think I am one of those Hawks fans who didn't think the guys they lost would be missed. My contention was that, as a Hawks fan, I got to watch Byfuglien ALOT the last 3 seasons and his biggest issue was never his ability or even opportunity, it was consistency, and that's why I kept saying before giving him any Norris mention let's wait and see if this time, he can sustain his great play.

As for Atlanta, they've got some good young players there in Evander Kane, Tobias Enstrom (who is probably the unsung hero and catalyst for byfuglien's good season), Alex Burmistrov who I watched quite often in the OHL and Anthony Stewart who I always thought would star for Florida, but it's taken him a while to find the success that his fellow 2005 Canadian Junior graduates have enjoyed (Carter, Richards, Getzlaf, Perry, etc...). I don't think they're quite ready to make a run just yet, but they've got some character guys over there.

And as for Buff's points increase, I'm sure going from 16 to 23 minutes per game, while nearly doubling his powerplay time has helped there, even with the move to D.

And lastly, about "who I know", I was never one to name drop, but let's just say that, living and growing up in and around Montreal and around hockey for the better part of 15 years, I've had the incredible fortune to play with (as a kid) and meet quite a few people who are way smarter and know way more than any of us about the game. I never claimed to have "inside information" because I don't necessarily, but I have picked their brains a few times about teams, players and rules over the years.

Hawks now reside in 5th in the West and can really help themselves with a win against Calgary tomorrow. Toews has become a legit Hart candidate and Crawford is the Calder fave. Should be one helluva stretch run.
3/1/2011 11:30 AM
Whoa...I wouldn't call Toews a Hart candidate just yet...I think there are too many guys ahead of him (like Stamkos, Luongo, Zetterberg and Thomas to name a few)...Crawford will definitely be in the Calder running though, but as good as he's been there's still a perception out there that the Hawks' goaltending is their weakness and i think that will hurt his chances. I can't see Taylor Hall NOT winning.
3/1/2011 11:55 AM
Also, as good as Tazer has been in the last month or so, I think if any Hawk should be considered for the Hart it's Patrick Sharp. He's been consistent all year and they wouldn't be anywhere near the playoffs without him.
