STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS 2009-10 Topic

Oh Captain, my Captain!

So 26 out of a possible 36 points since the all-star break...not too bad, but those two ot losses to Dallas and Phoenix last month are looming large right now, especially since we're playing both of them this week.

Yesterday was a decent enough game, though when the Caps really poured it on in OT the Hawks couldn't seem to contain them with the depleted defense corps and Dave Bolland's absence is also felt. Man the Caps look dangerous. No longer a soft team to play against, I think they're built to succeed in the playoffs this year and they really locked it down in the 3rd. A bad bounce created by a Lidstrom-like play by Keith to shoot the puck wide only prevented them from winning in regulation.

Tonight is a big game...coming off 3 straight losses and going up against a potential 1st round match-up in Niemi, Eager and the Sharks, they need to be up for this game. Time for some guys to step up again in place of the injured Bolland and Campbell. I'm looking for big nights for Frolik, who looked good yesterday, and Leddy.

I don't like our chances without Bolland and Campbell tonight.  We are precious thin and SJ is hotter than hell right now.  We need this game bad, but I fear we're gonna get romped.

Hawks chase Niemi in the 2nd with a 3 goal blitz.  Toews continues to push for the Hart Trophy with another goal so far.  That kid is Special.

Toews just named NHL's 1st star of the month for February. He's solidly in any Hart discussion.

Andru, only the truly stupid think our goaltending is a weakness. The voters will see how great he has been. No other rookie is close.
No other rookie is close?!?!?!?! Do you only watch 1 team??!?!?

Bobs could push Crawford for the Calder over the next 20 games (especially when he hits 30+ wins).

Sergei Bobrovsky 24-9, 2.46 GAA, .918 S%, 2 Assists

Corey Crawford 23-12, 2.13 GAA, .923 S%, 3 SO

I agree Crawford has the edge right now - but no one else even close?!?! I think Skinner and Hall have had nice seasons as well and will have a shot at the Calder. At this point Crawford has my vote - but it's not like he is running away with it.

And andru - don't you know that the Hawks have no weaknesses in muddy's mind?

Thats pretty close imo

Edit..... Crawford is at 2.36 gaa. Not 2.31 like listed above. Math + beer do not get along well ;)

EXTREMELY close...but I suspect that given the Flyers success as a team, Bob would get the nod if the numbers are that close. Team success has proven to sway voters of individual awards before.

As for the Hawks, last night was difficult to watch. I think Dallas played an excellent defensive game. I haven't seen them much this season but they really impressed me. They were disciplined, play a sound positional game and the few chances they did allow, Lehtinen stepped up and made sure the Hawks didn't get an inch.  The Stars are an interesting team because of how tightly their defense plays as a group without any big stars on the back end. They kind of remind me of Carolina's Cup winning team in that sense.

That being said, last night's loss makes the next game against Phoenix absolutely pivotal to the Hawks season. Hopefully they have at 2 out of Bolland, Bickell and Campbell back for that game because having all 3 of those players out really hurts with so little depth.

I still give the slight edge to crawford... I personally don't think anyone was even close to running away with the calder this season.

Its interesting though.... both goalies are near identical statistically.... yet the flyers (and myself) feel goaltending is a weakness for them and as muddy points out the hawks see their goaltending as a strength.
3/18/2011 2:25 PM
I believe that's because of the strength of the team in front of them. Because the Flyers are so much deeper and more talented than the Hawks this season, it stands to reason that Bob would be seen as inferior to Crawford, who has been able to match Bob's numbers behind an inferior team.

I think that the reason Hawks fans see goaltending as a strength is because we've watched Crawford bail the team out when they had no business being in certain games, whereas last season it was the opposite: no matter how bad Niemi or Huet played the team in front of them was good enough to win.

Crawford has been shaky lately, but none of those 3 goals last night were close to his fault.  Turco needs a couple games to stay sharp and give the kid a breather.

The PERCEPTION is that the Flyers goaltending is weak, when it probably hasn't been with Bobrowsky stepping his game up.  Besides, Flyers fans are notoriously bruytal critics and would dump on anyone after a bad stretch.  Our goaltending has been fine and not even close to a problem.
3/18/2011 4:20 PM
I agree with both points. Just find it interesting. I'd add that goaltending has always been weak in philly since ~75-76 when Parent left so we fans are just really used to saying its a weakness. crawford has 'looked' better than bob this season imo from what I've watched. crawford just seems cooler and more controled in net than bob who can look 'spastic' at times the way he moves around.
