"We, as a league, must do a better job of protecting the integrity of the game and the safety of our players. We must make it clear that those kinds of actions will not be tolerated and will be met with meaningful disciplinary action.

"If the events relating to Friday night reflect the state of the league, I need to rethink whether I want to be a part of it."

Time to quit again you POS!

Don Cherry from last year after the Savard hit.  It shows 12 different players that Cooke has tried to deliberately hurt.

Don Cherry is prophetic about Crosby.

C'mon zinnerpeg...where's the outrage over Matt Cooke's latest act? Oh wait, it was a Ranger, not a Canadien, so we probably won't hear anything from you.
It's time that the NHL threw this guy out on his A$$..Without a doubt the dirtiest player in the NHL..  Now you'd think since he's playing for the Penguins and Mario has recently been outspoken about this kind of stuff..they'd do something about him. Apparently as per TSN, the Penguins owners are not going to do a thing about Cooke..Does that make sense to anyone?  I mean really.....

Now to be honest, the next thing is..what is the NHL going to do?? Talk about NOT making sense!!

-Avery makes are rather 'offensive' comment to the media.  How long was he suspended for that?
-Oiler netminder Khabibulin was caught DUI last summer (a felony in all Provinces and States in Canada and the U.S.) and was he suspended for this?  Actually does any sport take action for this??
-What did Cooke get for his last transgression?  (the one after the Savard hit)

This is this guys third time in a very short time for this kind of thing..maybe time to kick his a$$ out of the NHL. Wait NO maybes about it, time for him to go!

SAK, Ruins' worshipper, I didn't comment cuz I didn't watch that game.
And another reason is that I have shut up about the whole topic, including regarding the bully actions of Chara on Max.

So now you're complaining that I quit complaining?
Even that I quit complaining about what happened to Max?

I completely agree!
Even if a Habs player were to be a hypocrite in a future game this season on this topic!
(don't forget that Moore unfairly injured Naslund, and then Bertuzzi unfairly injured Moore as revenge, since the league didn't really discipline Moore)

Elbowing to the head of an opponent is NOT exactly new to hockey.  Heck, one of the most famous of players was known to have put his elbow into the head of many opponents during his long NHL career.  Was almost as famous for that as he was for the other parts of his game.  I'm referring of course to Gordie Howe...

You speak about Bertuzzi sucker punching Moore (don't get me started on this incident), heck far more famous NHL players have done this. Didn't a particular HOF member sucker punch Jamie Macoun breaking his jaw . If I remember correctly all Messier got for this was 4-5 game suspension where as Macoun was gone for the rest of the season and playoffs.

Now both Howe and Messier are in the Hockey HOF....but I'll bet nothing in their bios in the HOF really mention these things about them.

This kind of stuff ain't exactly new to the NHL, the thing is NOW we are aware of the long term effects this has to people.  It's matter of changing the culture of the game...sometimes what is required is a radical and extreme measure has to be taken.  A strong message has to be sent...so banning Cooke from the NHL is exactly the message needed to be sent, IMO.  It lets the players see you are serious about changing things and also lets your fans know this too.  A player knowing that doing this kind thing may mean the end of his NHL career, maybe that's what it takes to change things. Because let's face it, suspension, fines etc are not working..proof of that is repeat offenders out there like Cooke.

Problem is Bettman and Campbell or the owners don't have the balls to do this.  So Cooke will get a 5 game suspension (cause the player was not seriously hurt) and he'll come back just do this kind again...

Looks like Cooke will get at least 10 games.

10 games PLUS the first round of the playoffs......

About freaking time! If Cooke comes back and does something stupid again next season, he should be gone for an entire calendar year.

I'm also glad Ray Shero backed the NHL on the suspension. Ballsy move by the Pens GM saying:

"The suspension is warranted because that's exactly the kind of hit we're trying to get out of the game. Head shots have no place in hockey. We've told Matt in no uncertain terms that this kind of action on the ice is unacceptable and cannot happen. Head shots must be dealt with severely, and the Pittsburgh Penguins support the NHL in sending this very strong message."

This is will stop him?  Not 'bloody' likely..players like him are totally incapable of changing.  It's not like this was an 'isolated' incident, he has done this crap before and will again.  In his mind he has done NOTHING wrong.  That is very scary....

I'm sure if he did talk to reporters he come up with some lame a$$ excuse for what happened and may even deny it was a shot to the head OR say the other player lowered themselves etc etc. It is no surprise he hasn't spoken to the press, Penguins don't need him justifying something that one of their owners has openly spoken against.

Where is Mario in all of this? Has he opened up his wallet and pay $1,000,000 to set his example?  Shouldn't he suspend Cooke the rest of the way or at least take the A off of his chest?  I doubt it.  He likes Cooke to be a leader on his team.

Suspended Penguins agitator Matt Cooke says he sees the error in his ways.

"I realize and understand, more so now than ever, that I need to change," Cooke told Pittsburgh reporters Monday night. "That's what I wanted my message to be."

Cooke was banned for the rest of the regular season and first round of the playoffs for elbowing Rangers defenceman Ryan McDonagh in the head.

Pittsburgh has 10 games remaining in the regular season so the suspension will be a minimum of 14 games. Cooke will forfeit US$219,512.20 in salary.

"I'm fortunate that Ryan McDonagh wasn't hurt," said Cooke. "I don't want to hurt anybody. That's not my intention. I know that I can be better. ... I made a mistake, and I'm the one who's accountable for that. And I take full responsibility for it."

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, quoting GM Ray Shero, said Cooke had sent McDonagh a text message.

Cooke said he had apologized to the team and Penguins organization.

"My actions will speak louder than words. That's what matters most."
