You would think some people would be more excited about their team winning than writing out their homoerotic fantasies.

Well, that was a classic series and it ended the only way it could.

The Canucks showed alot yesterday. They came out and dominated most of the game. Corey Crawford was sensational, making arguably the greatest save I've seen considering the stage, Jonathan Toews came through (again) when his team needed him most, and Roberto Luongo finally made the one save he hadn't been able to make all these years. The last 2 games of this series epitomize what the NHL playoffs are all about. Both teams showed grit, determination and desire and neither one quit.

I'm truly happy for guys like Ryan Kesler, Alex Edler, Chris Higgins (who I thought was fantastic last night) and Alain Vigneault who showed alot of class by not making excuses for his team like Gillis and some Canucks fans did. He coached an excellent series and pushed all the right buttons.

As the fan of a team that has endured so much heartbreak over the years, I'm also happy for the Canucks fans. They've had their fair share of disappointments (like 1994) and it was nice to see such a passionate fan base finally rewarded, even though some of them will never be gracious winners or classy losers.

I think anybody who watched this series and doesn't give full marks to both these teams for giving us one of the most entertaining, epic 7 game series is a farce of a hockey fan. As a Hawks fan, I'm disappointed my team lost. As a hockey fan, I can't remember a series that had so much of what makes playoff hockey great.

I'll never forget the amazingly intense battles between Joanthan Toews and Ryan Kesler every single game, the coaching chess match between Coaches Q and V, Corey Crawford and Alex Edler's coming out parties as two young guys who were probably their respective team's series MVPs, and the incredible story of Roberto Luongo who showed astounding perseverance in the face of some of the most incredible pressure I've ever seen put on one player.

As per usual, with my team out, I will continue watching and cheering for a Canadian team to bring one home. It's been too long. That said, I look forward to the Hawks retooling and returning to the playoffs next season, with the hope that we may get another epic chapter in this incredible rivalry that has turned into one of the most intense match-ups in sports.

Good luck Canucks. Don't under-estimate the Preds like we did in round 1 last season.

...and GO Flyers!

I can't tell if the Canucks are just THAT sloppy of a team or if the refs really do pick on them (since I haven't watched the last two seasons series between the two teams) but at some point last night they showed both teams power play stats for the series and VAN had some 14 PPs, CHI 26 in the first 6 games. Thats ~4 minutes more per game the canucks had to kill. With that kind of play it is impressive they even won this series. I always have a deep respect for teams that can shrug off penalties and instead of get ****** at the refs and cry they go out and win (like its out of spite).

No hard feelings at all juskay. Again, Congrats. A nights sleep has added some perspective as well.

Toews SHG was one hell of an effort on his part. There - I said it.

Toews named a Selke finalist today. Very nice to be nominated with both Datsyuk and Kesler...two other class acts.

Surprised Datsyuk was nominated because he didn't play a full season...that said, I'd be shocked if Kesler didn't take it this season.

Now that I've had some time to digest what just happened and reflect on the season, a couple of things stand out as we go into the off-season:

1. Corey Crawford has made himself a must-sign RFA. He's proven he can steal games and be a franchise goaltender. By locking him up this summer, the Hawks may get him at a bargain price.

2. Michael Frolik finally showed some of the 1st round promise he's always had, and he did it on the most important stage (the playoffs). He had great chemistry with Dave Bolland and Bryan Bickell and was responsible in all 3 zones. Assuming he doesn't command top 6 money, he'd be great to bring back as well.

3. As good as Patrick Sharp has been at centre over the years, he's much better as a winger. This team sorely lacks a 2nd line centre which should be their top priority going into the off-season.

4. I believe Brian Campbell showed enough in these playoffs that he is now a tradeable asset, regardless of his contract. He played like a top 2 defenseman most games and when it mattered most (game 7), he was the team's best player not named Crawford creating several chances and playing lots of hard minutes. There will never be a time when Campbell will be more enticing to other teams than right after a solid playoff showing, and a trade must be made in order to keep the aforementioned Frolik, Crawford and others comfortably.

5. Another thing that makes Campbell expendable is Nick Leddy's emergence. As a 20 year old, Leddy never seemed rattled and did a good job of playing a simple game and doing all the little things right. He played alongside Duncan Keith without looking out of place, and even looked a little like #2 when he would turn away from checks to make a good breakout pass. He'll be a top 4 dman next season.

6. There alot of good role players who gained valuable experience this season. Guys like Bryan Bickell and Ben Smith played with tons of heart and grit and really showed that they belong.

7. Victor Stalberg on the other hand doesn't seem to be capable of being a consistent scorer at the NHL level, and seems unwilling to be a consistent physical force. He's the one RFA I'd probably let loose.

8. Speaking of guys not reaching their potential, I'll be the first to admit that I was wrong when I said Troy Brouwer could evolve into a top 6 forward at the NHL level. He plays with tons of desire and grit, but I don't think his hand skills and shot are at a high enough level to carry him beyond 3rd or 4th line duty. He's a great depth and energy player though and a real character guy, so I'd still want him on my team any day.

9. If Dave Bolland ever puts together a healthy season, his 3.375 cap hit will seem like a bargain. When healthy, he's a good #2 grade centre playing on the checking line, which is huge for this team because it means that not only can he keep the opposing team's top line in check, but make them play defense instead. the series he had only furthers my opinion that the Hawks made the right choice in keeping him over Byfuglien, Ladd and Versteeg, especially considering their lack of depth at centre.

Arg. I was rooting for you guys hard last night. Unlucky break for campoli. Still great comeback and Crawford rocks

A couple things to add to Andru:
- Marcus Kruger looks to be an intriguing prospect.  Id say hes probably 3rd/4th line material for the next couple of seasons, but he didnt look out of place playing with Toews last night for a few shifts and might warrant second line consideration somewhere down the line.

- As talented as Patrick Kane is, he is never going to become the player he should be.  Wacthing Toews score that shorty to tie the game through use of great skill and even greater determination, it was easy to forget that the reason the Hawks were killing that penalty was because Kane got hit on the boards and got cut near his eye.  Rather than hurry off the ice, he skated extremely slowly across the entire surface of the ice to the Hawk bench... which allowed the Canucks to get an odd man break and forced a gassed Keith to take a penalty to avoid giving up a 2 on 0.  There were so many times during the game where it just looked like Kane was skating away from the puck (to avoid getting hammered by Canuck defensemen?) and was generally uninterested.  In a game full of players going all out, his lack of effort was striking.

hopefully this series will put some hunger back into the guys after it seemed like they lost a bit after winning the Cup.
