I understand your point.

Flyers are "VERY close to tendering a huge offer sheet" to stamkos. Guess we will find out how huge soon enough.

That would be NUTS if the Flyers somehow added Stamkos.  What's your cap space like?
6/28/2011 7:16 PM
Depends. About 6-7 once we sign Simmonds and voracek. Put lappy on ltir, waive Leights. No leino. Really only need 2 forwards to round out the roster.

They can go over the cap remember..... and they have pieces to give up.... Bob and versteeg = $5 mil.

I'm not sure 6M per year is enough for Stamkos.

That's $6 mil + $5 mil from dumping versteeg and Bob. Or $4 mil for dumping hartnell. Or $4 mil for dumping carle. It would not be difficult for the flyers to get creative. $11 mil should certainly get the job done.....especially since TB seems intent on $7.5.

Still. Ill believe it when I see it....

Edit: Carchidi and Eskin reporting Philly to tender huge offer sheet. I doubt they meant $6 mil.... besides like i said the flyers can sign up to 110% of the cap and then sort thongs out. Also, Eklund saying TB is asking about acquiring rights to Talbot.

Too bad..... flyers are apparently putting together a 13-14 year contract between $100-$110 mil.

If that's true, Paul Holmgren should send Steve Yzerman a nice bottle of champagne for saving his job. Just ask the Islanders about 15 year contracts.

No matter how much upside a player has, a deal that long simply makes no sense. It can really cripple a franchise.

I guess the flyers figure why not? They just dumped 11 years at $108 mil (and an $11 mil cap AAV) in Carter (26 yr old) and Richards (26 yr old) .... so why not spend $110 mil (at a $7.85 AAV) for 13-14 years on Stamkos (21 yr old). Sounds like the offer will be sent today.

Ummm...wouldn't they need permission from the Lightning to send him the offer?

no - the league is who the Flyers need permission from.

As of yesterday at 5 EST teams can talk to the agents of RFAs, and tender offersheets as long as the league approves, of which the player can use as leverage in his own negotiations with his current team. The player can't officially accept the offer from another team until July 1st (noon EST, I think)... at that time his current team has 7 days to decide to accept or decline the contract match.

Ahh I didn't know that little wrinkle. Well, good luck with the offer. I just get the feeling that news about it may be overblown because it's all coming out of Philly from what I can tell. It's normal though. it's their job to "sell papers" so to speak. I simply can't imagine TB not matching an offer which would only net them bottom-15 1st round picks, let alone not re-signing him.

Here are this year's critical dates for the off-season for RFA's and UFA's:

June 15 – 30
- League-wide moratorium on new player contracts: Meaning a team cannot re-sign any of their own free agents, restricted or unrestricted, during this period.

- Buy-Out Period (June 15-30) *Clubs with salary arbitration cases [July 20 – Aug 4] have a second opportunity to buy-out contracts. Deadline in those cases is 48 hours after the Club’s last salary arbitration award or settlement.

June 24-25
NHL Entry Draft – St. Paul, MN – Xcel Energy Center

June 27
Deadline for clubs to make qualifying offers to their restricted free agents. Qualifying offers must be received by this date. Players, however, cannot accept those Qualifying Offers officially until July 1. Players have until July 15th to accept their QO. Any impending RFA who does not receive a Qualifying Offer can become an unrestricted free agent if their Club also does not opt for Club-Elected arbitration.

June 28
Impending restricted free agents are free to open talks with any NHL team, including the team holding their rights. However, no official offers can be made, new contracts, offer sheets, etc, until July 1. (This does not apply to players with fewer than three years experience who have received a qualifying offer. In that case, the qualifying offer gives the Club exclusive negotiating rights to a player with less than three years pro experience.)

June 30
Upper/Lower Limits on 2011-12 Salary Cap are set

July 1
Noon eastern: Free agency period begins. (Also the first day the Hawks and Patrick Sharp can begin negotiating a contract extension beyond 2011-12)

July 5
Deadline for Player-Elected Salary Arbitration: 5pm eastern

July 6
Deadline for Club-Elected Salary Arbitration: 5pm eastern

Thanks. I think all of Philly is VERY skeptical that Stammer will 'actually' be in orange and black next season... but it sounds like the Flyers will definitely take a shot at him.

As for TB matching any offers.... TBL is financially fucked by Lecavalier's $10 mil x next 5 seasons, and the large LTCs for St Louis and Malone. TB can fit under the cap - but the organization is apparently already losing $ - will TBs investors approve of taking on more large losses in what is certainly going to be a front-loaded contract to Stamkos ($10-12 mil) or will having 2 1st round picks for the next 4 seasons (at no cost to payroll) be the better investment? Can they unload Vinny's $50 mil contract? St Louis'? Malone's? How much will a Goalie cost? There are a lot of IFs here, wouldn't you agree? Of course with the potential of Stamkos you'd think they would keep him ' at all costs'. However - Its not like players in the past that were deemed 'untradable' or 'the face of the franchise' didn't end up somewhere else for one reason or another.
