1/6 of the way through - an overall record of 77-84 (.481). Was hoping for .500 so I am not that far off. Hoping for a better next 162 games. $70M team in trouble with fatigue. Two teams might be contenders for playoff spots, the others are done.
1/3 of the way through the championship. Overall record of 158-166 (.488), not much of an improvement since the 1/6 mark. I like to evaluate my clubs at the 54 game mark - after playing 1/3 of the season you pretty much know where you stand as far as competitiveness goes.
Here are my teams at this point:
- $ 70M: 31-23, 2nd Place, 1GB
- $ 80M: 28-26, 1st Place, 2GA
- $ 90M: 24-30, 4th Place, 13GB
- $100M: 27-27, 2nd Place, 3GB
- $110M: 19-35, 4th Place, 16GB
- $120M: 29-25, 2nd Place, 5GB
We'll see how things go from here. It appears that four of the six teams have a chance of making the postseason while two are toast. I'm pretty happy with that since my finishes in the this tournament are usually in the 70's and I'd like to realistically move up 12 spots from my last finish. Another goal is to finish the regular season with an overall record of .500 or better. I've hit the mark several times which has been followed with a 1-5 or 2-4 and have not been able to pass the mark. Hoping I can get closer at the halfway point of the season and we'll really know where things are headed.
Well, we are halfway through now. Our overall record is 242-244 (.498) and are hovering near our goal of .500. A quick look at each team:
$70M (Voodoo Child): 43-38 (Home: 18-23, Road: 25-15), 3rd Place, 6GB.
We are dead last with a BA of .252 and 20th in OBP at .326 - Fortunately, we are 2nd in ERA at 3.52 and 1st in WHIP (1.29) along with being 2nd in CG with 10 and lead the league with 5 shutouts. The team is 19-11 in one-run games and has overachieved as our expected winning percentage is .490. Individually, '03 John Smoltz has been remarkable going 19 for 19 in save opportunities while sporting a WHIP of 0.63 over 30 innings.
Second Half Outlook: We're struggling with fatigue and there is no indication that the bats are going to come around. Not likely to make the playoffs but feel that we're still part of the chase.
$80M (.267 BA & 3.02 ERA): 42-39 (Home 25-13, Away 17-26), 2nd Place, 2GB.
Another weak hitting club as we're 21st in the league with a BA of .248 and 22nd in OBP (.304). We are third in steals at 152 at a 73% success rate. Our pitching staff ERA of 4.02 ranks only 15th but our WHIP is 10th at 1.32. Our fielding percentage of .983 places us 4th in the league. This team is also overachieving based on the expected winning percentage of .456 - we are 5 games above that mark; 13-9 in one run games and 6-6 in extra inning games.
Second Half Outlook: I'm keeping my fingers crossed and am going to go against the numbers and say that I believe this team can be a division winner. I only hope I drafted enough innings.
$90M (St. Louis Cardinals 1969-1993): 40-41 (Home: 19-21, Road 21-20), 3rd Place, 13GB.
Team finished the last 15 games with a 12-3 record. Looks like they will tease me into believing that a wild card run might be possible even though we are 4 back. We are 13th in the league with a BA of .263 but are 2nd in SB with 96 (no Vince Coleman on the roster). Our 3.82 ERA places us 10th but our WHIP of 1.26 is 4th overall. We are 9th in fielding percentage (.981) as well. '85 John Tudor is only 8-4 in 22GS but does have a WHIP of 1.02 - the bullpen is killing him. '80 George Hendrick is tied for the ML lead with 71 RBI. Our 7-14 record in the division is awful.
Second Half Outlook: The division race is over, our only hope is a wild card spot. There will be 6-7 teams fighting for that spot making it a long shot. We are hot right now so at least we have that going for us.
$100M (1986 White Sox & 1990 Reds): 42-39 (Home 19-22, Away 23-17), 2nd Place, 1GB.
Another one of my teams that can't hit a lick with a BA of .234 and OBP of .298, both last overall. Pretty pathetic. Our ERA is 3.42 which is 4th in the league and we're 7th in WHIP (1.29). We also lead the league with an OAV of .240 and are 7th in fielding percentage (.982).
Second Half Outlook: We are going to need to start hitting if we are going to stay in the playoff race. We are only 1 GB but the division leader has underachieved. It will be a tough go but hope is alive.
$110M (Call to the Bullpen is Sponsored By): 31-50 (Home 18-23, Away 13-27), 4th Place, 20 GB.
22nd in BA at .254, 21st in OBP .319. 22nd in ERA at 5.58 and 21st in WHIP at 1.59. Just awful. On the bright side we have made the least amount of errors (36) and are tied for the league lead with a fielding percentage of .988.
Second Half Outlook: More gloom and doom. This team alone is killing my chances of finishing with an overall record of .500 - guess I should have went the platoon route here as I had initially planned to do.
$120M (Rolling the Dice): 44-37 (Home 26-14, Away 18-23), 2nd Place, 6 GB.
Another terrible offense, last in the league with a BA of .240 and 23rd in OBP at .311. We are 1st overall in ERA (3.47), WHIP (1.25), and OAV (.225). We're tied for second in fielding percentage at .988. Individually, '95 Greg Maddux has started 18 games and has an ERA of 1.85 and WHIP of 0.93 but has a record of only 8-6. Our division record of 10-11 and one-run games of 13-18 is hurting our performance.
Second Half Outlook: Being six out in the division is going to make it difficult to win the division but since we are only 2GB in the wildcard, I think this team has a solid chance to make the playoffs. It would be sweet if I could do so without using the magic season of 1908 that it seems many teams used.
Overall, I am pleased to be where I am at considering that I haven't played the baseball SIM in a couple of years. We'll see if we can manage to keep up the pace of close to .500 - I will be happy with that. I would love to finish about a dozen slots above my starting rank as well. Realistically, I am outclassed by some amazing owners here and this is my once chance to compete with the best and I really enjoy it - win or lose. Thanks to schwarze for allowing me to be part of it.
