I use the second or third best players from title contending (or winning) squads + 4 or 5 scrubs

will that do?

so who's second best, stockton or mailman?

it would be stockton  - also I intend to use the second best player in the season he was the second best so Shaq in Miami ok but Shaq in Orlando or LA not - or Kobe in the first 3 titles ok but more recently not etc - of course 2nd best could be debateably 3rd best in some cases and contenders will be teams that made it at least to their conference semi-finals (or won 50 games)

and in cases where there may be some debate as to whether a player was a top banana we can let PER decide
