New ABA/NBA Double Season Prog-filled !! Topic

Progressive leagues don't seem to be as popular here as they are in Sim League Baseball, but I'm going to try with a double season  progressive starting with the 1967/68 & 1968/69 seasons, the first two years of the ABA. This is the era of Wilt, Baylor, Robertson, Dave Bing, Earl Monroe etc. The ABA did not start with big stars. Connie Hawkins and Mel Daniels were the biggest stars but in a few seasons they would be joined by Rick Barry, Julius Erving, Artis Gilmore and others. We will progress 2 seasons at a time. Each season you will be able to select which of 2 seasons you want to use for each of your players (assuming they are active both seasons). The first season you may use 1967/68 or 1968/69, the following season 1969/70 or 1970/71 etc. There should be adequate players available.

Rather than managing teams with recent players this is an opportunity to manage teams from an older era.

No rookies, no WW. Trades of players OK and draft picks current season only.

The initial draft will be snake style ABBA ABBA etc. Subsequent drafts will be in inverse order of regular season record, with the tiebreaker being total point differential (points scored less points allowed) with the team with the worse point differential drafting earlier. However, as an anti-tanking provision for the 1st round only there will be a weighted lottery among the 4 teams with the worst record for the first 4 draft positions. The same tiebreaker will be used for these positions.

Since this is a progressive I do request that you not sign up unless you expect to be able to particpate for at least 5 seasons.

I don't have time to type a ton about it but I am tentatively interested if this gets going despite some worries I have about:

A. minutes - I'm not sure the pool is big enough without some scrubs/and or rookies
B. I would prefer some ability to trade draft picks. Even if it is just current season draft picks.

I would be amenable to including ability to trade current season draft picks. I have seen some abuses in trading future draft picks in Sim League Baseball which has caused some problems there.

I would not be opposed to including some rookies as well I guess. I haven't had enough experience with rookies in this sim to know how useful they are. I would hope they can't be keepers ?

nah, they cant, they can just soak up some minutes.

Would have to draft a few teams and see what the minutes look like.

You can have admin reset all the rookies to 1-1-1-A.

They can play a ton of minutes, but will be horrible.

Your other option would be to choose horrible players with good minutes from the 1950s.

I think my preference would be to use rookies as suggested by ncih.

I counted 257 players in the WIS database (still need to verify that count) and we would need 288, so we wouldn't need a lot of rookies. In Sim League Baseball we use $200k scrubs to fill out the roster and then replace them with AAA players-is there a similar procedure here or can you draft rookies directly onto the team ?

I would definitely be interested if you can get this going.

I share logain's question/concern about whether there's enough juice in the player pool to start this early, but if it can work then that's great.  The straightforward progressive leagues I've been aware of have started at 70/71, I think...

Remember it's not really a question of number of players so much as it is overall volume of player minutes to go around.  I've been in the EBKL progressive league since the 78-79 season (we're now at 93-94), and we were well into the 80s before teams were noticeably less dependent on 1-1-1-A rookies.

Sounds like the "rookie" system is roughly comparable to the baseball version.  You draft 12 actual players, and then the sim generates a reserve squad of three dreadful make-believe players that you use as necessary to spell fatigued players and fill in the minutes gaps.

I'm pretty sure the shortfall of 29 players would need to be filled by actual players in the database.  You don't get the sim-generated "rookies" until your team is entered, and you can't enter your team without a full roster of 12 players.

For the first several seasons, since there weren't enough real-life players from a given season to populate 24 12-player teams, the EBKL league allowed owners who were short to draft players from the 50s.  I forget what the restrictions...a low cap on salary and/or minutes so you couldn't use that capability as a loophole to add actually useful players to your team.  You generally ended up with pretty bad, ancient scrubs that were just minutes-fillers.

I am considering changing the rules to allow every team to draft 2 1950's players with a salary cap of $1 million each not to be keepers.

Something like that would make sense.  We should know after one season whether those are the right thresholds.

dspahlinger, how about adding the number of owners signed up to the thread title so people can see this one is getting some nibbles?
