We should've went with players who played in the last 4 decades cuz I can't effectively evaluate these oldies but goodies! Players from the 1980-2010 seasons are ideal for us to all evaluate effectively!

Love the SG position discussion but we left off 3 greats that are still playin, well they played SG/SF during their career. Iverson was definately a SG but on certain teams could be a great point also. I can't see him matching up against alot of the SG's in this draft so you would need a PG who could guard 2's. Iverson was a wanderer on D which was a problem at times but he could also get some steals for you.

There is one player I can't believe is still available who was way better than his stats reveal. If he played his career on a team where he was the #1 option he would've easily avg'd 25-30 ppg. He was unguardable at his position! Food for thought

Regarding length of career, I agree with snydpie that it needs to be taken into consideration.  A short career can ruin a franchise rather than help it, whereas 7+ years can turn one around.    Just needs to be considered.

Also on that note, how the he** did Russell and Wilt put up those huge minutes without getting injured back then?  Less practice?  Was Iverson on to something?  Perhaps the bulking up that centers do now (using god knows what) is the cause of problems?

Totally agree peak and longevity should be considered

Most impressive stat I've ever seen about Wilt:

His career average for minutes per game was 45.8 minutes a game.

45.8!!

That means he, over the entire course of his career (including old age) took off 2.2 mpg.  2.2!!!!!

People forget that when they talk about these all-time discussions.  Would you rather have 36 minutes of Hakeem or 46 of Wilt?  If you're talking 36 of either, then it's closer.  But I'll take 4 quarters of Wilt over 3 of Hakeem.

I know that really makes it hard to compare eras. Hockey is the same guys in the 20s played the entire game pretty much.

and that's what makes his "never fouled out" stat that much more incredible.  Although I believe it had to have hurt his defensive play if he was making a concerted effort not to foul at all times.  Often fouls are good things.

Since this has been great fun Im gonna try to start a 5 season sim draft league using any players who played at least one or more seasons during the last 4 decades 1980-2010 seasons. Choose any season for each player even if it dates back before the 1980 season although you must use 5 different season for each player each season. There will only be one draft so you must draft players who played at least 5 seasons. There will definately be some strategy involved.

The draft order will be a snake style the 1st 2 rounds with the 3rd round going in the same order as the 2nd and then snake style the rest of the draft. No rookies, no clones, highest cap needed. Play with who you brought!

Lets see who can build the most championships in 5 seasons with modern players!

yea....i do love the fact ill be playing wilt 45-48 a night....its an incredible feat but  i just wanna throw out there that the game is more physical today and coaches got tighter with minutes...also wilt and russell never had to deal with high pick and rolls from insanely quick point guards...the game wasnt as spaced backed then

Nobody came close to Wilt, though.

All time list is pretty impressive:

1. Wilt Chamberlain* 45.80
2. Bill Russell* 42.29
3. Oscar Robertson* 42.20
4. Allen Iverson 41.12
5. LeBron James 40.15
6. Elgin Baylor* 40.03
7. Jerry West* 39.24
8. Jerry Lucas* 38.76
9. Bob Pettit* 38.75
10. Latrell Sprewell 38.63

First of all, this is going really slowly.  Is everyone sitemailing ahead?  I wouldn't mind putting the rest of the rounds on a clock so that the threat of being skipped helps us pick up the pace.

Second, what's with all the mention of players not yet drafted?

Third, I could care less about the coach round if it's just for shucks and giggles, but I don't care for the idea of factoring coach of choice into team strength.  I'd just as soon let it be all about the players.  Just my opinion.

Well over 4 days since I last picked.  Makes it hard to keep interest / enthusiam.  All the good discussion has helped, but there really should be some sort of schedule for things like this, to ensure they keep moving and hopefully finish.

Sorry, just had to vent a little of the frustration.  Still think the Walton pick in this format was horrible though.  (One season where he averaged playing over half a game.)

I agree about a schedule. This is painfully slow.

Oh yeah, that list is very telling. Makes guys like AI and Spre seem more impressive as well. LeBron's average will surely go down over the next decade.

In the meantime, I'll amuse myself with some unsolicited, half-baked commentaries on the teams-in-progress, starting with these first two.

empdenied:  Michael Jordan, Dennis Rodman, Robert Parish

I can’t argue with the Jordan pick.  He played with a combination of skill, confidence and competitive fire that I’ve never seen before.  Kobe comes close at times.  Magic and Bird had the confidence and fire, but different and somewhat less skill.  Rodman makes sense here.  Even though this isn’t sim-land and his minutes were limited in most of his peak seasons, he was arguably the best rebounder ever and one of the best defenders of his day.  A fine compliment to a do-it-all superstar like Jordan.  I’m indifferent to the Parish pick.  His consistency and longevity make sense for this league format, but his peak wasn’t very high given where he was selected and higher-impact centers are still on the board.  This team needs a lot still (number two scorer, a playmaker, some shooting…).

malone9975:  Chris Paul, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale
I’m liking this squad so far.  Explosive, creative scoring with Paul’s penetration, Bird’s open floor wizardry and McHale’s innovations in the paint.  These guys are all smart and selfless enough to play to each other’s strengths.  All of them are good to great team defenders in their primes.  The offense is largely taken care of.  It should be all high-level role players from here on out.  (I can think of some available centers who would be awesome fits, and there’s no shortage of shooting guards with the right skills to plug in with this crew.)
