New Mock Draft Forum-draft starts NOW Topic

Hondo and Walton both raise the question of what we're drafting for and what we'll be voting on.  If this is just a straightforward question of career accomplishments, then the task becomes a lot more straightforward and we should all be angling for guys with rings, trophies, awards, records, etc.  Mikan should have gone in the first round, and Cousy should be gone by now, too.  Personally I'm trying to think through how my team would compete on the floor against everyone else's team, cutting some slack (but not too much) to players of earlier eras.  For example, I absolutely think Baylor and Havlicek would perform at a high level, and I assume they'd be very coachable and adjust well and put up nice stats.  I'm not assuming they'd shoot a lot better than they actually did, though.

And I'm totally down with the argument for taking Walton.  At his best, he was amazing.  If we're really looking at a 10-year window for competing for a title, figure Walton has a shot at being the difference-maker in one or two of those years.  That's not bad for a third-round pick.

sappy:  Kevin Garnett, Bob Pettit, Bill Russell
The intention to play Garnett at SF should generate some debate.  KG did play the 3 spot very early in his career and certainly could defend at a high level all along the front line for years and years.  He’s a great choice for this league, and I think it’s a defensible choice to put him at SF but maybe not the best move because of what he doesn’t bring to the position.  sappy does have generally great defense and great rebounding.  This slender bunch will get muscled by the big behemoths of the league, but they also have a shot at wearing them down with ridiculously active, smart D.  Pettit will be a good rebounder and smart all-around player in this league, and can help space the floor with his outside shooter.  Again, efficiency is a bit of an issue for this old-timer but perhaps less than with Baylor.  I don’t really see a top-notch post-up game on this team.  We’ll have to see who’s available to fill the backcourt before knowing what this team’s trajectory is.

ashamael:  Walt Frazier, Dwayne Wade, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Kareem and Wade were both great picks, and Frazier/Wade is a dynamic, highly skilled and unpredictable tandem in the backcourt although I might have expected ash to pick more of a shooter to pair with Wade.  This team has lots of flexibility with the next couple picks, although I definitely have some opinions about what it needs.  Like malone, ash is basically working in the margins now to address gaps.  A strong core is in place, and this is one of my favorite squads so far.

longtallbrad:  Clyde Drexler, Scottie Pippen Shaquille O'Neal

Shaq was an easy decision, and while I looked at lots of alternatives in the second and third rounds I’m very happy with how these three fit.  Defense ranges from good to amazing, with Pippen providing huge flexibility on that end of the floor.  Possibly only two players (Wilt and Artis) can afford to go directly at Shaq physically, and he’s mobile and athletic to run and slide with guys much smaller than him.  I’m on a good course with scoring, rebounding and passing, but need more shooting and probably a blue collar banger to play alongside the big guy.

Didn't want to get the clock involved in this draft cuz I wanted it to go in order so that there wouldn't be unfair draft picks and I don't like hearing the excuses for teams drafteing poorly by blaming the clock. I am dissapointed in the lackluster effort to draft players. I thought it would go quickly and smoothly but it hasn't. If we go on the clock I don't like 1/2 hour intervals but I guess I can live with 1 hour intervals.

Alonzo Mourning he's tought enough to go up against most of the centers in this league playing against shaq, hakeem, ewing and others i would pick most of his early years. can u guys tell me if this was a decent pick just new i needed a center and i thought of him dont have a lot of time so not posting achivments
8/16/2011 6:23 PM
Was considering mourning too. Great defender.
8/16/2011 6:29 PM
really torn in 3 directions here, sure none of my other options will make it back but...

I have 2 guard spots open, Lebron is my primary playmaker but I need

A. a 3 point shooter
B. someone who can get and make his own shot
C. A clutch shooter cause I sure don't want Lebron taking last second jumpers
D. some championship moxy
E. A physical defender to deal with guys like Kobe and MJ
F. A secondary playmaker

Paul Pierce does all of this

8/16/2011 6:51 PM
Chris Mullin

I need a very durable guy to play in the paint since I took Walton last round. In fact, I probably need a couple quality bigs. But when Walton is healthy I need this guy to stay out of the way on offense but be a force on defense all the time. Also, I need more rebounding on this squad. I love Isiah but he doesn't really board at his size and Kobe is not the greatest rebounder either.

Thus Dikembe Mutombo makes since for me.

Not a guy that demands the ball though he can score on offensive rebounds.

8 time All star
4 time defensive player of the year
2nd leading shot blocker in nba history

led the league in rebounding 4 times
Good FG% when he does shoot
Played almost 37000 minutes - 41st all time in the nba
Memorable playoff performances!
Finger wagging!

should be noted that without any official ruling by snydpie and no sitemail to inform people we are NOT on that schedule posted above

sob I was wanting to add Pierce to my squad.  Exactly who I was looking for.

I like my Frazier/Wade dynamic... I wanted kind of an old school backcourt with two guards that can ideally play either position on either offense or defense.  They can guard big guards, little guards, strong guards & burners.  I wanted to add Pierce for pretty much every reason hobbit listed.  Oh well!
8/16/2011 9:39 PM
I was looking at Pierce as well. He's really a solid choice. Alot of these teams are looking good (literally, see my pics thread!). The one I worry about is xxevil - McAdoo is not that imposing in the paint and Stockton, Miller and Mulling are going to get abused on the perimeter.
