Jerry Lucas
3 time NBA first team
Averaged over 20 rebounds in two seasons (only 4 players ever averaged more than 20 rebounds in a season)
4th on all time rebounds per game list
Nice.  About time for Jerry.  I considered taking him over Kemp in the fourth round.  I also looked hard at one other guy still on the board.

I thought he was already gone or I would have picked him.  Oops.

Vinsanity.

He may come off the bench in a Manu type of role.

If Manu forgot to play defense of course...

not liking this pick after all.  Oh well

2x 1st team all ABA

1st team all NBA

5x All-Star

ABA Champion – Finals MVP

Hall of Fame Member

22000 Minutes in the ABA and NBA (that’s enough longevity for me)

“The Hawk” – Connie Hawkins

I picked this guy for several reasons. First, I needed a forward. In a modern game at 6’8 215- Hawkins would play the 3 and 4 (he actually played 4/5 in his career). I was looking for a lot of things in this spot and in the end Hawkins overwhelmed me with his talent and versatility. He was maybe the first guy that could play 1-5 on the court. He had amazing moves around the basket – GIANT HANDS . Some of the stuff he could do with the ball was unreal. He’s a solid rebounder and great slasher also. Too quick to be covered by 4’s and can post up most 3’s. He’s also a very good passer and has a pretty solid jumpshot when it’s on.  Hawkins probably wasted most of his athletic prime playing for the Globe Trotters but years he had in the ABA and NBA are enough to convince me he is a greater basketball talent than 90% of the people in this draft. “Dr. J with a jumpshot.”

For my team in particular, I will start Hawkins at the 3. He will be my 2nd/3rd scorer on the team and he is fine with that role as evidenced in his days in Phoenix.  When Walton is out – Hawkins can slide to the 4 and still give me rebounding and some shotblocking.  Depending on what I do with the rest of my picks I could even see lineups with he and Kobe in the backcourt. Not a great defender but everyone else on my squad is top notch so that should be ok. Again, not a 3 point bomber but he has a solid jumper. And finally – I think he’s going to be great for Kobe. Having a guy with this much talent on the squad is going to push Kobe to be even better. And, both of them are a bit streaky.. when Kobe is off – Hawkins has the ability to drop 30-40 to make up for it.

When Bill Russell picked all-time all-pro team, The Hawk was on his second-five selection.  "If he hadn't got such a bad deal," Russell remarked, "you would mention Hawkins with Baylor and Pettit."

The chief wrinkle in my team right now is the lack of a full-time deep threat.  Scottie and Glide starting putting up threes with reasonable efficiency as their games matured, but I'll need a marksman or two coming off the bench.

That's going to be the chief weakness of most teams here.  Let's face it... not many of the all-time greats were bombers.  The ones that were traditionally have terrible holes in their games (Ray & Reggie - defense?).

If you look at some of the greatest teams in history, they weren't built around having a bomber always out there... but they did bring sharpshooters off the bench when needed (Hodges, Armstrong on the first 3 bulls title teams, kerr on the 2nd set.  Fisher started on those Laker teams but was not a 35mpg player; The 80s teams didn't really utilize the three very much as the game was faster and relied more on transition than halfcourt spacing).
That was exactly my thinking.  I looked hard at three other, more recent players who were good to great long-range shooters, but all were mediocre defenders and one was a reckless chucker at times.
Carter was a weak defensive player and he isn't a team player!  You don't think Carter was a mediocre defender and a reckless chucker ltb? Great athlete and shooter but.....

I need a SG with shooting range and this guy was the greatest shooter with the best shooting range ever. He could also run the point with his flamboyant ball handlin skills and incredible passing ability and was incredible in the open court or half court. He is the perfect compliment to my team also giving me flexibility with my next 3 picks. He gives me incredible shooting, passing, scoring, and he was a solid defensive player with length who got alot of steals. A 50 greatest player who knocks down shots comin out the locker room with ease.

The Most Flamboyant Player Ever:

Pistol Pete Maravic

Most Flamboyant Player Ever.  Yeah I see that.  Especially if you consider a world without Dennis Rodman, but I guess you would only know about that if you followed the Detroit Pistons...oh wait you are a Rockets and Pistons fan..hmm.  Charles Barkley was kinda flamboyant.  So was John Amaechi for an entirely different reason.  There is a better SG on the board though.  Much better.
I grew up in MI and moved to Houston at 22 and the Pistons won their 2 when I was in MI and Hou won their 2 when I was in Hou so yes I am a fan of both is that a problem? Maravic is top 50 and Vince wouldn't even get considerations. Nique was better than Vince and he got passed up!

I don't think either of those is the guy he was talking about. Imo the 4th best sg ever is still on the board

This was my main thinking in taking Billups.  It's a beautiful thing to see him take over a game from beyond the arc.  He is not typically guarded by the best defenders as he is not the primary scoring threat.

I needed a shooter to open things up for Dream in the post and Worthy who can slice a defense apart especially with a long distance marksman like Pistol who is also an incredible passer and another precision passer like Kidd. Maravic opens up everything for this excellent offense and there's more to come. Everyone in my starting lineup can score the ball and I have some great passers to make them even better! I don't have any players you can cheat off of but there are some horrible shooters on other teams that will allow Dream & Ewing to sag and protect the basket.

Are we going 8 rounds?  this will take another week.
I think to even out things we should go 2 players next round and 1 the final round.  Just a thought.

Not going to a schedule was a bad move.  This is just for fun and at this point, we are prolly not all seeking the same guy.  I could care less about getting skipped at this point.  There is not $10 riding on it ya know?  Let's get this rolling before we croak of old age.
