If we could force players to be played at listed position that would make this a bit easier. A terrible rebounding pf can be hidden at sf if he is say 97% there

This is a good point by Logain.  Think we need to do this

Just to clarify a bit.. I believe it would make for a better process but do not neccessarily support that rule. I would not want to try enforce such a rule with the goofy substitution logic etc. I was just kind of musing out loud in regret.for me I looked for players that had bad enough %s that you would not want to play them out of position... which limits the pool.

Well yeah true, if they play a few mins out of position fine.  But they should at the very least start at their real position and play the majority of minutes there.  We should do this IMO.  But this is LTB call....

pretty soon, we're gonna start seeing a boatload of players from the 50's and 60's, or players like cunningham and mark eaton, and bol who could qualify as sim poison, but who you also see in open and theme leagues.

personally, the terrible stats don't always define sim poison, nor do subjective methods like "unlucky". wish there was a better way to decide who gets put into the pool. look at a player like baron davis. bad fg%, bad t.o.'s, etc. but the dude gets drafted a lot.

I think logain makes a reasonable case for allowing the 84-85 Wilkins on the list, given that we're creating a pool of 48..  I still consider him borderline, and am happy to leave the subject open for a bit more debate.

And I agree, scud, there isn't a perfect way to define "sim poison."  That strong subjective element is one of the things that I thought might make this league entertaining...trying to figure out and agree on who qualifies.  Really, the driving consideration should be sticking an opposing owner with a player they shouldn't want.

What players would be considered "unlucky"?
I don't know. Some people say they just never get what they should out of such and such player.
Usually that means they aren't building the team correctly.

Agreed.  It's easy to build a team around someone and be like - oh, well, that team sucked and that player let me down - when, in reality, you let that player down by surrounding him with the wrong players.

IMO, sim poison means player-seasons that would prevent you from having a legit shot at a championship (if the other owners didn't have to use those players).

A poison, to me, is someone who severely hurts you in the shooting struggle, the possession battle or in the fouling game.  The worst poisons hurts you in all 3.  Most poisons hurt you really bad in one and somewhat in another.  They don't ever really help you somewhere... Take McGinnis, for example.  Yeah, he gives you some boards... but holy crap look at the TOs.  We're not talking Wilt TOs, either, where the boards & efg% and (lack of) fouls totally eclipse the TOs, we're talking TOs that eclipse everything.  Oh and then fouls.  Fouls galore!

Elgin Baylor is someone who is borderline poison.  Yeah, his high usage and mediocre fg% hurt you - a lot.  But if you play him at SG - or even PG - his rebounding prowess is huge.  You think he turns the ball over a lot, but when you really focus on the actual %s, he doesn't.  He moderately hurts you in one area, but really, really helps you in another.  A player like this will be a superstar find in this type of league.  I think 'Nique is a case like this, only not quite as extreme.

Thanks for keeping the debate spicy, ash.  Love to have you in this league.

I'll think about it.  Have several leagues (both draft leagues, the EOL, two progressives & an OL challenge I'm about to do with nc) going at once and am trying to keep my own theme from dying (not looking good - I've needed 4 for about 3 weeks)... tough to join all the leagues I want to join =/

no way nique makes the list. there is one season that i use often... 29 ppg, 31% usage, 108-3-s, 50efg%, over 6 mil, lots of fta's at an 80% rate, low t.o.'s and fouls.

oh, i forgot, we are designating specific seasons.

Yeah I meant the specific season.  That one you're talking about (92-93, maybe?) is actually really beastly.

I think it would be cool if we had a draft league where 1 round was poison pill players.
