16x16 v20, Group 2 Draft Topic

Finishing off with:

1923 Perkins
1923 Thurston (White Sox partial)
1929 Malone

Had to recalculate everything when schwarze took the 1923 STL Browns Thurston with Ken Williams attached.

Great fun as always

And...  I am in for the 12x12

LOL, njbigwig - Willie Hernandez is not part of the wrinkle.  It will make you think in a different way as you draft, though (teaser)...

Wow, calhoop - never realized how close I was to losing Ken Williams.  Whew...

calhoop - can't wait to see how you resolved those picks. Hornsby/E Collins &, Hack Wilson to go with Gibson, King Felix, Kershaw and Chandler somehow balanced against Malone, Thurston and Gordon..

Only teammate I got out of this threesome was 1929 Riggs Stephenson.  Already using much cheaper 1923 Hornsby (will have to make use of Gordon to a degree).

Team name should indicate a lot.

Don't forget, I have to hope for the best with 211 mandatory innings of Ray Washburn to go along with the 4 SPs you mentioned (all rostered).

Always a great experience with these drafts.  Good luck and have fun!!

The Hornsby - Fatboydad Dilemma:

Halfway through this draft, I was not happy with the way my prospects looked. I seemed to always be chasing the last available good version of players (Hernandez in round 2, Karsay in round 5 and Dibble in round 6). Then the 1927 and 1928 Muellers were taken at the end of round 7 and with them the relatively affordable Hornsbys. I was then faced by the Hornsby - Fatboydad dilemma.

With Fatboydad and I being the last 2 to need Mueller and the 1922 Mueller (and the $12.5M Hornsby) still left, could I fit him in my lineup? Was Fatboydad (who seemed to have a lot of cap space and always picking ahead of me) trying to do the same? The next several rounds were a roller coaster ride: in round 8, Fatboydad takes a $2.4M Washburn (apparently he not interested) and I take the only semi-usable Malone who now has to be full member of my rotation. In round 9, Fatboydad takes the $2.4M Gordon (damn, he's trying for Hornsby) and I take the $200K Williams (who I need to have any chance of fitting Hornsby in). I'm now sure he's going to screw me in round 10 but surprises me with a Verlander pick. I now take the 1922 Mueller and pray that Slainte and Marlowe don't screw me by taking the $800K and $1.8M Lamabe. They both pass and I become the proud owner of the 1922 Hornsby. The Hornsby - Fatboydad dilemma has been resolved favorably.

These drafts make me neurotic (but count me in for the 12x12)

Great story pedrocerrano...

Here is my story....

I knew right away that there were not very many usable versions of the draftable players, so my goal was to get as many as possible (I was drafting last each round anyway).  I would figure out my teammate slots once I could better evaluate my team salary and positional needs.  I was already ahead of the curve by nominating (and rostering) the best versions of Gordon and Verlander.  So I quickly went after Felix, Hanley, Dibble and was fortunate to draft the only full season of Jay Payton (which is not terrible) and who brings along a stud version of Todd Helton (I replaced M.Cabrera with Helton as my 1B).  Lamabe (1.11 whip) was the last usable player I drafted.  The rest of my picks were either to get a teammate or to save salary.  I grabbed 15 Napoli to save money (and he can pinch hit).  Then came 28 Mueller, for which I was planning on using Hornsby out of position at 3B.  '66 Washburn got me Bob Gibson's second best season (to go along with '42 Tiny Bonham, Verlander & Hernandez as my starting staff).  I should've taken the 200K Williams there though.  I instead grabbed the cheapest Perkins available and quickly realized I was not going to be able to afford Hornsby unless I shorted myself good innings (which meant having to use the Sloppy/Malone crap).  Since I wasn't going to get Hornsby, I had to get Ken Williams and grabbed '23 Thurston.  The rest of my picks were pretty much the cheapest guys available (well, I spent 400K more on Malone than I had to - since the '34 version was way better than the '33 version and I had some extra cap space).

My lineup looks like this...

C: 2011 Alex Avila  (Verlander)       .295, .389, .506  (A/A+/B)
1B: 2003 Todd Helton (Payton)       .358, .458, .630  (B/B)

RP: 2009 Jarrod Washburn (Hernandez) 133 IP, 1.07 whip, 0.74 hr/9

I think the two best picks in the draft actually went #1 and #2 overall.  Had I picked first, I absolutely would've taken '09 Sandoval and if picking second and he was gone, I would've taken that only remaining cheap version of Malone.

Look like my pitching is comparable to schwarze,  but my offense is poor, thanks to using full time versions of Perkins, Napoli, and Sandoval.

Payton will spell for Ramirez (with a wild shift that includes Gordon moving to short and Hornsby coming in out of the OF to play 2B).  Clark is a PH.  I shouldn't need much Sloppy-Joe innings, but if I do I have some low HR/9 versions that shouldn't fair too poorly.
