Say someone has Mark McGwire and his career is over. If you have the 1990 Cubs with the number one overall pick and another owner has the 1998 Brewers with the second pick you can take Big Mac but if you pass on him the 1998 Brewers can draft him.
You can draft any available player at any point in their career. You are not restricted to rookies. This draft and future drafts will have a draft order

But aren't you restricted to picking a player from the same season in his career as your tream?    For example, if you are the 1964 Cardinals and you draft Roger Maris, don't you have to draft the 1964 Maris or can you draft the 1961 Maris instead?

You draft from the season your team is in.  So, in your example, you'd have to take '64 Maris

Correct.  You would have 1964 Maris.  Anyone else have any questions let us know.

Sent him a few sitemails. He joined pretty early. If I don't hear from him soon we will go to the waitlist.

Okay, here's a question on a possibly crazy situation.  I have Tony Lazzeri with the 1936 Yankees.  His final season is 1937.  Let's say I get an upgrade for him in the draft this year or next and I trade him during either of those two years to the 1925 Yankees.  For the 1926 Yankees he is in his final season of 1937, but in the following he begins his rookie season with the 1927 Yankees.  Does his "new" team keep him or once he "retires" is he required to be sent back in the draft pool?   I am not saying this is going to happen, but am posing the "what if?" because it would be a possibility in this league.  Granted, few opportunities such as this one would exist, but here is one instance where it could and if it did happen.....?

He would go back into the draft poll. Once a player is cut or retired he goes back into the draft pool and can be picked up at any point. I think the best example is Ty Cobb right now with jfrancos A's team. Also no one has dibs on a player once he goes back in the draft pool if he actually appears on your teams progression. With teams advancing in years and player overlaps some owners might keep a guy so he wouldn't go back and start with a new team. Makes an interesting twist when we do future drafts.

That's also why there still is a draft order for each year based on final standings. Teams also have to give advanced notice if they plan on changing teams. A one year notice is needed. If you want to change teams in year three you have to announce it before the year two draft.

Your answer raises a question for me.  I thought that once we had our player rosters, those were the players who we have the chance to keep and advance through the years and that we can't automatically get any players who were on that team the next year.  So, for example, I have the '85 Mets.  My assumption is that I have those players and the rest of their careers (until cut, retired, etc.), but that I wouldn't be able to get Kevin Mitchell just because he was on the '86 Mets.  I would have to draft him in the 2nd year  draft for our league.  Is that right?

I was pretty sure that was the case, otherwise you could keep trading a player like Greg Maddux back to an earlier franchise and have him end up breaking Cy Young's record for wins or have the Babe get to a thousand home runs.

Yes you would keep your 85 Mets and then would try to get in the draft Kevin Mitchell next year. Once you have a player you control his destiny until he retires.

The taint said he posted his keepers yesterday. Don't see them and asked him where they are. Almost ready to go.
