That raises an interesting question- can we loan money to be paid back the following year at, say, a 50% interest rate?

My thoughts would be loaning would be a no go but trading money would work.

Just trying to think what happens if a team goes bankrupt?

They'd get a bailout from the US government.  Duh.
10/22/2010 11:28 PM
Bummer . . . no new units come up until Monday.
10/22/2010 11:29 PM
Yeah, after what just happened to the US economy, maybe loans aren't the best idea right now.

Seriously though, loans seem complicated and might wreck havoc with league balance. I mean, you could easily loan someone money to purchase one year wonders on some big WS push and be paid back with the cash they make from playoff earnings. Kind of ruins the integrity of the theme.

On the other hand, cash deals as part of regular trades are allowed. So if anyone wants to purchase the talents of John Burkett and his great '01 season, let's talk some numbers! Help buy me a 2000 World Series trophy!

Yeah, the primary goal should be to avoid a situation where the league becomes an irreversible clusterfuck.

Do we have the green light to start trading, or are we going to wait to fill out our units?

I'm gonna say we wait until the league starts.  That doesn't mean negotiations between owners can't occur.  Remember, during the season, only player-for-player deals may take place.   As for loans, that's a resounding no.  It leads to problems in the board game and I forsee a whole host of problems if I allow it here.  CT laid out in the rules what happens if you run out of money in the initial draft.  After that, if it's not in your pocket, you can't spend it.

On another note, I had inadvertently awarded a unit (BAL-C/DH) to teal_leo when beirnej1 had actually placed the highest bid.  Beirnej1's bid has now been recognized by the league as the winning bid as has been awarded the unit.  The league office apologizes for any inconvienence.

The league rules say, "Picks and/or Players may be traded freely or sold outright to owners that still have funds available." I thought that if I wanted to pick up an extra pick for $xM, I should be able to do that if an owner gets strapped and in a bidding war.

Are we still throwing a GC in the pot with the prize going to he with the most cash at the end?

jonas:  I went back and read the rules again and you are correct.  I will set up a trade thread.  Deanod:  yes we are.  I am also planning to set up a thread to post confrmation from WIS that you have indeed purchased the GC.

Cubs' SP for $6M might be the best value yet- Wood and Lieber have a few pretty good seasons and Tapani and Valdez provide some decent filler.

I think I concur...

Had that one marked on my sheet . . . but the temptation to go after some of the rotations at the end of the alphabet was too strong.  I have a feeling some of us are going to be sorely disappointed . . .
