Sorry, abf, no it's not.  I see by your record you've never played HBD.  In HBD if one team offers a trade and the other team accepts it, it is then binding.  There is no option for the inital offering team to say, "No, wait, I've changed my mind".  Come to think of it, SIM trades are done that way too.  So I don't see how you can argue that WIS does trades that way.

I explained in a sitemail why I'm not accepting the first half of your argument either.  I understand that it would likely not hold up in a court of law, but I'm not letting you screw the other owner out because he was trying to give you a way out in beirnej1 took your guy.

From the rules thread:

Trades

The term "Trade" includes buying and selling of players as well as swapping of players.  There is a forum thread set up for trades and trade talk.

During the season, only player swaps may take place- players cannot be bought /sold and money may not be included in a player swap.  An in-season trade should be conducted using the WIS trade screen from the GM menu, not the forums.  All trades in-season will be subject to the normal WIS veto process.  See the rules labeled "Rosters" for the rules regarding trades made with a player on IR involved.

During the offseason, players may be bought/sold and cash may be included in a player trade.  Offseason trades must be posted in the trade forum and confirmed by both parties in order to be valid.  After both parties confirm, the trade will be completed after 24 hours (to allow the league time to review the trade) unless the league can show reason as to why the trade should not be completed.  All arguments as to why a trade should not be allowed to go through should be directed to the commissioner.  It is within the commissioner's discretion to decide whether a stated reason is indeed valid and how many votes to veto a trade is enough to stop a deal from proceeding.

How does HBD have anything to do with this? This is a SIM league and every trade in the history of WIS is posted on a trade thread and confirmed by both parties. I'm not even sure why you're involved in this matter at this point.

But this point must be made: my inquiry, gauging the interest of magrace trading this pick, still isn't even an official offer until AFTER bernie makes his pick! What happens if Bierne took Rafael Palmeiro? Am I stuck selecting someone else if he's off the board, even though the deal was conditional on his availability in the first place? How can you post that the deal is done when the conditions haven't even materialized?

Are you in this league, knee?

I would agree with abf and knee. A trade isn't final until both parties confirmed it in the trade thread. I've been burned by such things in the past.

I received proof of an offer and of acceptance.  I'm not sure how that's not enough.

What does HBD have to do with this?  You said "that's not how WIS does it".  HBD is part of WIS.

gumbercules - I understand your point of view here but the league rules are pretty clear that both owners have to confirm in the trade thread.

OK, so you want an owner to propose a deal, have it accepted, have proof of the deal offered to the commish, and then allow the owner to back out because he received a better deal?  Based on a technicality?  If that's the case, you'd better explain it to magracefan.  Good luck.

I agree completely. The rules specifically say that the the trade has to confirmed by both parties in the trade thread to be valid. At this point neither trade has been confirmed by both parties so neither is valid until beirnej5 comes by to confirm the deal that abf posted.

So offering a deal isn't enough?  So all deals are essentially, "I'll make you an offer and if you accept it, I reserve the right to change my mind"?  To all you SIM or HBD players, try doing that.  Submit a trade to someone else and send WIS a ticket afterward and say, "Well, I offered the deal and someone accepted, but then I changed my mind because someone offered me a better deal.  How do I undo the first one"?  Tell me what happens.

Technically, according to the rules I have posted, you may be right.  But I know in my heart of hearts it isn't.  He's reneging just because he got a better deal.  If you don't want a trade accepted, don't offer it.

Yes, if the rules specifically state that it has to be confirmed by both owners in the trade thread then that's what needs to be done.

I had a deal in the Team Icon that was proposed to me, I accepted and the original owner posted it on the trade thread. I was on my way home so not available to post confirmation (or proof of the original post by the other guy.) During that time a pick was made just ahead of my slot taking a player that the other trade party wanted. He then deleted his post in the trade thread and I was left holding the bag. It sucks, but the rules are extremely clear on what has to take place, and that hasn't happened yet.

If you propose a trade in the middle of the season to two different people by the trade mechanic in game and one of the other parties accepts, then yes, the first one to click the accept button gets the trade. In the off season however, sitemails are just negotiations and nothing is final until posted in the trade thread.

It's like in real MLB, having a phone discussion about a trade isn't a final offer, only when the commish gets a piece of paper signed by both parties is it finalized. In this case that paper is a post and confirmation in the trade thread.

Why do both teams have to confirm?  So that people can't just make crap up.  I could post tomorrow, "Crazyjoe02 trades me Cy Young, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig for Yoyo Bumchuck, One-Eyed Willie, Pegleg Pete and Mother Teresa".  If I can't offer proof of a deal being accepted, then it shouldn't go through.  I have proof that a deal was agreed to by both parties.  Again, you're looking at the letter of the rule rather than the reason for it and the spirit of the rule.
