Frozen In Time92-93REDRAFT! FULL(pre-draft phase) Topic

Not that this matters since we're doing a full on fantas draft, but here are the Teams/Arenas available:

Montreal
Buffalo
Washington
San Jose
Chicago
Tampa Bay

I also could be talked into surrendering the Whale and taking whichever is the least desirable team.  All I ask is that you go out and recruit someone to join the league.

Give me Montreal, they won the cup in 1993.

While giving some thought last night to how the draft might play out, it occured to me the one place we'll be thin for depth is G, since there were 24 NHL teams in the season we are using, including some very bad expansion teams.  While this will make filling out our bottom 6 and benches challenging in a good way, some teams could get royally screwed over in net.

My first thought on how to balance this would be a rule that no team can draft a 2nd goalie until every team has drafted a starter.  Thoughts/reaction/feedback?

I would say don't restrict based on other team's picks, but a selected round.  (Just a random number)- say you can't pick a 2nd G until the 12th round.  If someone hasn't picked their starter by then, they've had the chance to do it.  Otherwise, someone could just hold their goalie picks until the last two, and know at worst they are getting the 24th starter.

And here I was worried goalies would be the first 24 picks........man, I wish I was wired to be so diabolical when playing games on this site.

You make a good point.  I probably need something closer to how the NHL did the all-star draft this year.  Must have goalies drafted by round x, at least 4 D by round z and so on.

I disagree kid. If an owner wants to load up on goaltending or defense, let him. Then he'll be thin on offense, and visa-versa. That is the beauty of a draft, or a snake draft in this case. When do I take a goalie? I'd like a great offensive player, but if I wait, the goalie I want may get snapped up. It's all in the planning and drafting strategy.

By my count there are 52 goalies available.  We, as a league, will need to draft a minimum 48 of them.

25 of the 52 played at least 50% of their games.

So if you play this out, the question in this particular draft becomes, when do you take your goalies?  I could see a goalie run happening in the third round.

At some point you'll have to decide whether to skip that 4th defenceman and take your 2nd goalie.  Much like any draft I've ever been in.

You say you're worried about some team getting royally screwed over in net, well to further what chuckinrlp said, if that happens to you it's your own damn fault.  Then you'll just have to take that 4th defenceman you held out for, and trade him to someone else who cornered the goalie you didn't.

You are right chuckinrlp
3/30/2011 3:46 PM
This is why it's great to have you guys in the league, giving your input.  If you aren't worried about there not being enough goalies to go around, then neither will I.

The last thing I want to do is overgovern this and lessen the fun for the owners.

There will be no positional requirements as the draft progresses.

Put me down for a 2nd team kid (unless you don't want people with 2 teams). Let's get this thing started! (I don't care which team name you give me, just make sure the teams are in seperate conferences)
