Why was it not?

There was great tension between the north and the south over a great many issues. Slavery was one issue, but it was part of a larger issue of the vast social and economic differences between the North and South.

Slavery was clearly one of the top 3 reasons for the war, but not the only reason, or even the main reason.

The Civil war would have been fought if slavery wasnt an issue.

Without slavery, the Civil War would never have been fought.

I love how racists try to justify their bigoted views with double talk. Remember who you are talking to.
Just because you hate Obama and wish him to fail (why anyone with a right mind would want the president of the United States to fail doesn't make sense) doesn't in itself make you a racist but if you do hold these thoughts most likely you are a racist.
If you downplay slavery that in itself does not make you a racist but if you do hold those ideas most likely you are a racist

Well there it is. If you are trying to stop Obama from shifting America to a socialist economy you are a Racist!

Why exatly would the civil war matter to a racist? What advantage would a racist gain by making the Civil war about economic differences between the agrarian south and the industrial north.

Might you be referring to the South's agrarian economy built on slavery?

...and in the South's eyes they couldn't survive economically without it.

The was was about slavery and the side effects from it.

Swamp asserts -

I know this isnt what we all learned in History class, but the available evidence supports the fact that the Civil war was not all about slavery.

If you read the letters of Southern soldiers no one mentions fighting for slavery. For them this is a fight between the noble South and the Bastard North.

Slavery was one of the issues that brought us to war, and the War freed the slaves, it just wasnt the reason the war started.

Think of WWII and the Holocaust. We didnt get in to save the Jewish People, but our winning the war did save millions of Jewish people.

Swamp is correct on this one. abolition was an afterthought. once your enemy makes you kill him dead you resent his hardheadedness and the sacrifices he makes you make and you kill him even deader. so his bullshit does not come back on you again i guess. maybe it's anger, maybe it's justice, but at some point what you pay has to buy you something. abe made them pay

now i get slavery was a root cause. can you imagine a compromise that counts some people as 1 person and other people as 3/5 of a person. but from the president's point of view, the south was stealing half his power and he was not gonna have it. put it this way. if the south had not seceeded, slavery would not have been abolished in that century and probably not until WWII

Actually, swamp is not right about this one. Because the very economic conflict he points has its roots in slavery. The South did not want to lose their slaves. They were very afraid that eventually they would be outnumbered by the non-slave states and that those states would outlaw slavery across the entire nation. Rather than risk that, they chose to attempt succession so they could have their own separate slave-permitting country. That was at the heart of the states's rights issue. So while most people saw other reasons for war, the critical ones revolved around the question of slavery.

Truth be known, the real causes of the civil war are below...

It was all about who controlled the predatorkin.

Try this **** on for size.  Abe Lincoln saved the fate of humanity.  The southern slave owners, all wrapped up in greed, were in the process of breeding super slaves.  The super slaves would be capable of doing the work of multiple non-super slaves.  Who knows what changes would have taken hold with the super slaves in their 2nd and 3rd generations.  They ultimately would have risen up and overcome the white man and eventually all of America.  So from me and the rest of America, thank you Abe Lincoln.

*I have no factual evidence to back this up.  *
