5 man pitching staff? Topic

depends doomsday... A strong + hitters park (think Hilltop, Coors, and any other that's 1.06 or higher on the ballpark listing) will require additional inning's pitched. you can get away with less if you're playing at Petco, Astrodome, Dodger, and such. Then you have to consider the composition of your staff (e.g. low bb/9 guys?). In general, start by figuring you need 1450 total innings pitched to get through a season without significant fatigue. Then remember the SIM gives you a 10% bonus over the player's RL IP. That gets you back around 1300 or so in drafted innings. From there, figure on using more or less depending on staff structure and the ball park you'll be playing 81 games in.

You've won a lot more than I have, but I'm not convinced that looking at the park rating is all that informative...  That might make an easy proxy for a quick and dirty ERA correction.  But for figuring out innings, I would think the singles rating would be more useful.  Giving up a larger proportion of XBH will cause you to give up more runs, but it won't really take away outs, so aside from losing a handful of potential DPs over the course of a season, I don't think it hurts your IP requirements all that much...

The "park factor" rating is a general guide with reference to a vague expected run multiplier. It is not used at all in SIM calculations. Only the actual +/- values matter.

Agreed, it is the singles (or really hits factor that matters) much more.

zub and dahs, you are both most correct. I was simply trying to point out in as few words as possible the effect of having more "hits" of any type drives up the number of batters a staff faces, and therefore the pitch count.

Agreed with the above posts. Just so you see where we get these numbers, doomsday....

9 IP/G * 162 G/season = 1458 IP/season (note that this is a rough estimate since some games will only require 8 innings and some will require more than 9)

1458 / 1.10 (the 10% bump) = 1325.45, rounding up in this case to 1326 necessary IP

1326, while being rough, is a good estimate to start with in an OL. Oftentimes, you'll see owners being able to win with < 1300, but until you are comfortable, 1325-ish is a good benchmark. Also, make use of your AAA pitchers to be extra comfy. It's rare that you see a team with under 1250 IP doing well these days, but even down to 1200 is possible if you know what you're doing and feel like micromanaging.

I never draft much more than 1200 quality IP (i.e. Excluding $200K scrubs). I generally target 1170 quality IP.
