Joss/Carruthers hater Topic

It's official...I'm as sick of Addie Joss as I was of Bob Carruthers.  I'm in a theme where 3 teams are running away with the league and every one of them has Joss/Maddux/Martinez as their rotation.  It just gets old seeing the same guys all the time.  I'm probably leaving the site.  I'm not bitter, it just really gets tiring seeing the same guys win all the time.  Once in a blue moon I'll get a hitter to over perform, and then I'll look at one of the HOF'ers team and his whole team is hitting 30 points better than his performance history average.  Not sure why...other than I suck at this - but it's just getting to be a waste of money and time.

I'm risking my HOF status to say this, but it's HOFer Cheat Codes.  Enter *avg* when drafting to get overperformance in batting average (or *obp* for on-base perentage, etc.).

I am with you buddy. I am sick and tired of everybody using the same Deadball pitchers over and over again. In the just completed season of the Champs league (they are starting the WS right now). Of the teams that made the playoffs, there were 18 Deadball pitchers (all before 1906) and 3 Modern day pitchers (after 1980). One of the teams in the WS is called "Triple Joss".

I am leaning on not playing in anymore Champs Leagues because of that.

I did start a Theme League entitled "Deadball Pitchers are Dead" that no one can have any deadball pitchers, but like most Themes - it is taking forever to fill.

Here is a suggestion to Site Staff - at the next update, increase deadball pitchers salaries significantly.

A big reason to play theme leagues. I don't think I've played more than 2 or 3 open leagues in all my time here.

"Fixing" a player's cost, be it Joss, Carruthers, or all deadball pitchers in general, does nothing.  Making them more expensive will simply make other players more desirable, relative to the field of all players.  If you raise the cost of deadball pitchers, then Maddux and Pedro become even more attractive.  If you raise them as well, then the WIS players will simply move on and find the next value.  Maybe it will swing to being some wacky strategy we haven't seen yet, but it will still become ubiquitous until the NEXT price adjustments.

Complaining that certain players are overused is pretty silly, I think.  Of COURSE people use the players that will give them the best chance of winning, mostly because those players are the best value for dollars spent right now.  But someone will always be a "best value."  Maybe the powers that be should be changing up who that is every once in a while -- like neutering Carruthers -- but if you think that you won't still see the same players over and over again you're deluding yourself.

As msheaf said, good reason to play theme leagues.  A lot more variety.

Theme leagues do take a lot of time to fill, Joss, and the rest of the deadballers are obnoxious. Pre and Post 1930 or 1940 $80 MiL OL's would be fun, fill quickly and give us some variety. I don't think the Post 1930/40 teams would fare well in the TOC, but there doesn't seem to be much alternative. The main problem is trying to be competitive in an OL without deadball guys. Occasionally I throw in a team with modern pitchers and I've made the playoffs, but it seems sooner or later the HR/9 catch up with you.

I'd much rather try something new than go with the same strategy as everybody else and dominate.  If somebody told me right now I could have a team with Joss, etc and go 110-50 what fun is that?  Right now in open leagues I have a struggling 2010 Test Team of all 2010 players, and a team called My Generation with players from 1975-Present.  It makes it a little more interesting for me.  Just frustrating when I run into Joss's EVERY day and get shut out.  I guess I lied a bit because at least Joss doesn't get three hits every game so I guess I despised Carruthers more.  I'm not joking the three teams I mentioned in the first post all have Joss/Maddux and Martinez (one has 99 instead of 00) - and they are a combined 244-112.  So why bother unless I'm going to do the same thing???  It is a theme by the way, but I guess I just have to choose themes where it is impossible for everyone to choose 08 Joss.  Or stop my whining...he's in the pool of players so people can pick him if they want - just gets old seeing him in every rotation.

Pitching is overrated. If you aren't winning, it's because you don't know how to put an offense together.

I just don't get it when people only play in 80M open leagues, then complain about having to face the same cookies all the time.  PLAY IN A THEME LEAGUE!  I've played in hundreds of leagues and all but three have been theme leagues.  Open leagues are for newbies or for veterans who like to try new strategies.  Unfortunately, they are also for people who only care about racking up credits by using the same team over and over and beating up on the newbies.

I think what you're saying applies to individual players.  The problem cited here is that an entire class of players - deadball pitchers - contains far better values relative to other options than it should.

Boogerlips has a point.  You can take a staff from whenever you want and win, provided you outscore your opponents.  You can also edit that down to: You can ... win, provided you outscore your opponents.  However, some guys want to win by scoring a fair amount and having great pitching.  It's a lot harder to do that with post-deadball pitchers.  Question is - is this a feature or a bug?

If everyone uses the same pitchers why doesn't everybody win?  Maybe you are sick of HoF players that understand the game as a whole.  Understand how defense and ballpark factors have an effect on a team?  Sorting out your rotation is simply one aspect of the game.  Why use the same pitchers?  Because they have mastered that variable.  You can look at the team that they use, copy the team, copy the stadium and see how you do.  Perhaps settings have a bigger impact than anyone wants to admit.  Or maybe the same guys continue to be "lucky"

I think that violates the rules of Math.  He is priced based on his numbers.  Don't join Open Leagues.

I hear ya, bro.  But don't let this be the reason to chase you away.  It's the nature of the beast.  Like they say in the NFL, it's a copycat league.  Moving on from the cliches...

Like others suggested, try theme leagues (although you will need patience for many of them to fill).  Perhaps a progressive league would be down your alley (certainly not the same old, same old in these).  Or through trial and error, come up with an original team to knock off those unoriginal teams with the same players.  If you don't want to spend the $$$ for trial and error purposes, use the SimMatchup to test out teams.  There is nothing more gratifying than beating the cookie cutters with your own, original creation.  It can be done, with many users on here as evidence.
