is there ever a good time to cut players? Topic

Crimsonblue, admin has repeatedly assured users that no such "human factor" as you have described has been programmed into the sim.  For years.  If you think they're lying through their teeth to you, I strongly suggest you stop spending your money on their games.  Also, if you think the standard deviations are too large based on the sample sizes of standard sim seasons you need to refresh your statistics.

Mixtroy, I agree with your point about a slumping player continuing to slump, and you have a valid point Uncleal on the disparity in owner skill level causing streaks.  There is a lot right about both sides of the discussion.  YES a slumping player is a drafting error, but YES as an astute owner I feel you should try to correct it.  The factors that are causing this player to slump(venue home and away, excessive righthanded pitching ect). is not always evident to an owner until a season is underway. I don't expect to see many lefthanded starters in an OL but one season I saw 27 righties in a row to start a season that killed a platoon situation for me. Not bad drafting, but a calculated discision gone bad. Terminally waiting for these players to rise to the level of their "baseball card" is refusing to acknowledge these factors. I once waived a slumping Miguel  Dilone from one team, picked up the SAME Dilone some time later for a team in another league and amazingly he started hitting above his average (same home park). I don't know what to make of it but something happened and it happend because of the waiving. I'm going to try this again, and if the player "wakes up" on cue again.  I will definitely be on the side of the "bad version" theory.

Dahsdedater, your comments are way too assumptive for me to address but I will say this, just because a system is discussed, doesn't mean that I think it's bad, I enjoy it, so I don't have any idea where your money spending comment comes from.

Contrarian, although your analysis on matters in this game are pretty much always on point, and I definitely respect your knowledge.  However, if you will note, I was referring to "underperforming" players, i.e., players who are hitting or pitching "poorly" in relation to their normalized numbers and their histories. And looking at the players you listed, without knowing which versions of the players you had, the dollar cap, or the type of pitching they faced, the only player from that list that jumps out at you as PERHAPS underperforming is maybe Lary.  But as I clearly noted in my post, they don't ALWAYS continue to underperform.  I merely pointed out that from my experience, they'll do so more often than not.  If you disagree, I understand and still acknowledge that you're much more knowledgeable than me with this game.  But, respectfully speaking, if you recall, we were recently in a league together and you were in my division with what appeared to clearly be a playoff team in my opinion.  However, you finished about 14 games behind me because you had a few hitters who weren't living up to their billing. And instead of cutting your losses and dumping them to try catch me before it got too late, you held onto them, perhaps believing they would suddenly turn into Superman when they weren't doing it all season. As I said, there's no disrespect intended.  I was just pointing out a prime example that sometimes you have to dump players in order to compete.

My comment, if you read thoroughly, is that I wouldn't throw my entertainment dollar at people I strongly felt were repeatedly and blatantly lying to me.  Admin has been asserting repeatedly for years that there are no streaks built into the engine, that players are not adjusted, and that every plate appearance is essentially calculated in a vacuum.  That's not to say that the fatigue of the pitcher, etc., aren't taken into account.  But no consideration whatsoever is given to what the batter or pitcher has done previously in the game or the season.  And players are NEVER adjusted to be better or worse than they should be.  If you disagree with any of that - which you are free to do - you are frankly accusing the people who run this website of lying through their teeth to the paying customers about the product they are paying for.  If I felt that people were doing that to me I'd find a different way to spend my entertainment budget.

Dahsdebater, please tell you're not naive enough to believe that businesses don't lie 'through their teeth to the paying customers about the product they are paying for."  We don't know if what WIS admin tells us is actually true or not.  We only know what they TELL us.  As a point in fact, how many times has someone sent in a ticket on an issue and receive a certain response to that.  And then, another person, sends a ticket on the same thing, but yet gets a different response?  I think they tell us whatever they feel like at the time or whatever we want to hear.

While I appreciate your compliments Thunder, it should be noted that I never said WIS lies to us or that they knowingly and deliberate skew players' performance or fix games.  I was only saying that we really don't know if there's actual tangible validity to everything they tell us. For instance, they tell us that Sparky's number one overriding factor is to win the game.  But how many times has he made bonehead moves that leave you scratching your head...moves that neither you, me or any other manager would make, like allowing your pitcher to hit with men in scoring position in the bottom of the 8th with you down 1 run and pinch hitters on the bench and pitchers in the pen? Some of the things they tell us simply doesn't make sense.

Sparky's objective is to win the game.  Unfortunately he can't actually think, so they have to program him to make decisions based on some set of parameters that may not be as flexible as some owners would prefer.
6/6/2011 2:18 AM
They'd be better off programming him with Charlie Manuel thinkng. lol
6/6/2011 9:24 AM
Newest conspiracy theory: WIS "boosts" and "poisons" Sparky too!  Ever notice that when Sparky manages your team like an idiot for half a season, he'll usually continue to manage like an idiot for the rest of the season?!?!

This is all senseless.

You program a game which uses random number generators to decide outcomes.  Random number sequences include streaks.

Why on earth would you then program streaks in?  It's already there.  Anything you toss on top of that is just more code that can screw things up.

Please understand: Even if you wanted to make sure there are streaks, you don't have to do anything.  They're already there.  It's just extra pointless work.
