Higher $M Caps - Hitting vs pitching spending Topic

Once again, I could use some help of the knowledgeable WiS users out there.  As I mentioned before, I don't play higher level caps.  I did have a question about how people tend to use their salary on hitting/pitching.  I know when I build a $80 team, the salaries are split pretty close to 50/50 on hitting and pitching, with maybe a $1 more on pitching sometimes.  Does this hold true as the caps go up?  Or do people tend to spend more money on hitting?  When trying to come up with some teams for $100M and $120M caps, I find my myself spending more on hitting.  This means I usually end up with a 55/45 split on hitting and pitching.  Does this happen to other users, or am I just building a recipe for failure.  Thanks again everyone.

I spend more on hitting at higher caps.  Typically at $100 million I'll have something like $60/$40 or $55/$45 and at $120 million it will typically be close to $70/$50.  If I get up to $160 million I'm usually looking at $95/$65.  The marginal value of loads of uber-expensive pitching vs. fairly solid pitching seems to go down at the high end, while Ruth, Williams, and Mantle will hit circles around a $28 million outfield.

The higher the cap goes the more I'd spend on hitting as well. Increase your raw team pitching salary just enough to allow you to draft a few more innings to account for the stronger offenses, and a marginal quality upgrade (if necessary), and the dump the difference on hitting. I usually spend +/- $40m at  $70m, $80m, & $90m on pitching, by the time I've reached $120m my pitching budget is usually only increased to +/- $50m and at $160m it's around +/-$60m.

I'm not so sure I'd say hitting, because I'm currently in two high cap leagues ($120 mil and $160mil) which happen to be my first two ever, and I used the same approach that I use in OLs, i.e., good pitching. Sure, I have some of the great alltime hitters on my teams, but I spent a lot on super pitching.  And its hard to argue with the results of having the best record in both leagues.  So, me personally, I'd go with pitching everytime over hitting.

You haven't been through the playoffs yet.  I have no problem arguing with regular season results.  Spending money on all pitchers who can win a ton of games is a waste.  You want a few guys to use in the playoffs and then some guys who can play around .500 during the regular season and spend the rest of your money upgrading your lineup.

The correct answer is 5.

Well, its kind of hard to upgrade a lineup that consists of:

14 King Kelly
17 Cobb
87 Tip
48 Musial
11 Cobb
46 Musial
02 Lajoie
90 Denny Lyons
00 Rey Sanchez

And as for the playoffs, I have money in the bank with Ferdie and Elton.

My last three $120m lineups:

'86 Brouthers
'22 Hornsby
'24 Ruth
'35 Foxx
'10 Cobb
'08 Wagner
'94 S. Thompson
'61 Stuart
'95 Boggs
(DH league)

'86 Brouthers
'22 Hornsby
'24 Ruth
'35 Foxx
'10 Cobb
'89 HoJo
'94 S. Thompson
'81 Schmidt

'86 Brouthers
'22 Hornsby
'41 Williams
'24 Ruth
'35 Foxx
'10 Cobb
'89 HoJo
'95 Boggs

And I usually run a three man rotation with '15 Alexander, '12 Johnson and a starter 3A/3B... it's hard to beat those two when I have that lineup, so they win most of the time, I win a handful of my starter 3 games, and then I go to a 2-man rotation in the playoffs.

Not doing a whole lot of experimenting there, eh j4m?

Haha! To be fair, I ran them all simultaneously as a test for how little pitching I could get by with at a $120 cap. I haven't tried yet, but I think I could take a team with a sub $40m pitching staff to the playoffs at that level.

Though, I drafted a vastly different team that spent $60/$60 for the WISC league, but I think my brother will end up using as the core for his team, so I'll get to have some fun with that one as I'll likely go for a more offense oriented team, like above.

Until you lose in the 1st round w/ the best record.  It happens all the time.

Yes, in a  higher cap league,  you pay more for hitting.  But don't forget the most important thing, QUALITY over quantity.

At the highest cap, $255m, the very best quality pitching does not cost more than about $110m total, so the answer to the question is automatic at that level.

Have to agree with this. You can take the best pitchers in the game, get 2000 innings, and it will be around 100M. At the 160M cap, I usually go something like 95/65 hitting/pitching, and the pitching staff is excellent.
